Conjuring up a vivid multi-polar world, this colorful exhibit offers an eye-popping study of the terrain at the periphery of USA and Mexico.Opening on September 26, 2010, Borderlandia: Cultural Topography by Einar and Jamex de la Torre offers an eye-popping study of the terrain at the periphery of USA and Mexico. Conjuring up a vivid multi-polar world, the brothers create large-scale glass sculptures loaded with geopolitics and wit. Informed by their own cross-cultural encounters, the brother’s works are a visual and intellectual hybrid. Realized through the brothers’ collaboration, Borderlandia presents a fearless depiction of life and art on the fringe. Vivid imagery presented in a satirical and engaging manner boldly tackles issues of cultural duality and the melting pot of Southern California.

Each sculpture is an explosive synthesis of the varied cultural influences, mythologies and relics of ancient Latin America, as well as, the artifacts of the contemporary consumer arena. This collaborative body of work consists of both freestanding, pedestal, and wall mounted pieces comprised of masterful blown glass elements, depicting various Mayan, Aztec, and religious iconography, juxtaposed with historic icons and scores of trinkets scoured from dollar stores around the world.

All right LA weekenders, this week its about mixed art and new styles. This week is heavier on the museum side than compared to other weekend previews but they all coincided fantastically to not only offer art but music, science, details, oceans, curves and color. Art on the Street at the MOCA this weekend showcases the first exhibit where graffiti and street art is considered high art. Looks like now-a-days, graffiti artists are gaining street and art credibility as Banksy and Fab 5 Freddy are now synonymous with contemporary art. All the Sordid Little Details at the WWA gallery shows a unique exhibit showcasing the talents of 6 artists and their detailed works of art. From color, brush strokes and composition, everything is painstakingly remarkable. And lastly, the Hyperbolic exhibit at the Williamson Gallery meshes art with the natural world in some pretty interesting ways. Have a great Weekend.... oh and Happy Father's Day. Bring Dad along for this weekend's adventures. Have a great Weekend!

The first comprehensive U.S. museum survey exhibition of graffiti and street art features installations by 50 of the most dynamic artists from the graffiti and street art community, including Fab 5 Freddy (New York), Lee Quiñones (New York), Futura (New York), Margaret Kilgallen (San Francisco), Swoon (New York), Shepard Fairey (Los Angeles), Os Gemeos (São Paulo), and JR (Paris). For those like me who art art freaks but does not ahve a lick of talent or stay within the lines will appreciate this exhibit at the MOCA.

The exhibition will feature paintings, mixed media sculptures, and interactive installations by 50 of the most dynamic artists and will emphasize Los Angeles’s role in the evolution of graffiti and street art, with special sections dedicated to seminal local movements such as cholo graffiti and Dogtown skateboard culture.
All the Sordid Little Details at the WWA Gallery

Get lost in the details of six incredible artists’ work this May 13th at the WWA gallery with the Industrial Squid curated All the Sordid Little Details. Contributing artists David Ball, Dan Barry, William Buzzell, Ken Garduno, Jesse Hotchkiss, and Jacob Livengood all craft meticulously detailed artwork that, due the painstaking methods and techniques used, allows for an insight into the hearts and minds of the artists themselves.

A collection of paintings, ink drawings and mixed media collages, All the Sordid Little Details will feature a variety of works, styles and themes all tied together by the intricate nature of the works. All six of these artists are driven by a compulsive need, not simply to create, but to create works that require an extensive amount of time and an extraordinary attention to detail in their completion.

Details: 9517 Culver Blvd Culver City. 11am-5pm. FREE. All Ages.

Hyperbolic at the Alyce De Roulet Williamson Gallery

Marvel at a carefully curated collection of art, plastic trash, crochet sculpture, mathematics, and our planet’s oceans — and discover why they’re all connected. The art enthusiast and the science geek converge into a phantasmic experience at the Alyce de Roulet Williamson Gallery in Pasadena. Through crochet, the exhibit synthesizes sculptural form and mathematical complexity by inserting contemporary manipulations into the traditional craft of crochet. The extraordinary product of that process is a representation of coral reef structures that are tantalizingly beautiful yet provocatively challenging in their commentary about oceanic health.

