Yesterday was Day 3 of Noise Pop, and I think I’ve reached my threshold for crusty indie hipsters. I didn’t realize I was at my upper limits until I growled at a young photographer lady for kneeling on my jacket while trying to snap a pic of one of the bands. “Get off my jacket,” I told her rather tersely. Shocked, she immediately apologized explaining that she mistook it for the stage curtain but then said my response was rather “curt.” She then introduced herself (“Alice”) and tried to make small talk. I was just like, “Get off my fucking jacket, bitch.”

Let me just start off by apologizing because I’m an old man, and I can’t stay out late on a weeknight. Yeah, yeah, lame… So for last night, I decided to make my way back to Benders Bar for their happy hour because it’s free, I can get home before 9 PM, and still claim I did Noise Pop for the day. Actually, tonight wasn’t such a bad deal because Love Is Chemicals headlined, and for 90’s indie rock nostalgics like me who are still living in the halcyon days of Superchunk and Sub Pop 7″ singles, this was quite a treat.

Okay, y’all, Noise Pop kicked off last night, and I’m gonna be yer San Francisco New Gay correspondent on ground zero. Opening last night was at Benders Bar on 19th Street and South Van Ness. I have to admit that in my extensive barhopping in the Mission, I’ve missed this hipster dive. Last night, it was raining. Care of El Niño, it’s been pouring sheets for the last month, and there I was drenched to the nines outside the door waiting to get in. I wouldn’t have been so eager to get in normally, but I was lured by the promise of a Diesel t-shirt (they are sponsoring Noise Pop this year) and free drinks.

The 18th edition of San Francisco’s Noise Pop festival kicks off on Tuesday. Throughout the week-long festival, look for keynote bands like Yoko Ono (Tuesday, February 23), The Dodos (Thursday, February 25), and the Magnetic Fields (Saturday, February 27, and Monday, March 1). The festival also showcases indie-themed art and film such as a rock photography exhibition at Hotel Biron and screenings of Blood Into Wine, a documentary that follows Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer front man Maynard James Keenan and his mentor Eric Glomski into the world of winemaking in the hostile deserts of Arizona.

I’ve been watching the Olympics all week long. ‘ Cause frankly, they’re ain’t nothin’ gayer than men’s figure skating. Don’t believe me? Check out Aunt Joyce’s recap of the men’s short program. In between watching spandex-on-ice and Lindsey Jacobellis choking at yet another Olympic snowboard cross race, take some time out this weekend to get even more scatterbrained at these fine music-filled events.
