Keep Shelly in Athens is a Grecian duo with mad blog hype. Their first 12" came on Forest Family Records, the label helmed by Gorilla Vs Bear, and the hype didn't stop there. Countless music magus have featured the band with their sexy laid back sound mixing Balearic and down-tempo electronic. Today we have a new track from the band on the eve of their US debut. "DIY" is a sultry track that is perfect for late nights or long drives. The brooding piano mixes well with the well placed horn hits. Take a listen and keep on the look out for more from this band. Also check out their tour dates in the image.

Jessie and The Toy Boys, the outfit for singer Jessie Malakouti, have been having quite a year. Their first single "Push It" became a mild success and after successful roars with Britney Spears and a stint on the Identity Fest Jessie is prepping her first full length. Which bring suss to "Let's Get Naughty." On the surface this is another Lady Gaga, Dev, insert pop star here inspired song. I'm sure some will hate on this for the sophomoric lyrics but it is a fun tune. Be sure to check out her debut album This is How Rumors Start out next year.

Guest contribution by Alex Testere, whose previous writing for The New Gay can be found here.

Alex Testere will be playing the role of THE INGÉNUE in this year’s performance of “Why Do I Live in New York?”. You may find him tucked safely inside a sweater on his fire escape, or talking to a Stevie Nicks record over a concoction of cardamom pods. He revels in voracious daydreams, opaque paint, Oxford commas, and the clumsy stumbles of a tongue with a task.

_____

At the end of my first five months in gay ol’ New York City, among encounters with men of all shapes and sizes (heh), with razor blade lips and high-fashion pouts, with glistening eyes and affectionate brows; after inviting into my home countless opportunities for romance and profound mutual discovery, I have reached this ultimate conclusion: I’m better off with bread.

My restless Monday (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday?) evenings with empty shot glasses and the lofty arrogance of personal politics always lead to the same question: how am I ever going to fall in that perfect pit of love with a man who feels the same, and when am I going to get laid, G-d damn it?! (Liquor loosens the lips.)

So I stumble, liquid, into the trite realization that love is private, unique, personal, and ultimately, a one-sided endeavor. What solace could there possibly be in this realization, you might wonder? That my love is a warm, malleable mess that I have the power to put into anything I please! I can fall in love with my Fleetwood Mac record, my needlepoint portraiture, my Tuesday nights on the couch with my newfound Netflix account. Love will live wherever I leave it, and I’ve left mine to leaven in a loaf of sourdough.

Right now, it’s a simple concoction of complex carbohydrates sitting on my countertop. A little lukewarm water and a little bit of flour form a beautiful pair. In up to my elbows, I formed it for myself, turned it in my hands until it was smooth, and left it to ferment. My little, sludgy friend is taking on a life of its own. Natural bacteria in the flour are now mating and multiplying—there’s an orgiastic microcosm in this little bowl.

Now, why the hell am I in love with this? This stinky schlop is the starter for a loaf of sourdough. Once it starts to smell like the inside of a piss-filled beer bottle, it needs feeding. I’ll fill it with more flour and water—and rid it of its excess—in the same delicate routine every morning until I’m ready to act. One teensy tablespoon will make it into the final loaf.

Like a helpless little monster, this bowl of shit needs me to survive. But it’s not an exasperating dependency. He provides for me as well: companionship on a dreary Sunday morning (what else can make me laugh as heartily as sneaking a peak beneath his raggedy blue towel!), a sense of urgency to return home at the end of the workday (I hope he hasn’t toppled out of his bowl!), and when the time comes, a smell like a crackly harvest morning filling my kitchen while I recline in bed with a book.

I may sound like a crazy person—and I am, to be sure—but there’s still something to be learned from this. Romance and beauty should be fostered wherever they can be claimed. Sure, there’s nothing in a loaf of bread like the clasp of a lover’s hand (though the uplifting aroma may parallel that mystifying cologne which always goes straight to my head), but there is certainly romance. There is romance in any private act of creation and discovery. And it is profound, it is beautiful, and it is my own; and I am blissfully, unabashedly, foolishly in love with a loaf of bread.