An apt description of design is innovation at the intersection of art and science. Social responsibility and ecological consciousness are central themes in today’s world, and they compel us to integrate science into any design equation. The creative exhibit will make this Sunday afternoon worthwhile for the crafter and the techy-science geek in us.

Details:1700 Lida St. , Pasadena , CA. 12pm-9pm. FREE All Ages.

York Chang, in conjunction with Fernando Sanchez, investigates the history of the Artist Actualization Services, a short-lived and controversial performance art group active in Los Angeles from 1979-1980.

Through the pages of the seminal performance art magazine High Performance, the Artist Actualization Services created multiple undetected reports of their actions, successfully attributed to other artists. This exhibition presents this history with an installation of archival documents, photographs, video and a newly-published issue of High Performance, which seeks to correct errors generated in past issues by the actions of the Artist Actualization Services.

In 2009 we launched our three-year vision, PRIDE 365: Power Passion Purpose, transitioning from an annual theme to a more focused community-driven three-year vision.

PRIDE 365 represents the community’s collective spirit in carrying LGBT pride throughout all that we do every day of the year. We experience the Power of a united people who march proudly into the streets and assemble by the hundreds of thousands in Pride gatherings around the world. Passion expresses the dedication for the humanitarian values our movement represents. We have Passion for a better and more equal inclusion in the community at large. And we have a clear Purpose to achieve the equality guaranteed for all Americans in our country’s constitution for all Americans.

“The idea of PRIDE 365 embodies a self-appreciation of ourselves and our community. PRIDE is something we carry within our hearts, words and actions every day,” said Rodney Scott, Christopher Street West Board President.

Some of the stand out attractions, entartainement and honorees at this year’s pride include the NOH8 photo shoot, Estelle, Mya, Macy Gray and Sam Sparro (List of artists here) and grand Marshall Johnny Weir.
This past weekend was the famous kick off to the Tim Burton Exhibit at the LACMA. On Sunday, the exhibition opened to the public. Toddlers, children, teens, parents, grandparents, friends, Burton fans, LACMA fans, artists, curiosity-seekers, and the like wandered through the whimsical world of Tim Burton. The exhibit itself has moved from the Metropolitan Museum in Modern Art in New York City and finally makes a stop in the la la land. Any Tim Burton buffs out there? This is the creme de la creme of events to attend with guided tours, exhibits, rare sketches never released and story board ideas to movies that will get the nerd juices flowing. For the experience seeker in you, his exhibition brings together over 700 drawings, paintings, photographs, moving-image works, storyboards, puppets, concept artworks, maquettes, costumes, and cinematic ephemera, including art from a number of unrealized and little-known personal projects. Many of these objects come from the artist’s own archive, as well as from studio archives and private collections of Burton’s collaborators. This will be a stand out temporary exhibit at the LACMA for a while but tickets are being sold as fast as they become available so snag a couple for your or your friends!

Performances by Detox Icunt, Disco Dolly, Edward Vigletti, and Glitz Glam!!!

We’ll plan to move on to Luke and Lenora’s Mr Black (LA) after!!

Please note — There will be a book signing of the exclusive edition for BookMarc from 6-8pm with a separate invite to follow as well.
——————————————————–

Jeremy Kost is a photographer and video artist best known for his provocative Polaroids. He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, and currently lives and works in New York, NY. In 2011, his work will have solo exhibits at The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; Conner Contemporary Art, Washington, DC; and Galerie Nuke, Paris. The National Arts Club, New York; Show Studio Gallery, London; Kunstagenten Gallery, Berlin; and The Armory Show are amongst many other galleries and exhibitions to have featured his work in group shows. The publisher powerHouse Books recently released It’s Always Darkest Before Dawn, the artist’s first limited edition monograph in collaboration with BookMarc, featuring both portraits and perspective-bending Polaroid collages. He was recently commissioned by Stella McCartney for her Spring 2011 collection.

