The Art Car parade is this weekend in Houston! Bring your camera and sunscreen!

Last year, while driving home from work, I encountered a Rooster on wheels. Not sure what to do, I quickly snapped a picture with my antiquated cell phone camera. I figured there had been a spill at the toxic waste plant in Greenspoint. Or perhaps the Rooster had been an escapee from the Wabash Feed Store on Washington. No, it was neither of those things. Turns out, I had simply encountered an art car. I see these things driving around Houston from time to time. Each time I tell myself I need to quit drinking. Fortunately I have good friends to remind me that my sightings aren’t the result of some kind of brain malignancy, but rather a normal side effect of living in the great city of Houston. The Art Car Parade is this weekend – hosted by Ray Stantz er, Dan Aykroyd!

Friday

Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the Palestinian segregation wall in the West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. Exit Through the Gift Shop is the story of how an eccentric French shop keeper and amateur film maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner with spectacular results. Screening at the River Oaks Theater. Call (713) 866-8881 for show times. — 2009 W. Gray

Improv theater always has something to offer. In the case of Uncivil Unions, the audience plays an active role in the performance. If not by directly interacting, by taking away part of the debate on same-sex marriage. Uncivil Unions, a community-based theatre project in response to the national debate on same-sex marriage involves a team of Unhinged Artist exploring our community’s feelings, attitudes, and hopes about status, relationships and civil rights. — Freneticore Theater | 8pm | 5102 Navigation | $15-20

Saturday

Come see the Art Car Parade this Saturday starting at 1pm along Allen Parkway. Featuring a random collection of funky and freaky cars, always decorated unpredictably – think of it as Houston’s rated-G Burning Man. Minus the drugs, nudity, and heat stroke. Hosted by celebrity emcee Dan Aykroyd. — Allen Parkway @ Taft | 1pm | Free!

Rescued from obscurity by a wonderful little website called Chatroulette, Ben Folds entertained us with his improvised piano interactions with random internet folks. Master piano player Folds is without his “five” this time around but the performance is bound to be amazing. No word on whether he’ll be Chatrouletting or not. — House of Blues | 1204 Caroline | 7pm

Sunday

Don’t forget Mom!!!

After Mother’s Day dinner, drop by Guava Lamp for Sunday night Karaoke. If you were there last week you saw me drunkenly slaughter two Duran Duran songs and sing a duet version of Oh My God You Guys from Legally Blonde the musical. It’s always a hoot. Starts at 10pm — Guava Lamp | 570 Waugh | No Cover

The mysterious holiday that is 4/20 took place this past week. Why do I say mysterious? Well, for many adult Americans, the day is like any other: Go to work, punch in, punch out, go home, watch Richard Dawson-era Family Feud on GSN, go to bed (Everyone does that, right?). For those who celebrate 4/20, the routine is similar, but add to that a special moment where they get stoned out of their mind and pay homage to a date that, according to Wikipedia, has more to do with school letting out than a police code. I do not partake, unfortunately, so I can’t relate. However, I do enjoy a Red Stripe and some reggae music. For that reason I write about the International Festival this weekend. Not only will there be tons of dreads and jerk chicken, there are bound to be some 4/20 holdovers as well. Speaking of, did you know there is a stage production of Reefer Madness showing this weekend? Yep. I think I see a theme. *Cough, cough* Enjoy!

Friday

As part of the celebration of Mexico’s Bicentennial, Discovery Green and the Consulate General of Mexico, with the support of Bank of America, will present Murals Under The Stars by Gregorio Luke. This is a multimedia presentation in which life size images of the murals of Los Tres Grandes: Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, plus Rufino Tamayo, will be screened, using the most advanced digital technology. The presentation will be held outdoors providing the viewers with real life sensations as if being in front of the original murals. — Discovery Green | 1500 McKinney | 8pm | Free

Saturday

Inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name, this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-
in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a
hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence. You won’t be able to resist
the spoofy fun of Reefer Madness. The addictive and clever musical numbers range from big
Broadway-style showstoppers to swing tunes. This dynamic show will go straight to your head! Reefer Madness is a highly stylized and satirical political commentary. — Theater LaB Houston | 1706 Alamo | 8pm | $30

Sunday

Come see the International Fest – this year spotlighting the Caribbean. Enjoy live music, international food delights, and merchandise. Kid friendly but please no pets. Located across from City Hall at the intersection of McKinney and Bagby. Gates open at noon. $17 at the door. See www.ifest.org for more information.

