Dehli 2 Dublin – Canadian band gives head to your Lager beer. You will spill before the end of the 1st set tune. Dreamy, hot- hot Ravi Binning sings straight from his heart to your heart. His Indian eyebrows go wild for you and his voice is piercing like a teenage heart throb call. Don’t get too close to the stage or these guys will burn your pants down! They have maple syrup hearts pouring over us with, “This is an S.O.S. – we must stop the stress from East to West. One Heart, One Mind. Ohm Shanti Ohm”.  That may sound cheesy here but, they bring international genres together in the most harmonious uplifting ways and often singing in Punjabi.

Multiculturalism is no dream at a Dehli 2 Dublin show!  Their collision of musical scales from East to West convinces us we are all one and the same. From Canadian heritage Celtic folk to Bhangra , a little reggae to classical stringed solos all wrapped with a western ribbon of electronica/ Dub- they simply evaporate borders. DJ Tarun spins the tables and beats heavy on the intoxicating tabla drums. Andrew Kim is an Asian kilt wearing Irish jig dancing electric sitar player. The Klezmer, blues infused artist Jaron Freeman Fox does guest appearances, burning up his violin, turning it into a heavy metal fiddle, trashing on it while holding it above his head. He is Caucasian but, is relentless in Indian raga battling –which sounds like freestyle rapping on spiritual speed. He and Ravi go at it, a quarter way in to their show.

With the mix of Indians in the audience, the Bhangra dancing, the high energy dramatics on stage, this felt like a Bollywood movie set where no one was left out.

Formed in 1972, Black Uhuru is considered a leader in the wave of second generation reggae bands. They were the first reggae group to win a grammy (1985) and have broken trends playing alongside bands like The Clash, The Police and Rolling Stones. This is a huge feat when you consider that so many international genre’s simply stay confined to the “world music” section. Not to mention the decades of oppression it’s surpassed. Last week in San Francisco the Jamaican band headlined with current members Five Star General, Lion Lieutenant, Andrew Bees and original founding member Duckie Gong. There was also a woman who occasionally sang lead, dressed in a beautiful flowing gown of rasta colours.

They performed legendary songs like “What Is Life”, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” and “I love King Salassie”. Haile Salassie was Ethiopia’s Emperor in the early 1900′s and has remained a symbol of freedom and peace for the Rastafarian movement. His image has been a backdrop for many concerts throughout reggae history.

Given that reggae has mostly been synonymous with the political movement of Rasta- I’m always amazed at the cool easy going mellowness of the genre. The hypnotic drum and bass sounds, peaked with twittering dub keyboards and layered harmonious sing song melodies. The relentless messages for equality often sound like lullabies.

There is a spiritual aspect that goes along with rasta. You can see it in the dancing and hear it in the lyrics. Andrew Bees flailed his dreads, spinning around in trance as his musical comrades marched cooly on the spot, one dressed in a white uniform style jacket and dark shades. They looked strong and wise- like they carried stories the audience was very far removed from. I was in a crowd of mostly white urban hippies. Yet everyone was fully engaged with the rasta messages from this group called “Black Freedom”. “Uhuru ” is a Swahili word for “freedom”. This all seemed surreal in some sense but the music speaks for itself and the ideas of world unification and spiritualism can relate to anyone and I think that is largely why this music conquered on an international level. Some of the lyrics were related in the Jamaican sounding dialect and I was surprised to see a couple of white kids jumping up and down and reciting. I only wished I could join in.

I went to this show alone – alot of my friends have the impression that reggae is pigeon holed to a very specific crowd and sound. I think they might be right as reggae has been exploited by the consumerist sound as happens with any genre. But Black Uhuru brings us back to some of that originality that you simply can’t resist.

Secret Renegade Breaks Party in SF

The kids of the event crew called… (sorry- I’d be killed if I published that) are very strategic. Last Saturday night they collected 150 peeps from a “map point” and transported them to a secret mystery spot just outside the city on a cliff overlooking the beach. A map point is a designated meeting point where party goers can meet up to either be transported by a party bus or to simply receive the actual coordinates of a party location. It’s a tactic to ward off possibilities of underground parties thrown in illegal locations, of being shut down.

The event throwers were extremely sweet and swift in their covert operation. They swooped us up in shuttle cars, transported us down a highway along the coast and scuttled us out into pitch blackness. From there we were guided by hushed voices up many, many stairs. At the top, another welcoming voice guided us off to the side, down a path of dimly lit glow sticks plugged in the dirt, through some bushes, and finally to the entrance of a very large black curtain covering an entrance to some kind of bridge tunnel thing. It was the grandest entrance point I’d ever seen. People stopped in their tracks in wonderment of what may lay behind. The idea that some kids managed to cover up this enormous tunnel in the middle of nowhere was kinda overwhelmingly cool. Teeny tiny multi-coloured lights showered us as we entered through the curtain and a wall of trippy visuals splashed over the walls of the tunnel. Paths with ocean views lead to 2 different DJ areas- a chill out area and the Breakbeat party. A round of toasting cocktails were handed out and a girls voice took over the mic giving toast to their second anniversary party. I admit I was chemically influenced, but she really sounded like the leader of a peaceful Ewok village. I heard: “I am kind to keep you with me and too wise to let you go.” I dunno… that’s what my notes say.

The party went on lock down (all sound and lights shut off) only twice for about 10 min. when park rangers were spotted. It was a beautiful night with awesome music, ocean views and overall very intimate party vibe. It took ‘till 4am for the cops to officially shut us down, but even then DJ’s kept it going to the last beat as the cops walked around and tried to get everyone out.

This time around, Mission United joins forces with Hard French to curate the main stage! In addition, it features the headlining talents of Hard French DJs, Afrolicious live with percussionists, Lights Down Low DJs, and Tres Lingerie live with James Anthony amongst many others. The event will begin with a pop-up Mission fashion boutique and installation featuring a bevy of neighborhood shops and designers.