Kost’s photography and video work document how gender and sexuality play out in thriving subcultures and provide an unfiltered, honest look at his subjects, whether they’re flamboyant drag queens in Pittsburgh or buff boys in the Californian desert.

The films screened here examine gender as an element of character transformation. Rainblo takes an in-depth look at a metamorphosis into drag, in which makeup becomes a tool of artifice and magic, a way to be reborn as an entirely new character. In Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Ericka-Toure Aviance cuts a path through Harlem as onlookers stare, take cell phone photos and marvel at the strange and elegant creature disrupting their neighborhood routines. Similarly, in What You Need is the Limo, a ‘celebrity’ exits an SUV, flanked by security guards. She walks and shops in midtown Manhattan, face concealed with a wig and hat and eyes directed downward as tourists follow the group, asking one another who she is.

Club Underground at the Echo

Underground is at it again with another exciting BritPopIndiElectroPop Dance Party. The hipster-tastic event is great alternative to the big warehouse dance scenes that dot LA and the has some of the best DJs than any ultra lounge in Santa Monica. With Live Performances by Gangi and Barron Von Luxxury, the sweet sounds of 60s Brit punk and and electro punk is still alive in LA.
Family Album By Jennie Cotterill at the Phone Booth Gallery

Phone Booth Gallery is known for featuring some pretty unique, edgy and avant-garde talent over the past few exhibitions and their most recent exhibition now includes the works of Jennie Cotterill. Cotterill’s endearing mixed media montages textured with personal history puts heartfelt sentimentalism on a collision course with contradictory family life. her exhibition titled “Family Life” offers a nostalgic look at family album, portraits and pictures with a hidden air of grotesque and that offers a creepy yet enchanting look at family portraits. Fading colors, burned black edges, soft blurred images of grandma and grandpa or the awkward forced poses at baseball practice will attract visually and is a definite reason to go and check out this event.

Details: 2533 East Broadway, Long Beach, CA, All Ages, FREE

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Defiant Chronicles at the Collaborative in the Museum of Latin American Art

This exhibition, co-curated by MOLAA Curator Idurre Alonso and Slanguage Founders Mario Ybarra Jr. and Karla Diaz, focuses on representing current strategies for artistic production derived and influenced by urban and street art including graffiti, stencil and stickers. This exciting exhibition focuses on representing current strategies for artistic production related and influenced by urban art. For the urban street art junkie and the Banksy-esque fans out in the LA Area, this exhibit will surely interest you in how urban art redefines the traditional approach to street art/graffiti as a practice that is meant to be singled-out from its place and context, exclusive to an insider audience. It breaks the conception of urban art as a male dominated art form that rarely addresses gender issues on its content.

Details: 421 W. Broadway Ave, Long Beach, CA, All Ages, $9, 11am-5pm

Well, Pride is here once again and as one of the first few kick off cities in America, Long Beach Gay Pride is one of the biggest and one of the oldest in the country. The two-day event, with its draw of some 80,000 participants and 200 floats in its parade, has become one of the largest Gay Pride celebrations in America. In other words, GLBT Pride in Long Beach is one of the biggies, and it’s a terrific time to acquaint yourself with a gay-friendly that city that, frankly, doesn’t get as much press as it deserves. This year, trans area makes its awaited debut at festival. Over the years trans awareness at even the biggest pride festivals have often been overlooked and ignored and this year they make their appearance once again bringing ever more consciousness to the festivities,

A Plus D and DJ Paul V. present LA’s original mashup bootleg dance party, spinning only the finest bootlegs and bastard pop. With some of the most creative mixes to the most unlikely of pairings of artists, sounds, and genres of music, the end result is an audio sensation and burst of imagination that dares to be different and like nothing you have ever heard before. A powerhouse of entertainment by R.A.I.D at midnight and fantastic energy from the DJ and the crowds, this echoplex mainstay remains of the best — and I think only — mash up club in the whole of LA. Have fun. Shake your bootie and get your mash up on this Saturday at Bootie LA.

