With the Occupy Oakland events earlier this week, we can see a major shift in the support of the world’s fight to change government, freedom, and the quality of human life. We commend those who have stepped up in the face of oppression and resisted anything less than what is one’s constitutional and human right. We also believe it is important for people to enjoy simple pleasures and celebrate. In the spirit of Halloween, we hope that this SF Weekend Preview, Halloween Edition brings some happiness and people together for a weekend of simple fun.

To see such precise visualizations of each sound is ground breaking satisfaction for
music as experimental as Amon’s.

By Beatrice Lazar

The ISAM tour of Amon Tobin is a visual display of introverted guts. ISAM is the name of Amon’s latest album released on the famed British indie label, Ninja Tunes. The label is in its 20th year (that’s a HUGE feat for an indie label) and has a niche spotlight on all things abstract – eclectic – electronic. When Brazilian born DJ Amon Tobin steps out of his massive white building block structure that towers his entire concert stage, his body language is humble and he hardly strikes you as the wizard who has invoked the creation of the worlds one succumbs to in his show. Photographers in the pit seize the moment to capture the DJ who will only been seen in full view twice during his performance. Unless you count the part where he interacts with us from within the structure, real time,
via a Microsoft connect camera. At that point his body blows up over the height of the structure in the form of one of those 3-Dimensional pin sculpture toys. The effects are enormous and eerily astute.

Since the early 90’s Amon has been known as an electronic sampling DJ and producer in underground rave scenes. In addition to the extravagant light show tour, he also collaborated an exhibit with London based visual artist Tessa Farmer “ISAM: Control Over Nature”. Tessa created miniature worlds with organic elements colliding with the futuristic; like tiny zapping flying skeleton fairies inhabiting a carcass of a cats body – Amon’s track “Kitty Cat”. The show was in London’s Crypt Gallery and reached people
who may not have otherwise been exposed to Amon’s music. With the Internet being a major experience source, it is easy to become a mere tourist of an artists music. I like this idea of new ways to more deeply engage with music using more than just the medium of
music itself.

For the live music tour, Amon performs from within a 5,000 lb apparatus made of secret trade ingredients that in the show has the appearance of being very lightweight. The relationship of this structure within its space is enthralling. It is a simple set of white
building bocks. Some blocks are piled up high upon each other and others protrude out into the abyss of space, insinuating endless creativity. Apparently it’s no easy technical feat to project images onto this dynamic material. Each track has such a range of dynamic imagery. There is the sense of endless ideas, creativity continuously building upon itself, breaking down, fizzling up, some resurfacing, some zipping in and zapping out never to be seen again. The visual clarity created with shading, glassy effects on transparent dancing cubes, billowing snowy smoke poufs, futuristic spaceship adventures and acute thin lines twittering into giant green and blue bouncy oscillating sound waves of heavenly glowing light – is all beyond mesmerizing. The lights don’t seem contained to their canvas. You feel spiraled in to a twizzling black hole where expansion is endless. I found myself having to take a step back to remind myself I was a spectator. The consensus of the audience was “ mind
blowing”, “never seen anything like that”, “can’t begin to imagine the technology that went into that!”

Every aspect of the music is expressed. It’s really so fucking satisfying. When I dance to experimental music I find myself making decisions about what aspects to grab on to. Some sounds get away before you can engage with them, others are too abstract to interpret or it’s physically impossible to respond to more than one at the same time. Therefore, to see such precise visualizations of each sound is ground breaking satisfaction for music as experimental as Amon’s.

There are unsettling feelings about this show. Audiences express resistance to the idea of a DJ show being so video centric. I think it’s admirable Amon takes on a whole new media extension to explain his music. Perhaps there is fear that the light show creates
something so unrealistic and so realistic at the same time, creating a whole new reality, which is so enticing that we will forget ourselves. I think this fear is a good sign about how this art reaches our humanity.

There is one larger cube that protrudes from the centre of the structure. Its material allows transparency at points in the show. Amon Tobin is in inside this cube and it is a comforting reminder that there is a human responsible for these theatrics.

The show ended with tinkering lullaby sounds and images of fluttering playful cubes falling up themselves and eventually fading away. You feel uplifted and safely returned from a very trippy dream. The work that went into this show was a true collaboration with
Vello and VSL Labs and Amon, himself. It wasn’t a case of just handing off music to a tech team. I was told Amon had loads of reference points from movies, visual art pieces and so on and that hours and hours of collaborative discussion went into this.