Owl City, Mo'Nique, and free Local H - all this weekend in H-Town

Owl City - Adam Young

First my apologies, dear readers, for no Houston Weekend Preview last weekend. Law school finals are upon me and coupled with drama at work, there hasn’t been much time for anything fun lately. This weekend promises to be a soggy one so our coverage of events is limited to things indoors. I chose a random sampling of madness to highlight and I promise, as always, there is a method to my madness. Friday we start with a man and his Mac. Saturday, a woman and her Big Mac. And Sunday, two guys and a sack. Sounded good when I first came up with it. Now I’m not so sure.

Friday

The one man (Adam Young) band that is Owl City is coming to the Bayou City for a little electronic showdown with a critical audience. Owl City enjoyed some surprise popularity this past Fall with the hit Fireflies, but the more I hear that song, the more I want to know what we were thinking. Hype over the track has pretty much fizzled. The highly-processed vocals incorporated therein really make me wonder, “What’s this gonna sound like live?” – If you want to find out, check out Owl City tonight. — Verizon Wireless Theater | 520 Texas

Saturday

Ever since winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, comedienne Mo’Nique has been a force to be reckoned with. One of the most important things you can do as a comedian is relate with your audience. As a performer who usually comments on real life in her act, one can only wonder what effect being an Oscar-winner will have on her ability to relate. Dramatic roles aside, though, Mo’Nique is one funny woman. Fo’shizzle. — Reliant Arena | 8400 Kirby | $39

Sunday

If you really want a treat, make the trek down to Clear Lake to see Local H. The rock duo formed in the late 80s saw modest success in the 1990s with a few tracks you’d almost certainly remember (Bound For The Floor, All The Kids Were Right). These two guys are trying something novel tonight: Not only is their concert free, but an audience member will randomly select an album for them to play in its entirety. A trick that’s sure to make the crowd sizzle. (That’s all I got) — Scout Bar Clear Lake | 18307 Egret Bay Blvd. | Free!

Check out the 31st Annual Bunnies on the Bayou celebration this weekend in Houston.

Why do you taunt me, oh Reese's Peanut Butter Egg?

Well it’s finally here: Easter Weekend. It’s always a relief when Easter finally rolls around. Why? Because I’ll no longer be able to justify the consumption of Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs. I’ve probably eaten my way through 50 of those things in the past month. Being the non-religious person that I am, I feel I must do something to join in the Easter celebration. While some people dye eggs or dress up in their Sunday best, I choose to celebrate with hyperglycemia. So, while I’d love to make an appearance at Bunnies on The Bayou 31, I’ll probably just be on an insulin drip at Ben Taub. Here’s a look at a few events in Houston this weekend that are much less likely to make you fat.

Friday

Head on over to Boondocks and see GRRRL Parts perform a Trashed – a DJ event that takes place every 1st Friday of the month. Gab-E & Natasha Ninjason comprise the DJ duo of GRRRL Parts. These two formed in July of 2008 and have since been happily helping in keeping the Electro lovers dance scene alive and well in Houston. In this seemingly short time span, they have thrown and been a part of many Electro bumpin parties and have proudly opened for many renowned DJs. — Boondocks | 1417 Westheimer | $3-$7 | 10pm | 18+

Saturday

Join Air Alliance Houston, formerly Galveston-Houston Association for Smog Prevention (GHASP) and Mothers for Clean Air (MfCA), as we celebrate the 2nd Annual Earth Day Houston Festival, 5K & Green Expo. Earth Day Houston once again will take place at Discovery Green on Saturday, April 3, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The festivities kick off with the Earth Day Houston 5K at 8 a.m. followed by a day-long celebration with family entertainment, environmental education, the NEW Green Expo and much more. — Discovery Green | 1002 Avenida de las Americas | Free

Sunday

The 31st Annual Bunnies on The Bayou celebration is this Sunday starting at 1pm. This annual fundraiser generates proceeds for numerous Houston-area charities. For those have not been to Bunnies before, imagine 80% of the entire un-closeted gay population in Houston walking around a small park with a beer in hand: That’s Bunnies. — Fish Plaza (hehe) | 500 Texas Ave. | $30 at the gate | 21+

After Bunnies, head on over to Guava Lamp for more cocktails and, later, Sunday Karaoke with Toddicus. — 570 Waugh | No Cover

From Bunnies on the Bayou‘s site:

On a sunny Easter Sunday in 1979, a small party among friends gathered at an apartment complex on Clay Street. The word spread of the event, and the following year they set up a sound system outdoors and sent out invitations. By the mid-1980′s, AIDS was taking a terrible toll and the party hosts decided to help their friends by charging an “admission” – a bag of food.