Well, of course, she drove you to therapy, but at least she never asked you to bring her an ax. Can’t celebrate Mother’s day without Joan Crawford in Mommy Dearest. What better way to honor the lady whose loins you spewed from than by accompanying her to a screening of Mommie Dearest, starring Faye Dunaway as the infamous, wire-hanger-hatin’ Joan Crawford, the mother of all crazy movie moms?

Thanks to Dunaway’s overarched brows, pursed lips and ham acting— not to mention countless drag queen tributes— the 1981 film, based on daughter Christina Crawford’s 1978 memoir, has been a camp classic for exactly 30 years. The folks in San Francisco are even staging a prescreening drag show called Trannie Dearest, but you can still do it right down here. Just bring said wire hanger and Ajax and let the repressed memories rip. It’s cheaper than psychoanalysis.

Be sure to check out showtimes and theaters officially sponsored by the Newport Film Festival. Also going this weekend is a marvelous art gallery showing in Long Beach featuring work by Rod Luff and end your week partying with the part time punks post pop indie punk night (Say that three times!). Enjoy your weekend!

Friday, April 29, 2011

The Newport Film Festival

The 12th Annual film Newport Film Festival returns to the seaside town with a series of film screenings and galas. The festival brings contemporary filmaking to the Orange County and this year they boast more than 350 films from 45 countries as well as over 100 film short spanning traditional shorts, spanning from drama and romance to the not-so-traditional genres such as ” Age is Just a Short Number” and “Coping with Your Shorts.” Of the many worthy titles that will titilate the most curious minds, Beyond Gay: The Poltics of Pride (Canada), Hand Held (Romania) and Miss Representation (USA) will be stand out selections geared towards a queer audience. Beyond Gay, a documentary about a man, a parade and the global fight for human rights, the globe trotting	adventures of Big Gay Ken, who has been traveling the world getting the inside scoop on the state of Pride Celebrations & Protests everywhere. From the world’s largest event of over 3 million in Sao Paulo to the very clandestine Moscow march, Ken has seen it all before throwing Vancouver’s 30th Pride celebration in August, 2008. Hand Held is produced from Legendary producer Don Hahn comes this compelling documentary that examines the incredible photographs or Mike Carrol and heart wrenching stories of the pediatric AIDS epidemic in Romanian Orphanages. Lastly, Miss Representation is a Sundance selection which exposes how mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America and challenges media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women.

Among the other noteworthy mentions are two buzzing films Conception and PressPausePlay-Democratized Culture. Conception, a romantic comedy which follows nine couples on the night they conceive, debunking the myths most us were told as children about where babies come from and showing there are many ways to make a loving family. PressPausePlay Democratized Culture (Sweden) is a global journey that captures how digital technology has transformed the concept of art and culture, decoratizing tools that were once in the hands of few now made plenty and accessible to the masses. Come check out the Newport Film Festival and see for yourself. Prices and time varies so make sure to check your schedules.

Phone Booth Gallery is pleased to present the U.S. solo debut of prolific Australian artist Rod Luff. The exhibition, Luff’s first at the gallery, consists of contemplative body of soft-edged paintings and drawings that explore harmony, both as a general sensation and an intimate experience. Luff’s sensibility, which evokes pre-Raphaelite lyricism and surrealist-worthy caprice, combines an immense respect for human imagination with a fascination with the organic. Visually stunning and metaphorically meaningfull, Anima is a great event for the art lover in you.

