The Montreal electro-chill act feels a bit like fetal prog, in that it captures not the rambling essence of a Yes- like universe, but the first lazy burst of two atoms colliding. (Or something, I’m no Carl Sagan.) It’s like last year’s Hot Chip/The XX tour produced a progeny that could combine the latter’s late-night slink with the former’s dance floor buzz. The video embedded below this interview is the best example, but the rest of their third album, Shapeshifting, comes recommended as well.

Tour dates are down at the bottom if you wanna check ‘em out live. Otherwise, here’s your interview with YG member Stephen Ramsay.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Stephen Ramsay:Hey, being straight is a choice – it’s not the way you’re born, which is what most straight people would like you to believe… haha.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

SR: That we don’t give ourselves pedicures. The good ones do.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

SR: On behalf of the straight population, I would personally like to apologize for the way our dress sense – which is dubious at best… [Ed. Note: Many people answer this way. You're not that bad, I'm sure...]

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

SR: Learning how to wax like everyone else.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

SR: Ellen DeGeneres. [Ed. Note: She's a popular target in these columns too...]

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

SR: I don’t know. All I can say is that when we work on a song, it’s worked on with everything we can summon. We need everything. We try everything. We try to ignore it, repress it, try to get high, try to get intoxicated, try to get sober. All the versions of ourselves that we can summon are summoned to participate in this project.

We will try everything, do anything. By any means possible.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

SR: Because we are like silver flames shooting from the speakers, gently cupping your nether regions…

Thank you, The Postelles. While your full-length debut isn’t out yet, your EP White Nights and it’s title track (embedded below the interview) make me remember that four guys can take the stage with guitars and skinny jeans and still have fun. More in the mode of Miniature Tigers than The Strokes (because lets face it, no one can out-Strokes The Strokes), these guys are playing plain ol’ rock and roll and playing it well. Frontman Daniel Balk was nice enough to answer some of our questions about being straight (and not do it too seriously,) so check ‘em out.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Daniel Balk: Last night when I was in bed with our bassist John Speyer. He rolled over in his sleep and I didn’t enjoy it. I mean, he has great legs, but it just didn’t do it for me.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

DB: That we can’t wear women’s clothing. We can and we do! Half my wardrobe is my girlfriends.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

DB: We feel the need to wear the skinniest jeans possible, no matter how much it hurts.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

DB: We live in Manhattan, had a rehearsal studio in Chelsea, so we feel like the minority. We don’t get let into bars or restaurants sometimes, it’s very difficult. But everyday people are becoming more accepting and it’s getting easier for us. [Ed. Note: Chelsea is hard for us too.]

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

DB: John Speyer

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

DB: We don’t use computers or backing tracks. We play all our own instruments and our band name doesn’t have an animal in it. But most importantly, we are proud to say we play rock n’ roll.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

DB: If you like to dance, watch four boys in skinny jeans play rock n’ roll, have a few drinks and hear some catchy tunes, you should come see The Postelles play. Also there is a kissing booth at every show!

My old roommate, his girlfriend and myself once spent a hungover April afternoon watching Pretty in Pink on VH1. Since our pain made us giggly we started to realize how the lyrics of the movie’s irrepressible title track, OMD‘s “If You Leave,” could sound quite creepy with a tweaked intonation. For months after that I got a kick out of appearing from behind doors and furniture, deadpanning “I touch you once, Aaron. I touch you twice. I watch you shower.”

That’s the thing about naked emotion: It makes people uncomfortable. Naked emotion is the rebelled-against mother of irony and detachment. Thank god, then, that the age of so-called hipster irony is over. The recent output of bands like Gayngs and Destroyer suggest that we, as a society, are once again ready to embrace sincerity and saxophones without the advent of air quotes.

OMD, (nee’ Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) might very well be responsible for this sea change. The band had a successful European tour last year, and now are readying to hit the states in support of their new album History of Modern. Anyone who enjoys music from the past 7 years owes them a big debt of gratitude, so coming to these shows would be a great way to repay it.

Speaking of gratitude, thank you to OMD frontman Andrew McCLuskey for answering these questions and making them interesting. You can check out the “If You Leave” video and the band’s tour dates below. Enjoy!

***

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Andy McCLuskey: When I found out that no amount of Grey Goose improves the taste of cum!

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

AM: That all straight people can’t dance. Some can. It’s only me that does the
epileptic windmill.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

AM: To keep dancing in a way that makes them be happy that they are not straight.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s
culture?

AM: Not compromising your straightness when faced by the overwhelmingly Gay and Liberal mainstream media. Especially Fox News.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

AM: Angelica Houston.. cos she’s actually a guy… right?