In true concert celebratory fashion a shower of white confetti brings the audience together near the end of the performance. The confetti pieces are not so tiny as standard confetti- being larger they seem to celebrate us, they are like small token pieces of the white building blocks – and I felt like we are them – the experience felt confirming of the utterly immersive experience … so immersive I felt a longing for flowers – a need for something that would bring me back to earth – a reminder so profound from a lost world. I did feel that this show gavea warning: “ What we create is much bigger than ourselves.” Like I said – display of introverted guts.

By Beatrice Lazar

Dehli 2 Dublin – Canadian band gives head to your Lager beer. You will spill before the end of the 1st set tune. Dreamy, hot- hot Ravi Binning sings straight from his heart to your heart. His Indian eyebrows go wild for you and his voice is piercing like a teenage heart throb call. Don’t get too close to the stage or these guys will burn your pants down! They have maple syrup hearts pouring over us with, “This is an S.O.S. – we must stop the stress from East to West. One Heart, One Mind. Ohm Shanti Ohm”. That may sound cheesy here but, they bring international genres together in the most harmonious uplifting ways and often singing in Punjabi.

Multiculturalism is no dream at a Dehli 2 Dublin show! Their collision of musical scales from East to West convinces us we are all one and the same. From Canadian heritage Celtic folk to Bhangra , a little reggae to classical stringed solos all wrapped with a western ribbon of electronica/ Dub- they simply evaporate borders. DJ Tarun spins the tables and beats heavy on the intoxicating tabla drums. Andrew Kim is an Asian kilt wearing Irish jig dancing electric sitar player. The Klezmer, blues infused artist Jaron Freeman Fox does guest appearances, burning up his violin, turning it into a heavy metal fiddle, trashing on it while holding it above his head. He is Caucasian but, is relentless in Indian raga battling –which sounds like freestyle rapping on spiritual speed. He and Ravi go at it, a quarter way in to their show.

With the mix of Indians in the audience, the Bhangra dancing, the high energy dramatics on stage, this felt like a Bollywood movie set where no one was left out.

See the new electrifying “Apples” Music video and check out the JUST RELEASED Delhi 2 Dublin EP: Delhi 2 Dubland. For a limited time, you can purchase this collaboration and remix album, all on the reggae and dubwise tip, on Bandcamp for just $5 bucks!

Formed in 1972, Black Uhuru is considered a leader in the wave of second generation reggae bands. They were the first reggae group to win a grammy (1985) and have broken trends playing alongside bands like The Clash, The Police and Rolling Stones. This is a huge feat when you consider that so many international genre’s simply stay confined to the “world music” section. Not to mention the decades of oppression it’s surpassed. Last week in San Francisco the Jamaican band headlined with current members Five Star General, Lion Lieutenant, Andrew Bees and original founding member Duckie Gong. There was also a woman who occasionally sang lead, dressed in a beautiful flowing gown of rasta colours.

They performed legendary songs like “What Is Life”, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” and “I love King Salassie”. Haile Salassie was Ethiopia’s Emperor in the early 1900′s and has remained a symbol of freedom and peace for the Rastafarian movement. His image has been a backdrop for many concerts throughout reggae history.

Given that reggae has mostly been synonymous with the political movement of Rasta- I’m always amazed at the cool easy going mellowness of the genre. The hypnotic drum and bass sounds, peaked with twittering dub keyboards and layered harmonious sing song melodies. The relentless messages for equality often sound like lullabies.

There is a spiritual aspect that goes along with rasta. You can see it in the dancing and hear it in the lyrics. Andrew Bees flailed his dreads, spinning around in trance as his musical comrades marched cooly on the spot, one dressed in a white uniform style jacket and dark shades. They looked strong and wise- like they carried stories the audience was very far removed from. I was in a crowd of mostly white urban hippies. Yet everyone was fully engaged with the rasta messages from this group called “Black Freedom”. “Uhuru ” is a Swahili word for “freedom”. This all seemed surreal in some sense but the music speaks for itself and the ideas of world unification and spiritualism can relate to anyone and I think that is largely why this music conquered on an international level. Some of the lyrics were related in the Jamaican sounding dialect and I was surprised to see a couple of white kids jumping up and down and reciting. I only wished I could join in.