Guided By Voices announced that their Hopscotch date this year would be the last time you could see the 93-96 line-up or "classic" band together live. Right before the band were set to play their second last show ever the band announced a new GBV album recorded by the class line up for release next January. Of course the internet freaked out. GBV haven't been much of a heavy hitting band since the early days and now after a few tepid records (2004's Half Smiles for the Decomposed was just alight) and a hell of a lot of Pollard releases (including three AMAZING Boston Spaceships albums and one lengthy but rewarding double album) GBV are back doing what they do best. Today we have just shy of two minutes from GBV with a new tune from their 2012 release Let's Go Eat The Factory. "The Unskinable Fats Domino" is a tune that could've been written at any time and it could easily fit on any of their classic albums. That is a testament to Pollard's amazing song-writing and the band's superb skill.

Leader Johnny Jewel is also the founder of the label Italians Do It Better who are known for putting out amazing releases like label mate and italo fans Nite Jewel. The band has now finished their forth album Kill For Love and have posted a video for their first single to their Facebook page. The track is an amazing 80's inspired love song that is more daytime listening then the late night adventures of their previous record. The track is notable more high-fi then their previous work. Check the video out below and be sure to look out for their album dropping next year.

The 17 year old goth-pop star has been really making a name for herself this year. With the rise of Zola Jesus (who are playing tonight in DC!!!!!!!!!!!!) and Niki & The Dove, Charli XCX has finally found a foothold after her first single, three years ago, fluttered out. "Nuclear Seasons" is one part Zola Jesus and another Marina and the Diamonds. The up-beat pop track has all of the dramatic flair of Nika and Marina while still being an instant earworm. We are sure to hear more from Charli so keep your ears to the internet.

Future of The Left haven't released any music since 2009, but they haven't been entirely unproductive. The three piece lost a member then added two new ones and have been experimenting with their sound to get everything right. Now we have a new song "Polymers Are Forever" to be released on a new EP. The loud chugging track has the ferocious attitude of earlier tracks like "You Need Satan More Than He Needs You."

The Postelles have been kicking around the New York scene since 2008. They were signed to Capitol record, but during the time of the economic downfall and all the shit the American record labels were going through an album never surfaced. The band played key sets at CMJ, Bonnaroo, and SXSW while trying to tour as much as possible waiting for their big break. The band had secured an amazing producer in Albert Hammond Jr., of The Stoke,s to work on their tracks, and after waiting for almost a year their debut EP was released. All ready to tour the world with Interpol, the band was told that they were being let go from their major label, and their debut album suffered another blow. Now almost three years since first being scooped up by a major and existing as a band, The Postelles S/T debut album hit stores this past June. While most bands would feel the crushing blow and just discontinue, thank god the Postelles kept on going. Their debut is a throw-back 60's Rock and Roll record that is fun and playful and sounds very British. It is no wonder that this year the band are touring decent sized venues with two of their British peers The Wombats and The Kooks. Their debut actually sounds like the American Kooks, and though they haven't been featured in any Bud Lite Lime commercials you've probably heard their music featured on The Vampire Diaries, 90210 and most recently in the under-watched but incredibly fun (trust me it is one of my favorite shows on 2011) Revenge. Today we have two of the band's most loved songs, "White Night" and "123 Stop" both TV staples and hopefully sounds of your fall. "White Night" is an easy rock song with call and response vocals and a danceable groove. "1 2 3 Stop" sound psalmist like a slowed down version of the Kook's "Eddie's Gun" but tit packs a catchy chorus all of it's own. Check out the tracks and catch the band on tour with either The Wombats or the Kooks- you really can't go wrong (Though most of those Kooks dates are sold-out).