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how
do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

AM: Because, despite being middle aged men, we are surprisingly not making shit
records. Nor hoping that people sing along with us live because we can’t play or sing the old songs any more.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

AM: Because we are doing this tour for you.. not ourselves.. We are losing money
bringing some “retro electro sunshine” to the North American gay community.
So get to the fucking gigs and support us or we will never come to your town
again! Assholes! [Ed. Note: If you're show involves assholes, we'll be there.]

Ska/punk perennials Less Than Jake are still around, and they are still gonna make you skank your ass off at a club near you. They are launching a big national tour to promote the rerelease of their albums albums Losing Streak and Hello Rockview. To celebrate this momentous event the groups saxophonist Peter "JR" Wasilewski was nice enough to answer some of our questions about being straight. I'm particularly fond of the last answer, for reasons you will see.

Ska/punk perennials Less Than Jake are still around and they are still gonna make you skank your ass off at a club near you. They are launching a big national tour to promote the re-release of their album Losing Streak and Hello Rockview. To celebrate this momentous event the groups saxophonist Peter “JR” Wasilewski was nice enough to answer some of our questions about being straight. I’m particularly fond of the last answer, for reasons you will see.

There’s also a LTJ video and tour roundup below the interview. Check it out!

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Peter “JR” Wasilewski: 2012.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

JR: Whenever a straight person calls someone a “fag” most times it is believed we are calling the recipient of this remark a homosexual.

This is the farthest thing from the truth. If I call someone a “fag,” I’m calling them a bundle of sticks. Unless we are in England. Then I’m calling them a cigarette. [Ed. Note: TNG readers, you agree with this?]

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel you have to the gay community?

JR: I feel I’m obliged to apologize for every homophobic person that exists. I also feel I’m obliged to let said homophobic young men and women know that they shouldn’t be scared of gay people, mostly because the gay people probably aren’t attracted to them. This usually is shocking to the severely homophobic person because in their narrow mind, every gay person wants every person of their same sex and hence is the equivalent of a molester. Sorry for all these fucking idiots, gay community.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

JR: Finding someone of the opposite sex that is as fun to hang out with as a member of the same sex.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

JR: I’m 66 percent gay and a total freak so I’d probably want Jeffree Starr, All Time Low, and Vern Troyer to run a train on me.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

JR: By not trying to be a part of the crowd. The crowd sucks.

TNG:Finally, why should people come out to see your show?

JR: Because if they come out to our show and “come out” at our show, we will let them make out with our singer, Chris. Just kidding. [Ed. Note: Wish you weren't.]

Seriously, we try to have a good time and if you’re at a Less Than Jake show no one cares what you do other than dance and have fun. The only thing you might have to do is get up on stage and make a jackass of yourself, for jack asses see no race, sex or creed. They just see other jackasses… jackasses just like us!

I thought I had found something really special, but a friend of mine knew a secret: After midnight (I believe) the station would take a break in its regular format to play hard industrial music. It was here that I discovered Industrial pioneers Nitzer Ebb and their oddly infectious anarchy anthem “Join in the Chant.” It gives me much pleasure, then, 15 years later, to announce that the boys are back.

Their new album Industrial Complex is currently available for your listening pleasure, and if you needed any more convincing you should check out the below interview with NE members Jason Payne (one question) and Douglas McCarthy (all the questions.) If you make it through you get a special video reward…

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Jason Payne: when I was five I used to time my bathroom breaks with a girl in my kindergarten class so we could show each other our areas of special purpose.

Douglas McCarthy: Hahahaha! Well when my same sex situations never panned out I guess.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

DM: I suppose my least favorite stereotype about straight people is what the majority of straight people show as a reality everyday… INTOLERANCE!

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

DM: Same as any other community. Understanding and respect.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

DM: Not being a fucking idiot.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

[Ed. Note: They didn't answer this one, but let's go ahead and pretend it's Trent Reznor. That'd be hot, no?]

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

DM: We give a shit.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

DM: Pure entertainment, energy and punishing dancing.

The trio is returning again to the world of space-themes, falsettos, Nintendo noises and epic choruses on their Dec. 14th sophomore release The Crystal Axis. They will be playing their last show of a mini-tour tomorrow at Chicago’s Empty Bottle and I pray to god they make it through DC next year. To tide you over, though, you should check out adorable front man Vincent Juggernaut’s thoughts on being straight.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Vincent Juggernaut: I remember when I was a kid and discovering Punky Brewster for the first time, and forming a bit of a crush on her. I think this crush also extended to the cartoon version of her on the animated version of the series.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

VJ: People think we’re all good at bowling and bad at interior design. I’m actually bad at both bowling and interior design. A double threat.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

VJ: I feel obliged to let them dance free through the streets, and if they need a soundtrack to this then we’re on call.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

VJ: Potholes. Physical, emotional and galactical. Knowing when and when not to open doors for people.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

VJ: Theadore Roosevelt. One of the forces behind the Panama Canal, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, plus they named the Teddy Bear after him. Say no more. However Ben Kingsley also has a certain je ne sais quoi…

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

VJ: I think we’re more interested in experimenting and exploring more diverging paths than most bands. We never know if the the audience will follow us on those paths but it makes it more fun for us.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

VJ: Because it will be a night of world class entertainment, plus it will invigorate and make you feel like living again, good times!