I went to this show alone – alot of my friends have the impression that reggae is pigeon holed to a very specific crowd and sound. I think they might be right as reggae has been exploited by the consumerist sound as happens with any genre. But Black Uhuru brings us back to some of that originality that you simply can’t resist.

As we move through the second half of September, it’s not just the weather that’s heating up in San Francisco. Folsom Street Fair will be upon us faster than you can say, “Slap my hiney, honey!!” With Public Works now firmly established as the go-to venue for San Francisco’s alt-underground scene, not just one, but three– count ‘em– THREE popular club parties will converge in the Mission to close down Folsom Street Fair with one wickedly deviant after party. On Sunday, September 25, Hard French’s hard partying crew, Some Thing’s some kind of drag, and Honey Soundsystem’s honeypot of DJs will be in the house to keep the candle wax burning far into the early morning hours long after the Folsom Street Fair concludes on Sunday afternoon.

On hand for the festivities:

Live Performances by Miracles Club (Portland), Hard Ton (Milan, Italy), DJ Bunny and DavO (Blood, Sweat, and Queers, SF)

Featured DJs: Honey Soundsystem (SF), Hard French DJ’s (SF), Dabecy (Electronic Music Bears, Dial Up), Doc Sleep (Honey Soundsystem, Dial Up), Kim Anh (Booby Trap, LA, Saint Le Roq), DJ Beyonda (Hole in Your Soul, Portland).

Featured Personalities: Courtney Trouble (Nofauxxx.com), Princess Donna (Kink.com).

Are you deviants still with me? Good! Because TNG has two tickets to give away! In the comments section below this post, describe to me your favorite fetish item– be it thigh high leather boots, chaps or maybe just a pair of jeans with strategically placed rips and holes. But do me a favor and keep it clean lest my faint-hearted editors ban me from this website! The first two responses will each win a ticket to Deviants. Please make sure you leave me your full name and an email address. If you don’t, I can’t get you in the door.

And if you miss this chance, well– you can still come join us anyway!

The inaugural production of Forum Theatre’s eighth season is Caryl Churchill’s Mad Forest, which debuts this weekend.

On the eve of the Romanian Revolution, and under the eternal watch of the secret police, two families (one poor and one wealthy) struggle to retain their friendship — and to survive the winter. But once the violence has ceased and the euphoria has lifted, will anything have changed? A blend of journalism, fantasy, and harsh realism, Mad Forest delves into the madness and fervor of a society on the brink of upheaval.

The show features company members Rose McConnell and Alexander Strain, and Charlotte Akin, Joe Brack, Matthew Dougherty, Mark Halpern, Ashley Ivey, Jim Jorgensen, Dana Levanovsky, Stephanie Roswell, and David Winkler.

Performances are Thursday-Saturday at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 2:00 PM. Additional shows Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 2:00 PM, Monday, October 10, 2011 at 7:30 PM, and Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 2:00 PM. Open Forum discussions will follow the performances on October 6, October 8, October 13 and October 15. There will be two Pay-What-You-Can Previews on Thursday, September 22 and Friday, September 23.

Tickets are $25 for all performances ($20 for seniors, groups, and Round House subscribers; $15 for students and patrons under 30). To purchase, visit www.forum-theatre.org or call the Round House box office at 240-644-1100.

I know where the summer goes, and it's away, sadly, as it's demonstrating now. Going, but not gone yet, though, as the boys at Spank are preparing to celebrate this weekend with TWO boat parties. For everyone's sake, I'll eschew the obvious SNL reference and assume that it goes with out saying how awesome a boat party can be (but if it doesn't, I just said it, so there). To quote the Spank hosts themselves, "Nothing makes New York glow like a view from the harbor on this clipper ship." Friday night is the Viking boat party, and Saturday night is the Yacht boat party. Each boasts a solid roster of DJs, hosts, and special guests, who I'm sure will uphold Spank's unfailingly consistent record for recruiting excellent party people. The two-and-a-half hour cruise, on either night, will run you only $25, which is a great way to splurge some end-of-summer dough before you hunker down to work and store up for winter. So, by all means, head out to the harbor this weekend and rage, rage against the dying of the light. But gets your tickets soon, because the boat's limited to only so much space (a metaphor, perhaps?).