Mika Miko broke up last year and they have been sorely missed. Their intense live shows and telephone mic were amazing, but don't fear the sister duo Jessica and Jennifer Calvin have a new project Bleached. Bleached isn't as punk and loud as Mika Miko but a garage girl-group inspired band like the Vivian Girls or Frankie Rose. "Searching Through The Past" is their second single for Suicide Squeeze and it is a bouncy tack that recalls Hunx and his Punx with more pomp. They are playing CMJ this week, so if you are attending the fest check them out.

Claire Boucher aka Grimes has been riding the hype of her first two LPs and her split LP with D'Eon as well as a national tour supporting Lykkle Li and next year she is sure to be break out star when her highly anticipated LP Visions is released. Grimes created the record on GarageBand, but one listen to debut single "Oblivion" you can't tell. The darkwave electro track is as great a single as "Vanessa" as Boucher's vocals are in a constant state of falsetto recalling a child's voice. Grimes may never become a pop star on the level of Katy Perry, but "Oblivion" deserves a bid for a CW soundtrack (that was not a diss BTW).

Grimes created the record on GarageBand, but one listen to debut single “Oblivion” you can’t tell. The darkwave electro track is as great a single as “Vanessa” as Boucher’s vocals are in a constant state of falsetto recalling a child’s voice. Grimes may never become a pop star on the level of Katy Perry, but “Oblivion” deserves a bid for a CW soundtrack (that was not a diss BTW).

Drake's Take Care was supposed to be released on his birthday October 24th, but like all good (and bad) rap albums it got delayed. No big deal, as it was only a couple of weeks, November 15, and if we are to believe the Canadian raper, it was because of sample clearance. He didn't want us to go without hearing everything he;s created- so that's nice. And Drake has been very forward with reeling music from the album and it's subsequent deluxe edition all year, so it isn't like dude has left us hanging. Anyways, Drake premiered a new track from the highly anticipated album on Funkmaster Flex's radio show just last night. The track, "Make Me Proud" features Nicki Minaj in full hash-tag rap form ("I'm a star/ sheriff badge" "double d up ho/ Dolly Part'") as well as some sick laid back rhymes from Drake. The murky beat feels like a continuation of the beats from Drake's debut and it is a good thing. With all the rappers going electro it is nice to see someone with beats practically unheard of on modern rap radio.

Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter are better known as the electro-pop duo Phantogram. The band released their debut LP Eyelid Movies last year and it instantly became the soundtrack of late nights and episodes of Gossip Girl and other trendy CW shows. "Mouth Full Of Diamonds" dark electro captivated the hearts of indie-mindied kids with a love of the dance floor, but one thing you could never call the group is sunny. On 11/1 the group will release a mini-LP Nightlife and today we have the album's first single. "Don't' Move" is unlike the band's debut as it is a straight-up pop song. The track has a beat that is remittent of UK basked producer Star Slinger with it's cut up samples blending horns and a vocal bit slashed to hell. Barthel's vocals have an added echo and reverb making them more dreamy and chill-wave then Eyelid Movie's darker gritty tone.

Last week I dropped a tune by Jessie Ware who has had an incredible year after being featured on SBTRKT tracks and her commanding presence on another dustup track "The Vision (Let Me Breathe)" by Joker. Joker whose debut album for 4AD drops November 8th is an amazing twelve track record made up up singles like "My Trance Girl" and "Tron" with new bangers like "Lost" and "On My MInd." "The Vision" is an immediate standout, and Ware absolutely nails the song. I mean you feel her when se says she can "play big on her own." Joker has just released an alternative version of the highlight featuring up and coming rapper Freddie Gibbs. This new version gives Gibbs Ware's second verse but still bangs like the original. Take a listen below and peep The Vision when it drops November 8th.

Two mixtapes in and The Weeknd has taken over the dark R&B genre that fellow partner in crime Drake established with last year's Thank Me Later. Thursday took the Weeknd's style forward and now we have a new track "Initiation" which is like every Weeknd track, as it is about sex, drugs and self-loathing with a dark beat that is equal parts witch-house and dark R&B but the noticeable difference is the way someone has a permanent finger on the pitch-shifter. Only a few times in the four minute jam are the vocals left alone, instead the vocals go from super low to super high in waves. Weeknd supposedly have another free mix slated for this year, and this very well could be on it.