I wish that Canadian popster Matthew Adam Hart, nee The Russian Futurists, was some gay kid’s dad. Beside the fact that his new album The Weights on The Wheels is better than any album your dad made (except you, Bijou Philips) he also sounds like an ideal supportive parent. He acknowledges that things are easier for straight white guys, takes no shame in being really into a hot trans woman and seems to be challenging this county’s queer ladys into a pussy-eat-off.

Mr. Hart is bringing the magic to DC’s Red Palace tonight, and several other US cities in the coming weeks. Check out those dates and a video below the fold. Enjoy!

***

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Matthew Adam Hart: I think when I saw Vana White on Wheel of Fortune as a child. That sealed it. I was like “She’s so glamorous, I gotta get me some of that!!”

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

MAH: That we can’t eat pussy. That’s not true, I’ll throw down with against any gay girls. I’ve got mad skills.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

MAH: I think everyone’s obligation is to stop making such a big fuss about our differences. The less we tiptoe around things, the better off we are. [Ed. Note: Agreed on the second part, and don't you mean "pussyfooting?"]

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

MAH: I think we’re doing OK. I’ve never felt any challenges about anything socially. I’m a white, straight guy. Things are not hard for me at all.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

MAH: This is a tough question. I’m not sure if transsexuals count but that would make it a lot easier. (Vanity). I guess I would say John Hamm from Mad Men if I was really gonna go for it. Go big or go Hamm!

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

MAH: I just try not to sound exactly like everyone else. I think if you stand out, you’re alright. My whole purpose is to make myself stand out from the pack.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

MAH: Because I’m finally happy to be on stage, playing with a great live band. I’ve let my inner performer come out of the closet.

If that’s what you’d order at the proverbial diner of musical preference then you’d probably hold a candle for Lindstrøm. Along with his vocalist Christabelle, Lindstrøm makes some of the nicest space-age bachelor pad music this side of Daft Punk and Stereolab having a baby with just a touch of Moroder. He’s coming to the states for a very-brief tour tomorrow and answered our “Ask A Straight Guy” questions to give TNG a preview.

Check out the interview, and the tour dates and video below it. And if that picture makes you wanna ask him out, get in line.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Hans-Peter Lindstrom: Never really wondered about it.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

HPL : I do not have any special preferences.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

HPL: To make good music. But that obligation is not limited to gay people only.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

HPL: I do not think being a “straight” person is that challenging, to be honest…

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

HPL: C-3PO

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

HPL: I get up at 7 every morning and take my kid to the kindergarten, then go to work at Lindstrøm Studio at 9. Then I eat lunch at 12. Then I pick up my kid at 5 and go home and make dinner and watch some tv and read after the kids gone to bed. Then I go to bed around 11.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

HPL: I take my obligations seriously!

Lindstrom on Tour:

Fri.	Nov. 12	San Francisco, CA @ Mezzanine
Sat.	Nov. 13	New York, NY @ LPR
Sun.	Nov. 14	Chicago, IL @ Empty Bottle

Wow. I was sad when UK dance-punks Does It Offend You, Yeah? skipped their DC date because headlining act Kele cancelled, but this interview more than makes up for it. Not only does the quote I pulled for the headline make a great soundbite (though I don’t condone the sentiment, but also think that since the band toured with a queer guy they can’t be that homophobic) but they mention dicks like beer cans and annoying frat boys. It’s a fun read.

They unfortunately don’t have any dates coming up in the US, but guitarist Matthew Derham’s answer about being straight more than make up for it.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Matthew Derham: Not sure I ever have to be honest. Do you ever realize that kind of thing? I see fellas and think ” he looks quite cool” and that thought must mean that surely no man is truly ” straight”!

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

MD: Not being able to dance. Total bollocks! My manager is as straight as Rambo’s headband and he is an ex-UK breakdancing champion so that is total bollocks.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

MD: What? None! All my gay friends have better jobs, make better money and get laid at whole heap more than I do so maybe the gay community should oblige themselves to me for a bit :-)

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

MD: Skinny Jeans. Thick jock wankers who want to be your friend on the off chance that you know Oasis or Kasabian. Ellen Degeneres is a breeder-hating bastard so maybe her:-)

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

MD: James Rushent, singer from Does It Offend You Yeah. He’s dreamy.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

MD: Spontaneous music. Delivered with total fuckin gusto, no questions asked! Simple. On our day we can stay up with any fucker live, bring em on. We will knock the fuckers down!

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

MD: Straight cut boys. [Ed. Note : Dont know if that means cute or cut. Don't care.] Faces like angels. Dicks like cans of Bud. [Ed. Note: I'm there!]