By the early 1990′s the party attendance had grown so large that the hosts decided to move to the new outdoor plaza at the Wortham Center downtown on Buffalo Bayou; Bunnies on the Bayou was born. Rather than food, the Bunnies began to raise money for local charities. Since that time, the event has grown to be Houston’s largest annual outdoor cocktail party. Thousands of Houstonians have celebrated Easter with their friends, made new friends, and donated almost $550,000 to area charities.

Art, trannies, theater, and Chewbacca. Just a routine weekend in Houston.

Hey, at least he's not her brother!

When I was first told about this weekend’s Comicpalooza I thought, “Great! I love comedians! Should be fun.” Imagine my dismay when I discovered they were talking about comic books. Ughhhhhhhhhhh. Another convention center filled with pimply, awkward 30-somethings in storm trooper outfits. But wait, what’s this? Chewbacca is going to be there? Admittedly not as exciting as a Boba Fett appearance, but significant nonetheless! Now if only Carrie Fisher would show up, drunk, sloshing a Cosmo in full Princess Leia garb – they might sell the thing out. Geek out this Sunday, but leave your lightsaber at home on Friday and Saturday. Here are a few goings on this weekend in Houston:

Friday

The New Century is a provocative and outrageous comedy with heart. It consists of 4 sections: the first PRIDE AND JOY, is a monologue given by Helene, a Long Island matron, the self proclaimed “most loving mother of all time to her three gay children, followed by MR. CHARLES CURRENTLY OF PALM BEACH, about an aging homosexual who is hounded out of New York by younger gay men, who finds his theatrical style a threatening throw back to an earlier, tougher time. Mr. Charles retreats to Palm Beach where he stars in his own cable show titled “Too Gay”. The 3rd piece is CRAFTY, about Barbara Ellen, a Midwestern craftswomen who has lost a son to AIDS (sounds grim but is warm and humorous). The final section, THE NEW CENTURY, all the characters from the first 3 sections collide at a New Your City hospital, under surprising and comical circumstances, providing evidence of just where our our new century might be headed. — Theatre New West | 5570 Weslayan | $15-$60 | 713.522.2204

Saturday

One of the biggest art festivals in Houston takes place this weekend at Memorial Park. See the works of over 300 different artists at the Bayou City Art Festival Saturday and Sunday starting at 10am. From sculpture to photography and surrealist paintings, you can find it all at the festival. There is no parking at Memorial Park so see the website for shuttle information. Food and wine tents will be in full operation but feel free to bring a picnic lunch. Please note: NO PETS. — Memorial Park | $10 for adults | 10am – 6pm

Blast off to a time when Kevin Bacon didn’t need a metric shit-ton of botox and Tom Hanks wasn’t supreme overlord of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Apollo 13 will be showing on the big screen at Discovery Green’s Screen on the Green. — Discovery Green | 1500 McKinney | 8pm | Free.

Rookie drag queens are invited to attend Pranksters – a fundraiser at South Beach benefiting the Montrose Softball League and Bering Omega. You’ll be treated to performances by famous local drag acts as well as disastrous renditions of Bad Romance by novice trannies. Complimentary food and cheap drinks until 10pm. — South Beach | 810 Pacific | $20 cover

Sunday

I love the flexibility of the GRB. From gun shows to comic-cons to Katrina evacuees, the George R. Brown convention center is a little like Mos Eisley, isn’t it? A little bit of something for everyone. This weekend the GRB hosts Comicpalooza, re-invented this time as a multi-format convention celebrating not just comics, but also sci-fi and fantasy, horror, steam punk, New Media, movies, film, and gaming of all types. Highlights include Peter Mayhew (who played Chewbacca) and Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead fame. — George R. Brown Convention Center | 1001 Avenida de las Americas | $20

I like to make up little games that I play with myself. No, perv, I don’t mean that I’m “playing with myself”, rather that it’s a one player game and I’m the single player. I know, nerd central, but that’s how it is. Anyway, one of these games is called Twink or Lesbian. It’s not really a game so much as it is a test of my visual acuity. Before I started wearing contacts a few months back this game was much more interesting. Here’s how Twink or Lesbian came about: I’d see a person in the distance walking toward me and get all excited because it looked like some hot skater guy – only to find out as they got closer that it was a very androgynous woman. I felt cheated. At first I was mad at my boyish lesbian sisters, but now it’s all in good fun. If you’re keeping score, I would incorrectly guess twink 9 times out of 10. Pretty bad, I know. But there are some other people out there who have noticed this phenomenon. The only reason I bring this up is because there is an all-girl skate event on Saturday and Justin Bieber will be here, in concert, on Sunday. Time to take out the contacts!