The recent film Weekend inhabits another, more recent camp of gay culture: gay naturalism. In the film, it is not non-gayness that is rejected, but instead any illusion that such a rejection is possible.
The creation of gay culture, for as long as something called “gay culture” has existed, has had as its primary driving force the desire for a queer utopia. Constrained by politics, ostracization, and misunderstanding in society, queers turned to art as the one realm in which some utopic vision of their lives could be attained.

Thus everything from Sappho, performing poetic transformations of the island of Lesbos into a playground of female homosexual desire, to Jean Genet‘s Our Lady of the Flowers, with a canonized drag queen whose lovers perfuse the streets of Paris with adoration, to gay bathhouses, constructed social spaces where homosexual desire was not only permissible but suffuse. Thus also the gay predilection for Camp, a sensibility of exaggerated emotion and loud desire, a utopia where the only consequences are aesthetic ones. These utopic visions not only offered an escape from the realities of gay life, but thoroughly rejected any vision that impinged upon their gayness.

But one wonders if Oscar Wilde would have changed his mantra from “art for art’s sake” if any other sake for his art had been allowed. The recent film Weekend inhabits another, decidedly recent camp of gay culture: gay naturalism. In the film, it is not non-gayness that is rejected, but instead any illusion that such a rejection is possible. The characters capture something very real, almost painfully so, about modern gay life. After all of our progress in realizing some vision of gay utopia–after Harvey Milk , the AIDS crisis, gay marriage, the end of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, to name just some milestones–there remain some very basic problems that each gay person must sort out for him or herself.

For one, coming out, and the eternal recurrence of it. We see this dealt with here without the sheen of “fabulousness,” most touchingly in the interaction between Russell and his straight best friend as Russell breaches the awkwardness in talking about his gay lover with him. Another problem very basic to gay lives is finding and creating meaningful sexual/romantic relationships when the percentage of those compatible in the world is so small, and will probably always remain so. So, in the movie, we see Russell and Glen meet at a seedy gay club that neither really want to be at yet both want to be with the people it contains. Also, of course, the problem of gay sex–not any more a problem than straight sex–at times difficult to navigate, uncomfortable, indomitable (no pun…well, some pun intended). The director of Weekend, Andrew Haigh, depicts this with a frank, unflinching eye, so much as to raise serious wonders whether it’s simulated or not (it’s simulated).

Certainly, the conditions of modern gay life allow for a film as nuanced and internal as Weekend to exist. After all, it was not in a time of great social turmoil that naturalism first emerged in the literature of the late 19th century, but precisely because society at large had reached a stage of ease and comfort in its modernity. Writers, unoppressed by their own social standings, turned to tell the stories of those who were to remind the readerly public that problems like these still existed. Likewise, the outward social standing of gays in mainstream culture has now reached a point of some resolution, so instead of turning to others who are more oppressed, gay voices can turn inward to tell the parts of themselves that are still oppressed. This film is a reminder, to gay and straight audiences, that there are still problems to be resolved in gay lives.

Yet it offers no resolution. Without giving away too much, suffice to say there’s no marriage plot, and no magical salve to remedy the deep-set issues of internalized homophobia in each of the characters. There is, however, art. Glen wants to create an art piece from interviews with his hook-ups and lovers, and Russell keeps a diary recording each one of his sexual encounters (Glen’s like a sort of Sam Steward “Stud File” and Russell’s like John Maynard Keynes’s sex diaries). This art is presented as creation without resolution, which could be said to be a theme for the whole film. We never see Glen present his art piece, and Russell’s diary is kept very private, only shared with embarrassment when he reads it to Glen. Such are the principles of naturalism: artifices that reject artificiality, depictions of reality that don’t believe in the reality of utopias, even a sort of pessimism that accepts resolution as never fully attainable.