There is very little chance that you would mix up Eli "Paper Boy" Reed and Sharon Jones if you only saw their pictures. But put on their music and it gets a little murkier. For someone who looks like the missing Jonas Brother (not a bad thing) he's got more soul in his little finger than I do at all. But I'm also a sad, washed up person so maybe that's not saying much. More soul in his hair than Adam Levine's whole body? More soul in one lapel of his sharkskin suit than Hall or Oates, but not both at the same time? Either way I like Eli's music a lot and was psyched that he answered these questions.

But put on their music and it gets a little murkier. For someone who looks like the missing Jonas Brother (not a bad thing) he’s got more soul in his little finger than I do at all. But I’m also a sad, washed up person so maybe that’s not saying much. More soul in his hair than Adam Levine’s whole body? More soul in one lapel of his sharkskin suit than Hall or Oates, but not both at the same time? Either way I like Eli’s music a lot and was psyched that he answered these questions.

He’s touring for the next week or so, including two gigs in the DC area. You can check out his schedule and a video below. Thanks, Eli!

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Eli Reed: I remember being really nervous on the first day of kindergarten and then seeing this girl as I walked in the door and instantly feeling at ease. Naturally, she wasn’t interested in me in the least and made my life miserable for the next 8 years. Maybe that’s why I ended up writing so many sad songs….

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

ER: That straight men can’t dress sharp. I like sharkskin suits and Italian knits, not flannel shirts!

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

ER: Honestly, I feel the same obligations to all my fans regardless of race, age or sexual orientation and that’s to make good music that makes people feel good.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

ER: I don’t know if there are too many challenges that are unique to straight people. I think just being open and accepting to all cultures and walks of life is the most important thing.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

ER: True Love’s [Eli's backing band] bassist Mike Montgomery.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

ER: Well, I think musically the difference is clear because my set of influences is pretty markedly different from most indie bands or artists. I think what really sets me apart though is the lack of irony in my music. So many bands today have a wink and a nod in everything they do but I really like to write and sing songs that are straightforwardly emotional. That’s what it’s all about for me.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

ER: I think we put on the best live show on the road right now. I think the band is the best it’s ever been and the songs will make you dance, make you cry and everything in between.

True story: DJ Will Eastman, DC’s preeminent spinner and all-around-nice guy, once asked me to appear in a music video of his. (It’s embedded below, and pardon my awful dance moves.) He had a cameo playing the “barback” and I made a joke about “barbacking” not being very safe. Of everyone in the room, he’s the only one who laughed, because he was the only hetero present that knew what I was talking about.

I obviously don’t take barebacking itself lightly, but Will’s awareness shows how in tune he is with DC’s gay community. His Bliss Dance Party has consistently been a great and queer-friendly night out, and his new venue U Street Music hall is, hands down, one of DC’s best places to dance.

So that’s why I’m so psyched to be featuring will in this Ask A Straight Guy interview. His throwing Bliss this Saturday at U Hall with special guest DJ Philadelphyinz, and I strongly suggest you check it out.

***

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Will Eastman: When a friend brought one of his father’s Playboy Magazines to school in 6th grade. A teacher confiscated it but not until after all my friends and I had each nabbed a souvenir. I think I saved that clipping until I was a senior in high school (just kidding.) [Ed. Note: Are you sure, Will?]

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?
WE: That they’re logical. I mean, some of them clearly don’t think straight.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

WE: Whoa, things got serious all the sudden. :) Well, I’m a DJ and music producer so I feel my primary obligation to the gay community is to DJ well and make tracks and remixes that incite my gay friends to get down. I also feel that if you’re an American of conscience you should voice your support for gay marriage rights.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

WE: Lindsay Lohan and global warming, but primarily Lindsay Lohan.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

WE: David Beckham. But it would have to be at his place. And he’d have to be out of town. And Victoria would have to be home… alone.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

WE: I work my ass off to do what I do well. I maintain no indie mythology that it’s all just cool and easy and shit just happens. I work hard so that you have a good time. I love my job and believe that’s a fair trade.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

WE: Because the music will be awesome and you’ll meet the man/woman of your dreams. And we’ll have my friends the Philadelphyinz guest djing. And I will be djing in my underpants. [Ed. Note: I'm there!]