West Theater, Parks and Recreation’s Adam Scott will be guest hosting poking fun at almost famous celebrities and their surrounding lives. A one-day comic book convention in Long Beach will gather those who simply do not want to be outside during the Easter picnics. Lastly, the legendary NoBunny will be playing at the Echo. Hopefully, you can look back at this weekend and say, ” Remember that Easter?”

Like to poke fun at celebrities? While you probably should leave Ed Begley Jr. alone when you see him at the Studio City Post Office (Really, Ed? Every day?), you can see an actual big-shot playing celebrity assistant at IO West’s Celebrity. In “loosey-goosey” fashion, according to cast member Brian Gattas, a celebrity host — this week it’s Parks & Recreation’s Adam Scott — plays assistant to a fake celebrity created by a suggestion from the audience. Past good sports have included 30 Rock’s Elizabeth Banks, Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet and the cast of The Office. Making the whole thing work are top improvisers Betty Cahill, Mike Coleman, Jeff Drake, Wendy Molyneux, Dana Powell , Adrian Wenner and Ethan Sandler.

Not quite sure if this sounds incredibly funny or incredibly stupid but what we have here is exactly what it sounds like.Young women taking off their clothes and reading before a live audience. The women — Scarlett Letter, Angelita Purrvertina, Miss Josie Bunnie, and La Fille Damnee — normally work as burlesque dancers. This time around they’ll be reading from detective stories, men’s magazines, trashy novels and sleazy sex paperbacks. And for kicks, three is a free wine reception after the show. Its still a pretty win-win situation.

Mondo Celluloid Presents Wild At Heart at the Long Beach Art Theater

Mondo Celluloid’s month long tribute to to David Lynch concludes with 1990′s WILD AT HEART! In 1990, an international Jury of cinema legends – which included three representatives from France, and was presided by Italian master Bernardo Bertolucci – crowed David Lynch’s Wild at Heart with the prestigious Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or. The buzz was instant: how did this violent, sexually charged, and surreal road trip – essentially a twisted and intoxicating mix of Breathless, The Wizard of Oz, and A Streetcar Named Desire – beat films by such luminaries as Clint Eastwood, Jean-Luc Godard, Ken Loach, Yimou Zhang, and that year’s film to beat, Jean-Paul Rappeneau’s Cyrano de Bergerac?

Lynch brings author Barry Gifford’s novel to life in one of the most hyper-kinetic, colorful, and ultra-violent films of the 1990′s, a kaleidoscope of lipstick, fire, blood, bad teeth, and one particularly existential snake-skin jacket. Arguably boasting career-best performances by Laura Dern, Nicolas Cage, and Diane Ladd in a stand-out role that would earn her an Academy Award nomination, Wild at Heart is a modern masterpiece that divided critics at first, but has since been embraced as the utterly unique work of art that it is. Though the same can be said about virtually any Lynch film, you have definitely never seen anything quite like this movie.

Details:

Art Theater, Long Beach 2025 E. 4th Street. Long Beach, CA.

$10, +21. 11:55 p.m. Midnight Showing. Free Parking if you Arrive Early.

The Aussie BBQ at the Echo

THE AUSSIE BBQ made famous over the years as one of the biggest parties in Austin Texas during the South By South West (SxSW) music convention will be taking place in New York on Sunday 13th March 2011 at the prestigious Bowery Ballroom and in Los Angeles at the Echo on Saturday 26th March 2011.

This is the third year that the Aussie BBQ has come to New York and Los Angeles, and the biggest line up yet.

There are four Aussie BBQ events taking place across the USA and Canada in March 2011. Each show will feature a selection of Australia’s most exquisite contemporary musical acts as well as a catered barbecue. Saturday 12th March at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto (Canadian Music Week); Sunday 13th March at the Bowery Ballroom in New York; Saturday 19th March at Maggie Maes (SxSW, Austin) and on Saturday 26th March at the Echo in Los Angeles.

Australia may be known as the Lucky Country but our resolve has been tested recently with floods, cyclones and bush fires. In times like these we need something to look forward to and the prospect of new Australian music breaking overseas lifts the spirit.

