an Francisco-based psych/folk band The Dodos is currently touring The States to bring their trippy, melodic campfire-on-mild-LSD sound to the devoted masses. A band notable for taking the electronic elements out of today’s favored pschydelic/expiremental sound and making it organic, the former duo actually added a vibraphone player to their lineup just for us.
To get you pumped for their show tonight at the Rock and Roll Hotel, the band’s drummer Logan Kroeber was nice enough to answer some of our questions about being straight. You can check out those, and a Dodos video sampler, below.

“I Became a Prostitute,” “Cold Days from The Birdhouse,” and “Walking for Two Hours” are not, in fact, chapter headings from your grandfathers’ depressing how-I-got-to-America memoirs. Instead, they are song titles written by The Twilight Sad, a Scottish band who does not even for a minute temper its epic, majestic songwriting with things like levity, sunshine or a sonic depth of less than 12 feet. You need waterwings and a kickboard to get through the pools of their writing, but those that like the band well enough to attend their show tonight at the Black Cat (or its accompanying tour) know that the exploration has its own rewards. Rewards like cathartic wailing, mild, passable depression and a newfound appreciation for Englands’ bawdy neighbors to the North.

LA noise-rock outfit Health has a secret. And no, I didn’t catch them giving handjobs in a sauna, much as I would’ve liked to (That’s you, guy in the blue hat.) Instead, it’s that their Classic Rawk guitars, videogame sound effects and vocoder whisperings actually exist in support melodies and song structures, not in spite of them. This, blessedly, makes their finished product more than just your usual head-thrashing, parent-conniptioning run of the mill rock. This is why I was so excited to hear member John Famiglietti’s answers to our usual annoying questions about being straight.

Rock Plaza Central, purveyors of Tom Waits-style rock, have created a baroque, raspy, oompa power house in their newest album “At The Moment of Our First Needing.” It’s been on heavy rotation at my house, mostly for its ability to provide unique music that is quietly compelling without turning into mere background noise. DC residents can check out RPC at the 9:30 Club on Saturday, Sept. 19 when they open for the Weakerthans. And people elsewhere in the country can check out their extensive touring schedule if they’re intrigued.

New Wave-inspired Brooklyn band The Jaguar Club just recently put out their debut album “And We Wake Up Slowly.” And luckily for us, they are celebrating this fact by playing a show at Mirrors (33 New York Ave. NE) on Friday, Sept. 18th. Their bassist Yoi Fujita was nice enough to answer some of our questions about being straight. Check ‘em out, and a Jaguar Club video below that.

San Francisco party band Butterfly Bones sound like a lot of fun. Besides the fact they MGMT-style, take no prisoners, “must be wearing sunglasses indoors or else” style synth music, they also indicate below that they tried to play an entire show with their drummer in a shrimp costume. Oh, and they’re a bunch of straight guys gracing tonight’s Mixtape Dance Party a Dahlak (guest DJ’d by yours truly, located at 1771 U St., NW) which means they like to make the homos dance. How could I resist getting their keyboard player Steve Lance to answer some of our questions about being straight?

Felix Da Housecat rode the earliest wave of electroclash to notoriety with his 2001 hit “Silver Screen” (You know, the “endless pleasure in a lee-moo-zeen” song) and is back in a big way with his newest album He Was King. Even if you hate all things electro, it’s lead single “We All Want to Be Prince” is not just catchy, but true. Prince is one of those rock stars that dress like a circus reject, hasn’t been relevant in years and could be kind of a homophobe, but would still get mobbed at the mall. There would be far worse things than being prince. Thanks for reminding us what we aren’t, Felix!
Da Housecat kicks off a series of live DJ sets tonight in Atlanta. Even if you can’t go see him, you can check out his answers to our questions about being straight.

LA musician Frankel’s new album, “Anonymity is The New Fame,” does an admirable job of recreating some of the 70’s style, singer/songwriter style of music that is the stock of quality classic rock stations everywhere. While Frankel (nee Michael Orendy) does not have any plans to tour in the near future, my chances of seeing Harry Nillson or Al Stewart are similarly low and it hasn’t affected my fondness for their craft.

Sounding like an undead ancestor of Jamie Liddell, it is no surprise that Brooklyn musician Cale Parks got his start as White Williams’ drummer. Both share a gift for turning the conventions of synths and ostensibly deep lyrics into something gripping, disquieting and, paradoxically, affirming in its embrace of the seemy. Parks was nice enough to answer some of our questions at being straight. If you’ve gotten this far, and still haven’t heard his new EP “To Swift Mars,” I recommend you do so.