Dreampop extraordinaires A Sunny Day in Glasgow (who you may remember from their TNG TV cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Everywhere") are about to embark on a small tour in support of their great new album, "Autumn Again." It's cool enough that you can download the whole thing for free on their website, but its even cooler that frontman Ben Daniels answered some of our questions about being straight as well.
One of my favorite bands of 2009 is quickly becoming one of my favorite bands of 2010. Dreampop extraordinaires A Sunny Day in Glasgow (who you may remember from their TNG TV cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Everywhere”) are about to embark on a small tour in support of their great new album, “Autumn Again.” It’s cool enough that you can download the whole thing for free on their website, but its even cooler that frontman Ben Daniels answered some of our questions about being straight as well. A band who sounds like Cocteau Twins? An open minded straight guy? A free new album? I think it’s about to be a sunny day in my office as well.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Ben Daniels: I would say my early 20s. Girls never really liked me until then and my family always thought I was gay and I didn’t have enough evidence to refute it to them or me until then.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

BD: Maybe that we all like sports? I guess that’s just straight men.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

BD: I guess none that I wouldn’t have the straight community, or people in general. If I was a senator or in some sort of position to help advance society I would probably feel more obligations.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

BD: Self-actualization

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

BD: [Pet Shop Boy's] Neil Tennant, but only if he would promise to sing me “It Couldn’t Happen Here” and maybe “Always on My Mind”. Actually, he could sing me anything.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

BD: Melody?

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

BD: We’re pretty good live. We spent half of this year on tour and we are super tight. And new songs! Also, Ryan got a new bass which is really hot.

Tour dates at the abover hyperlink, and video below the interview. Hope you like ‘em.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Quinn Walker: When I first saw Maid Marian in Disney’s Robinhood.

The New Gay: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

QW: That we are boring.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

QW: I don’t feel any obligations, but I do feel a strong connection toward anyone who feels like an outcast or discriminated against.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s

QW: Ummmm, I don’t think straight people have any specific challenges that anyone else does not face. I feel the real challenge is acceptance and understanding for most I guess.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

QW: My bandmates.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

QW: I don’t think I do. I just do what comes naturally. There is a lot of pretension and bitterness in the art world. I think, and I hope I’ve always remained modest and kind to anyone deserving of it.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

QW: Because we rock so hard! There goes my previous answer. And Brian may take off his shirt.

I’m gonna say this once: Fuck Baltimore. It’s a great city but they have a habit of getting live shows that we don’t. For example, Atari Teenage Riot. The German industrial punks recently reunited and have been signed to Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak record label. They aren’t gracing DC with their presence yet, but are hitting a bunch of other cities in the next week or so. You can see their full tour dates and a video below the interview.

And what an interview it is! Frontman Alec Empire confesses he might not be straight, talks about tits and paints a pretty vivid picture of growing up Berlin. Check it out!

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Alec Empire: I never realized that haha…I fuck people when I connect with them…if we decide to do so…I believe that this separates us from animals, we can choose who we want to have sex with. Those who are afraid of who we are as humans are just part of a dying, older version of us.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

Alec: That it’s all about sex. Something like that maybe?… I don’t think in those categories anyway, so those simple answers some people give seem stupid to me. Stereotypes don’t exist for me. I am the living example. You can wave tits in front of me, but I am immune to that stuff. So marketing people have a hard time figuring me out….

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

AE: I think that anything interesting in art and music was happening first in the gay scene. In Berlin techno and anything interesting electronic music was starting right there. Just an example. The Love Parade, the big techno parade in Berlin, used to be an important statement for tolerance and freedom…until it got so big that even the knuckleheads appeared there and started beating up gays. The whole event lost its spirit right there. I hate to generalize people, but the gay artists I worked with tend to focus a lot deeper on their work, they get to a different level…while the straight ones think about finding a women to have kids with or something…ok it’s a bit simple to put it like that. But we share a lot when it comes to politics…and I mean that basic feeling that you are not part of the majority and therefore have to find your own way in life much sooner…Like there is no tomorrow. Straight men move much slower because they fear change….I tend to think that this might have to do with them worrying about their own family too much.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

AE: I find it very challenging to deal with religious people…it is almost impossible to make them understand anything…but I don’t give up. Religion provides a grid for people, it feels like a safety net to them, but it’s an illusion. I guess a long time ago it united people and moved things forward. Nowadays it prevents important changes from happening. I am not a religious person at all, so it took me a while to understand how much for example Christian religion and its music rules dominate the industry. From Radiohead to Animal Collective…a lot of that is subconscious of course. Most people are not even aware of it. The majority of ‘new’ music uses modern production techniques but very deep down nothing has changed. It’s a very complex discussion. The challenge is to try to move on with all that heavy baggage from the past.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

AE: You mean a famous person? Everything is politics, even when I have sex…I could go gay with a lot of men…The Pope, Tom Ford, Alexander Skarsgard, just a few examples…you see I am not that romantic when it comes to that..