Performing at the Los Angeles Aussie BBQ on Saturday 26th are Maniac, Andy Clockwise, Dan Brodie & the Grieving Widows, Grand Atlantic, the Level Spirits, the Boat People, Wagons, “Dogs”, Dash & Will, Novocaines, Hungry Kids of Hungary and Sampology.

These tremendous line ups would sell out festivals across Australia.

Reminisce about the good old days when kids television program actually had cartoons and not dominated with teeny boppers, Disney clones and do-as-i-say command TV shows and check out the cool International Children’s Festival. The Nick Family Fun Day would be a great turn out for those who grew up on Nick JR and Nickelodeon as our favorite kids programming has now reached the annals of history and into the popular conscious of high Children’s Film

The 6th annual REDCAT International Children’s Film Festival rolls out the red carpet for a mind-expanding collection of short film programs, each crafted with care to appeal to the next generation of movie-lovers. Inspiring, magical works made by acclaimed filmmakers and up-and-coming auteurs alike take you on a celluloid ride around the globe, with enchanting programs for tiny tots, chills and thrills for adventurous older viewers, and films sure to inspire the whole family.

Lost Highway at the Long Beach Art Theater

Ling Beach’s one and only indie art theater will be premiering their midnight showing of Lost Highway this Friday. This month they are featuring the David Lynch neo-noir classic mind-bending assault on the senses, alternately moody and hyperkinetic, a psychological horror film boasting stunning cinematography and an innovative, masterful sound-scape of Kubrickian detail, at times almost unbearable in both its moments of ominous silence and sudden blaring terror. A work of art where plot, while integral, is secondary to mood and atmosphere, Lost Highway was recently voted #22 in Entertainment Weekly’s list of the “25 Top Scary Films of All Time,” and has endured as a much-examined – and much-debated – cult classic. Do yourselves a favor and check this movie out in theaters, somehow DVD or VHS, dare I say, just does not do this movie justice. if this sounds awesome to you, head your way to Long Beach and get there early to find free parking along the street.

Details:

Long Beach Art Theater. 2025 E. 4th Street. Long Beach CA, $10,11:55pm. FREE parking if you arrive early enough.

Running in tandem with the Cannes film festival, the LACMA has put together a Critics Week Panel of films displayed by the French Union of Films. A 6 part series, all of which made their debut at the Semaine, they are a hodge podge of films hailing from nearly every continent representing a distinct essence of the Semaine’s exquisite French taste and style. This is a rare showing in many regards because it was made possible by the assitance of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the French Film and TV office. So if you have the chance, go and check this event out.

The Cave Singers is an American folk trio from Seattle, Washington. Reminiscent of a more earnest Will Oldham, a tempered Animal Collective, or a whimsical Mountain Goats, their music is sparse yet harmonious.
Rising from the ashes of Pretty Girls Make Graves after its disbandment in 2007, former PGMG-member Derek Fudesco teamed up with Pete Quirk (of Hint Hint) and Marty Lund (of Cobra High) and began playing in the Seattle area. Soon after the band’s conception, The Cave Singers signed with Matador Records on June 11, 2007.
They will be playing their folk rock sounds at the Autry this Sunday and the event is great for all ages.

The Gypsy camp migrates to the Beach for a cooler beach feel. Lastly the Long Beach Mardi Gras will bring the animal in anyone. Make sure to get a King’s Cake and maybe you can find the Mardi Gras baby to wish you good luck! Have a great weekend!

Friday, March 4, 2011

SheRAW: Hanky Code Party at Que Sera in Long Beach

The queerest dance party in Long Beach is this Friday at Que Sera. Sponsored by the AMP Organization, a Long Beach Organization aimed to promote LGBTQQIA community culture while highlighting queer visibility brings you the Hanky Code Theme Party. Back in the day, gay bar culture was quite different than it is today. Long are the days when men gave you the look and you understood what that meant and the days of wearing a colored hanky in either your left or right pocket determined what you pleasure was in the bed. Don’t be scared to cast your side long glances and finally say hi to someone at a bar when you revisit those days of coded queer bar culture at SheRAW in Long Beach. Forget the mainstream gay LA hot spots like Rage and Tiger Heat. Flag up and head down to Long Beach and get you coded misconduct on!