I’m very fond of my gay utopias, my own and those I admire in gay cultural history. I left Weekend frustrated that it offered no such vision. I went to the mountaintop, and when I looked down, it looked like the side of the mountain I’d just climbed. If art offers no resolution for these utopic visions, where can I turn? Perhaps that’s the point. Instead of sating my desire for a better world to live in as a gay man, it agitated it. I left desperately wanting the relationship of the characters to work out, wanting each to feel out and proud and comfortable with his sexuality, wanting the community that they were in to be accepting and nurturing and fulfilling. I wanted all of these things in the movie, of course, because I want them in my own life. If the movie had resolved these issues, I would’ve never made the turn inward, but since it didn’t, I was forced to look at the conditions of my own life and direct my utopic desire there.

Naturalism and romanticism–the latter of which, ultimately, is where anything in the utopic camp of gay culture lies–each do not necessarily exclude the other. “Natural” aspects of culture are, at times, romantic. The weekend the couple spends together in the film is undeniably so. Likewise, “romantic” aspects of culture can be naturalistic. Take, for instance, the idea of gay marriage, which for so long existed only as an idea, now becoming increasingly a part of law. That gay culture can allow naturalism at this cultural moment means that something romantic in gay lives has been achieved, which is amazing. Hopefully, from here, we will see more emerge from gay naturalism to continue bridging the gap between utopia and reality.

Nite Jewel has been preparing her second record, all the while releasing amazing post-disco singles like "It Gets Through Your Head." Now after being on so many labels, Ramona Gonzalez has found herself a new home, Secretly Canadian. While she is busy at work with her second record and first for SC, Nite Jewel will release a new 7" "She's Always Watching You" on the yourstruly label. The a-side is a fantastic jam unlike her previous disco performances and is more in tune with the art-school R&B of the Dirty Projectors. Nite Jewl seems to be reaching for a more mainstream pop audience as well- just look at that cover and see if you can't spot Dev (though she has more talent than Dev).

Back in 1996 So So Def, the label helmed by Jermaine Dupri, and the label that brought us Da Brat released their first bass compilation, So So Def Bass Allstars Vol 1. The compilation was full of Miami bass music, the kind of shit that would rattle trunks and clubs. The best song off the compilation, and first single from the album "My Boo" by the Ghost Town DJs became my favorite song for so long. I was thrilled to hear it on the radio and even more excited to dance while it played on MTV. "My Boo" has since become a staple of (good) 90's nights, but in recent times it has come back in the form of Balam Acab's pitched up remix and this amazing cover from up-and-coming Brooklyn group Friends. Friends are a quintet one known as Perpetual Crush, helmed by Samantha Urbani and Lesley Hann. Earlier this year the band released their first single "Friend Crush" backed with the b-side "Feeling Dank." Their music is pop related with hints of Lykke Li's echo and focus on percusion. Lots of blogs have compared the band to another blog-riser Best Coast, but Friends are more East Coast party then West Coast weed music. Their new single "I'm His Girl" is backed with a cover of Ghost Town DJ's hit "My Boo." Friend's version keeps the synth lines from the original but replaces the bass rattle with Spectoresque drums and (gasp!) cowbell. I mean if anyone needed more cow-bell it would be "My Boo" right? Urbani and Hann's vocal range is stretched from their tough girl deeper range to their exquisite falsetto. Friends are a band to watch in 2012, as their first full-length is coming out. Take notice!