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

AE: I was born in Berlin, a city which was divided by the Wall, I walked to school while soldiers with machine guns were watching from observation towers, I started riots with my band, got arrested for it, in my home country Germany, they censored some of my records. The same country did kill my grandfather in a concentration camp….Put me next to indie bands with 4 guys with beards and glasses…trust me I stand out , I don’t need to even play music…

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

AE: It’s the most physical musical experience you’ll ever have. I know many bands have this list of answers they tick of in interviews, but we mean that. There is only one Atari Teenage Riot and we blow any other band off stage. Our show is like sex…until you haven’t done it, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

In the case of solo act Moneybrother (Nee’ Anders Wendin,) it’s not his smoothly infectious mix of hummable disco/rock, or his high profile tours with bands like Rhett Miller and Franz Nicolay. It’s not the buzz behind his new , Real Control, or the Swedish grammy he won for his 2003 debut. It’s not how much I like the song “Born Under a Bad Sign,” embedded below. Nope, Moneybrother (named for the two words his brother could pronounce in English) has a brand of Swedish tomato soup that bears his name. That, ladies and gentlemen, is success.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Moneybrother: I come from the woods. From the smallest village there is. Around there we’re just tall, white, straight people – at least thats what I thought. When I meet my first homosexual friend it was about the first time I ate my first avocado. I guess I was 16. Before then I knew little about the many sexual options besides a boy loving a girl.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

MB: We can’t dress. Yes we can!

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

MB: As a human being I feel my obligation is to spread some good vibrations. To my homosexual brothers as well as to my straight ones. When it comes to lovin, you can’t be wrong. Nobody should tell another person that what they feel inside their hearts it wrong.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

MB: I guess we have to work harder to put our first guy in Madonna’s dance squad.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

MB: Some gentle dude that would go easy on me. I mean Iggy Pop might be cool but he would probably end up slaying me.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

MB: I think of that sometimes. But, I guess, if you want to find a band sounding like Fleet Foxes you just take your pick out of the hundreds there are. Something that sounds like me nowadays would be much harder to find.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

MB: Cause you are very welcome to come and I will make it worthwhile.

Beards? Check. Flannel? Check. Canadian heritage? Check, Check, Check. Blog rockers Hey Rosetta! hits all the accepted visual landmarks of what makes a contemporary band “indie” but they’ve also mastered a couple of the other nuances, like pretty voices and tight, earnest songwriting, that make them a natural inclusion in the pantheon of TNG’s queried straight people. Their frontman Tim Baker was nice enough to answer our questions, even if he does wanna bang Michael Buble.

Interview’s below, and video and tour dates are below that. Enjoy!

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Tim Baker: I fell in love with a girl named Adrienne in my pre-school. I guess I would’ve been about 4 years old. I thought she was the best. She and cheerios and Ry Cooder and tiny metal cars. It could have just as easily been another boy, I suppose, (say, Adrian) ’cause back then it was all blurry and momentary and early feelings with no words or labels. Though in its essence I suppose it still is. And I suppose that’s just the discovery this question intended me to make. Nice work.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

TB: That a straight man can’t pick out an outfit or decorate a room or tell if another man is good-looking. What am I, blind? And thick? And proud of it?

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

TB: I know these questions are ironic, but I seriously do feel the need to let people know that it’s juvenile and disgusting to use the word ‘gay’ to describe something they don’t like. and for dudes to make fun of other dudes by insinuating that they’re gay. My adult friends still do this! It’s bizarre and sad. Also whenever some politician gets on with bullshit about how gay marriage and equality is wrong and then brings up the fucking bible when discussing actual federal policy (though, thankfully, this hardly ever happens in Canada), I make sure to talk about it incredulously for a while afterwards.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

TB: Haha. That’s kinda tough. Which is nice. I guess, as a single guy, it’s kinda hard to have lasting, loving, platonic relationships with females.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

TB: Michael Buble. And maybe Brett Favre. I guess I like a last name that’s tricky to pronounce.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

TB: Well, we’re not really as cool as the rest of them. I’ve always tried to write honestly and earnestly. And we’ve always tried to arrange our music as something honest and earnest and unencumbered by trends or pressures. We don’t strive to be hip or sound like bands we love. And neither do we strive to be different from them, for that matter. I take what comes out, rewrite it til I feel it’s strong and clear, and then we try and make it move.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

TB: Because I imagine they’d enjoy it. And I’d come out and see theirs. Honestly, come to St. John’s. You can stay at my house.

So what better time to get acquainted with them? Like We Are Scientists, this trio is neither a chillwave group or someone who takes themselves too seriously. We need more bands like that. So check ‘em out.

Their members Mike Lamantia Jr. and Zan (one name, apparently) were nice enough to answer our questions bout being straight. Answers are below, and tour dates and video below that.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Mike Lamantia, Jr.: When I was 4 years old and had sex with my “MY BUDDY” doll, pretending it was a girl.

Zan: Do you ever realize? Our society loves to categorize people into black and white dichotomies when most often, phenomena like expressions of sexuality occur on a spectrum…wow, that sounds like I copy and pasted that from Wikipedia…

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

MLJ: The worst stereotype is that all straight people watch sports, drink beer, and are homophobes.