Details: SheRAW at QUE SERA: 1923 E 7th Street Long Beach CA 90813. 9pm, +21, $5, admission and the proceeds go to supporting AMP Organization.

UnderGround featuring Sweater Girls + Neverever

This week Underground LA is continuing their 10 year anniversary with two of thier favorite girl-fronted pop bands from Los Angeles! Sweater Girls and Neverever are a staple at Underground bringing fem-rock, butch fem and sweater fem at their best.

Sweater Girls are from sunny Los Angeles, but they are dreaming of England and praying for rain. These sweet shoulder-shrug songs may tread a well-worn path of jangle guitars and wistful vocals, but there’s a unique sadness in their 60’s-sounding pop.

Neverever is comprised of Jihae and Wallace Meek are a couple with a keen ear for POP who’ve travelled the world together in search of the perfect tune. Having met in Glasgow while Ms. Meek was the singer for pop phenoms The Royal We and Mr. Meek helmed the excellent Bricolage, they eventually relocated to LA to soak in the sunny vibes and pop history. Surrounded by stacks of dusty 45s, crack musicians and dinette counters lined with hopefuls and has-beens, they set about on the next stage in their musical journey. Neverever is their new band, a tough group with a flair for echoey three minute symphonies, marrying classic pop melodies with punk-informed crunch and glam-infused 70s stomp.

Details: Underground LA at the Echo.1822 w. Sunset Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA. 9pm, $10.

LACMA Young Directors Night

For the tenth year in a row, Muse will highlight the emerging talent of Los Angeles’ film community in our popular Young Directors Night. A celebration of film and the art of cinema, the showcase features six short films screened in the unique setting of an art museum, and a Q&A with the directors.

The exhibition doubles as a competition, with the host panel along with the audience voting on best in show. The winner, announced at a reception following the screening, takes home the Art of Film Award and is rewarded a prize designed to further advance in their medium

Details: LACMA. $30 General Admission. 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles 90036,8pm.

Gypsy Camp present What the Folk!? at Puka Bar in Long Beach

The Gypsy Camp is a growing collective of artists, musicians and appreciators of folk and alternative folk music, DIY art and lifestyle and community building. The goal of these events is to create a microcosm that promotes creative expression, to perform and experience live music in a whole new way and to facilitate connectivity between conscious and like-minded artists and new audiences. We want to not only provide a magical experience for all involved, but also to inspire people to create and contribute toward manifesting visions of a better community and world through the connective power of art and music. This weekend, they step outside the bastion of the the San Fernando Valley and make their way to the beach. Come check out the poetry, folk art and music and experience the gypsy camp community!

Details: Gypsy Camp at the Long Beach Puke Bar. 710 W. Willow St. Long Beach. 12pm-2am

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Long Beach Mardi Gras Parade beginning at the Long Beach Aquarium.

Its that time of the year. The famed Gulf Coast Celebration makes it way to the West coast and the Party starts at the Long Beach Aquarium.

Mardi Gras is nothing if not a celebration of the arts – music, dancing, costumes, food, etc… Heck, one could easily consider the social gathering of diverse individuals around the common theme of having a good time art unto itself!

As part of our vision to create a community festival that celebrates local artists, and not those just performing, we our proud to present the inaugural Mardi Gras Artist Village – a collection of local artists displays. Several Long Beach artists will be displaying their works in paint, metal, mosaic, ceramics, videography and photography.

The event is being curated by Timothy Dunham of Some Things Creative, whose portable art walks have been featured at the “Third Thursday’s Art Walk” in Shoreline Village and at Friends of Colorado Lagoon events.