They kicked off the year with a free mixture but hid in the shadows releasing a track here and there. Don't fear, as the band have taken some time off from recording their third LP and have released a cover of the Outfield's "Your Love" recorded live in a sauna. The band slow the song down to just it's bare bones with Elin Kastlander singing the track beautifully. Sure Bon Iver released a cover of this song back in 2009, but the track still stays fresh. Now the duo have their first 7" and first release that costs money to own. The two song Girls Like Me 7" is six minutes of thrilling sample-pop taking from styles like doo-wop and modern indie. "Girls Like Me" is sung entirely from a girl's perceptive and sounds like a cover of a song from a long time ago. "Sarah (Meet Me In The Sauna) has an early Magnetic Fields vibe with it's hand-clap drum machine beats and guitar on-top. Both singers take on the vocals which are buried in the sonic fuzz of the track. If you haven't gotten in this band, as i've said before, you should because they are the next best thing. If you are into these tracks, buy the set digitally at Facebook, or pre-order the 7".

How could you look at that face and not go gay? (courtesy mtv)

There’ve been gay characters and situations on TV since before I was born, but my first “wow, this is real and I am loving it” crush on a gay TV personality was on Danny Roberts from MTV’s first New Orleans edition of The Real World. As I sit down to write my final article for TNG, I can’t think of a better way to wrap things up than to muse on where it all started.

I was a junior in high school and my family didn’t have cable, so in order to watch Real World I’d hang out with my friend Liz. Liz and her friends were all Mormons, and Liz and I thought we were into each other. We gave it our best shot, but really we didn’t stand a chance. Plenty of gay guys had sex with girls in high school, but I doubt many of them did while hanging out with Mormons and watching a TV show featuring adorable, openly gay, too-good-to-be true Southern hunk Danny Roberts.

It took a few more years for me to fully admit my thing for Danny to myself, and then to tell others. There were plenty of signs along the way. But Danny really made things pretty plain.

Ever wonder what the rest of these guys are up to? No, me neither (courtesy wikimedia commons)

That’s one of the huge reasons that I love TV so much. It’s how we tell stories about ourselves, and it’s how we try on other lives to see if they fit. We’re lucky – we live in a time when there are so many stories being told every day about how we can lead happy and healthy lives with honesty. If that means we’ve got to put up with season 2 of Bachelor Pad, well, it’s probably worth it.

So thank you to the Dannys of the world, both in front and behind the camera, who have truly made life just a little bit easier for all of us gays watching at home.

And if, like me, you’re frankly more fascinated by one specific Danny in front of the camera, then you’re probably just as psyched about the new about him that hit a couple months ago – Danny Roberts is filming an as-of-yet untitled project right now, and there are leaked shower make-out pics. We may not be around to share with you whatever this turns into, but it’s not too hard to imagine what my coverage of the show would be like: “Danny hot. Writing bad. Over it.”

It’s been a real pleasure counting myself as a TNGer this past year. Thanks to the fantastic group of dedicated people who made this blog a great place to share. More importantly, thanks to you! It’s humbling to think that so many smart people took the time to read what I wrote. If you want to stay in touch, feel free to drop me a line on Twitter (@TopherBurns).

I hope you had some fun, because I sure did. Bye for now!

PS – Did you know that Danny schilled for a gay soft core video series called Boy’s Briefs? Yowza!

Austin, TX garage rock band The Strange Boys have been kicking around the scene since 2008 and have released a record every year since 2009. The band may finally get national attention, as their third album Live Music is set for release on October 25th on their new label Rough Trade. Live Music is not a live album "Live" is in the present-tense, as in, rhymes with "give" and not "five" the press release state. What it is is fourteen immaculately recorded tracks that reduces the sonic fuzz from the band's shambolic previous recordings to revel the strain songwriting below. Lead single "Me and You" is not so much of a departure for the fuzz loving group but a chance to see the band in a clear light. The piano driven track was taken from the album's first side which was produced by Spoon drummer Jim Eno. The sound is unmistakably Eno with the piano sounding immaculate, though unlike Spoon there is no right/left speaker trickery.

New Jersey's Real Estate are closer to releasing their sophomore record (and first for Domino Records) Days on October 18th and to build the excitement they have released a new five minute jam from the album. "Green Aisles" is classic Real Estate with less fuzz then their previous work. The track is more laid back then former song of the day "It's Real," but it is just as awesome. Take a listen and download below.