Z: Agreed. I do not need to buy a Ford F-150 to make up for the size of my genitals.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

MLJ: I don’t feel like I have any obligations… Humans are humans.

Z: We all have a finite time to spend on earth, so we should live in a way that increases pleasure and reduces suffering, so long as our pursuit of pleasure is not at the expense of someone else’s pursuit of pleasure.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

MLJ: Dressing decent and all of a sudden, there’s a chance that I might be gay.

Z: That I should get a job, get married, buy a house, procreate, go on cruises, get old, have grandchildren, die, have a nice funeral, etc. etc. And look, before I knew it, I already completed the first two steps of this straight, middle class paradigm…

5. If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

MLJ: Actor Bookeem Woodbine

Z: Jared Leto…he looks a hell of a lot better than most women…

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

MLJ: We are realistic about music and our goals as artists… We really do things for ourselves and no one else.

Zan: For sure…I looked in a music mag the other day for the first time in years and was shocked by how many bands are out there and have some machine behind them producing hype. It was overwhelming…how do you sort through the mess? Are we any different? All I know is we have put our time in in this band and others, and, as glib as it sounds, you just have to listen for yourself and make the judgment of whether or not we are worth supporting.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

MLJ: If you come out to our show, you might be disappointed… But there is a good chance you might fall in love.

Z: You never know what you are going to get…

Call them post-Peaches? NYC electro-raunch duo Hank & Cupcakes call to mind any number of cheeky new-new wave bands like New Young Pony Club, all which trace their ancestry from the Filthy—mouthed Corset Queen. A band like this screams “bi vibe” but are actually a married couple from Israel who were at least straight enough to answer these questions. Why does that all make it hotter?

They were nice enough to answer our questions, so you should go check out their tour if you can. Dates in link above. Joy Division cover video below.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Cupcakes:I think we always just knew but a guy from Cencus just knocked on our door while answering this and asked me if I was female and if Hank was a male and we just got really confused…

Hank: I’m not straight, I’m a gay man who only has sex with women.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

C: There are so many..wouldn’t know where to start

H: That they have too much sex with the opposite sex!

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

H&C: We feel obligated to dance your off your feet and make sure you all get laid by the end of our set.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

H&C: The NYPD

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?
C: That would be my best friend in junior high school, we were so close it would have been very natural. Or actually..Sasha Grey. That would be HOT!!!

H: Sasha Baron Cohen

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

H&C: We don’t label our music as indie, you could say our music is pop with a raw edgy twist. We’ve been setting ourselves apart from the crowd mainly by being ourselves and keeping a high level of interest and energy. We’re constantly reinventing ourselves at shows both musically and visually. Our fans know they’re always in for a new experience which is why they always come back for more.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

C: Because it’s music and performance like you’ve never seen before, and Hank is hot.

Ah, beach rock. Will we ever escape its sandy clutches? While the current wavve (pun intended) of sun-drenched, fuzzy guitars might not go anywhere in the near future, it’s great that a couple of its bastions are having such a great time. Florida rockers Surfer Blood are gearing up for a whole slew of tour dates, and in preparation their guitar player Thomas Fekete was nice enough to answer some of our questions about being straight. I think you’ll enjoy the answer to number 5 the most.

Check out the interview below, and below that is an exclusive TNG performance clip of the band.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Thomas Fekete: This is tough. I don’t think I can recall an exact moment. Sometimes I still feel a bit confused… Don’t tell my girlfriend please. Or my Dad.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

TF: That we are really good at sports. The only thing I am good is spending money. Money money money.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

TF: We are putting the red white and blue back into the rainbow.

TNG: . What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

TF: It’s a tough life man! Gotta climb into my truck every morning and grab some 25 cent Circle K hot-dogs, keep up with my bills to pay off my flat screen tv and blue ray player, drive my ATV around and shoot guns, and most importantly, I must keep Christ our lord and savior happy.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

TF: James Franco, no questions asked. The man is beautiful. Milk blew me away. I was giddy throughout the entire film. It was dark in the theater so nobody could see me blushing.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

TF: We aren’t from Brooklyn and we aren’t cool.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

TF: Because we are bringing the beach to all of the big cities!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ehh? Ehh?

California kings Admiral Radley come straight from the gates with members of the most underappreciated, and consistently awesome, band of the past 10 or so years: Jason Lytle and Aaron Burtch of Grandaddy. Factor in that the other two members are alumni of Earlimart and maybe you should be thinking “hmm… this might be a show worth seeing.” Especially since Sr. Lytle’s “sunshine on a microchip” vocals sound just like they always have, which is that they make you so unsure what’s happy and what’s sad that you just have to sit down and listen to it all again.

Admiral Radley plays DC tomorrow at DC9. Everyone else should check their tour schedule.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Aaron Burtch: Probably my first boner lookin’ at Hustler in 3rd grade. Also, in that same issue there was a picture of the unknown comic from the gong show who was naked with a bag on his ding dong and I’m pretty sure, while I thought it was funny, I wasn’t attracted to him.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

AB: That we can’t give good blow-jobs.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

AB: It’s small, but I always correct people when they use “gay” to mean “lame” or in a negative conotation.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

AB: Not to dive too deep into stereotypes, but my gay friends look better, smell better, eat better food, and decorate better. And I try, but I just cant do it. I just end up being sloppy ol’, pussy-eatin’ me.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

AB: David lee Roth.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

AB: We’re fuckin’ twice as old as they are. And I hate indie rock.

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

We’re livin legends. The old bald eagle Jason Lytle, he’s still got it. TNG

"I've got friends in low places" is a lyric from a song which was played at the end of almost every high school dance I attended. High Places is a band liked by people. Rob Barber and Mary Pearson, who met at a house show in Kalamazoo, Michigan, formed in Brooklyn after a pen-pal-ship, and now live in LA and tour. High Places spins other-dimensionally enchanting music with lyrics worth listening to repeatedly, but indecipherable in a decipherable way. In one word: Good.

Tim Gage was born in Port Angeles, WA, and believes that Sasquatch could very well be Jesus

“I’ve got friends in low places” is a lyric from a song which was played at the end of almost every high school dance I attended.

Check out High Places on MySpace: here

Rob Barber recently sat down with TNG contributor Tim Gage to answer some of our most burning questions.

The New Gay: When did you realize you were “straight”? What did/does that mean to you?

Rob Barber: You mean when growing up? Based on the majority of my formative relations, I’m afraid that I may not be qualified to answer this question.

TNG: What is your favorite stereotype about straight people?

RB: Hmm.. Maybe that they all honestly believe that they are 100 percent straight, and no ifs, ands, or buts.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

RB: Easy! Definitely a lack of interesting clothing options.

TNG: RuPaul notes: “Honey, you’re born naked. Everything else is drag.” Would you care to add to this?

RB: Why try to improve upon to RuPaul? It is like trying to start a cool holiday the day after Halloween and expecting people to be stoked about it. If you can dig it up, I do remember, however, reading an amazing and early RuPaul interview in (I think) Maximum Rock N’ Roll when I was in high school, in the late 80′s. It was full of pretty valuable quotes.

TNG: Are you The New Gay? If you’re not sure/”no comment,”who is? Bands, stuff people should check out?

RB: Hecuba and We are The World! They are the future of experimental/performative dance music.

TNG: What will music sound like in ten years? If that’s a bad question, say something else.

RB: Well, based on the latest skinhead trend in fashion, I would say Oi! music, but with a more classical leaning.

TNG: Why should people come out and see your show?

RB: I just bought new shoes in Stockholm. I will be wearing them. My old tour shoes smell like dead fish.

Their debut record Volupsa was just released in April, and the bands has been making waves ever since. Members, Stephen Hindman and Penelope Trappes recently took time, before starting a North American tour, to describe what it is like being a straight band.

TNG: When did you first realize you were straight?

Stephen Hindman: When I decided against making out with the guy I knew in college who thought he was the female version of Morrissey.

Penelope Trappes: Love is love and can happen at any time with anyone.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

SH: That straight guys have bad taste in furniture and that straight girls just want to be married.

PT: That straight people are all boring and suburban.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

SH: To continue to be influenced by Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret.

PT: To share love and to show that minor differences aren’t so important.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

SH: To be more straight.

PT: To be more gay.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

SH: Johnny Depp

PT: Vanessa Paradis

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artists in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

SH: Our impeccably messy hairstyles?

PT: It’s got to be our array of $30 microphones…

TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see your show?

SH: It’s no fun in the closet.

PT: Unless you’re playing 7 minutes in heaven…

Catch the band on tour this June:

Comedian Patton Oswalt, best known for a deeply disturbing riff on KFC’s “Famous Bowl” (see below) will be performing at the Lincoln Theatre this Thursday as part of Brightest Young Things’ Bentzen Ball comedy festival. If Oswalt’s frequent presence on the Onion AV Club and recent starring role in “Big Fan” are any indicators, he is fast becoming an “it” kid of indie stand up comedy. And apparently unwitting vegetarian activist, as who ever wants to eat chicken again after watching the clip below?

Oswalt was nice enough to answer some of our questions about being straight. You can check out the answers below.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Patton Oswalt: At a screening of Top Gun.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

PO: Our tolerance of gay people.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

PO: To provide a visual warning of what would happen if they stopped working out and ingested a diet of mostly carbs and grease.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

PO: Hetero-accessible ramps.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

PO: Jason Statham. Although that’s already happened.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” comics in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

PO: With my strict and fawning adherence to the mainstream.

TNG: Finally, why should Washington, DC come out and see you perform tonight?

PO: Because I will reveal the Four Keys of the Uul-tharnen. Oh, and the dick jokes.