Saturday

Head on down to the skate park for Babes on Boards - a full day of grrrrls-only skating. Girls of all ages will be there to display their skating ability. Top women skaters from around the country will be there to sign autographs and offer skating tips. Jamail Skatepark | 103 Sabine | 9am-6pm | Free

Local Latina hip-hop/electronica artist Karina Nistal will be at the Continental Club performing starting at 11:30pm. 3700 Main

Sunday

Mayor Annise Parker and Senator Rodney Ellis will ride along with participants in the sixth annual BBVA Compass Tour de Houston. Cyclists will line up at City Hall on Sunday morning, as the bike ride kicks off to benefit the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. The route will take riders on a journey through Houston’s historic districts and parks. 901 Bagby | $35 day-of registration fee

15-year old lesbian pop artist Justin Bieber will appear with Selena Gomez at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Here’s your chance to play Twink or Lesbian for real. Leave your opera glasses at home though. That’s just cheating! Reliant Stadium | $16-$200 | 9pm

With so many art events going on this weekend I can’t help but single out the freebies. Not so much because they’re sans cost, but because they happen to be some of the more interesting exhibits. There is one event that will cost some green this weekend though: The very important and always fun Bringin’ in the Green benefiting the Montrose Counseling Center. The Center, which mostly operates on government grant money, benefits greatly from private donations. Tonight’s event promises to be lots of fun all for a great cause.

Friday

Bringin’ in the Green is a favorite of MCC’s supporters, a long-held tradition in Houston’s GLBT communities, and one of our most enjoyable fundraisers. The annual St. Patrick’s Day event will take place from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the beautiful home of the party’s host, John Danielson. Due to his generous underwriting, along with the hors d’oeuvres courtesy of Dwane Todd, Attorney, 100 percent of the funds raised will go directly to client services. Tickets are just $30 and included with admission are open bar and snacks. For more information go to www.montrosecounselingcenter.org. 1618 Burlington | 5:30pm | $30 | 713.800.0872

FotoFest 2010 opens tonight with a free admission exhibition including food and drink. Check out the start of the biennial photography event at FotoFest Headquarters which will feature Whatever was Splendid: New American Photographs. Live music provided by The Gourds. 1113 Vine | 713.223.5522 | 8pm | Free

Saturday

Eileen Maxon presents: Orphans of Failure – “Last summer, there was an ad on Craigslist offering a free, taxidermy wolverine. The catch was that the current owner considered it haunted, and stipulated “No questions asked.” I started thinking, maybe there was some thing I could get rid of — some bitter toy stewing with bad vibes in the attic. Maybe this thing was the problem, and maybe I could pass on that thing to someone stronger.
So, buyer beware. I’ve scoured the closets, hard drives, pre-teen poetry, firefox history, and my best guess — is 1993.” See Eileen’s exhibit of items from 1993 at Domy Books. 1709 Westheimer | 7pm | Free

Winter Street Studios is having their monthly artist meet & greet on Saturday afternoon. This is usually the largest gathering of local area artists. 2101 Winter | 713.862.0082 | 2pm | Free

Lace up your running shoes. The annual RodeoRun kicks off the Livestock Show and Rodeo parade.

This weekend marks opening of an annual Houston tradition: The Livestock Show and Rodeo. While the actual rodeo doesn’t begin until Tuesday, March 2nd, the ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run is this Saturday. Running these things is a completely new thing for me. A year ago I couldn’t run a block without getting winded. Now I’m signing up for half-marathons. Life is crazy. Even if you don’t run the 10k this weekend, or if you walk the 5k instead, there is a colossal party downtown afterward – and there better be BBQ this time! Along with the Rodeo Run, here are some other events in Houston this weekend.

Friday

Catch a screening of 10 independent films at Freneticore Theater. Shadowbox Cinema spans the wide-eyed world of indie and underground cinema with animated doses of disillusionment, experimental uppercuts of individualism, surreal excursions, and pulsating stories that may detonate upon contact. 5102 Navigation | 7pm | $7

Saturday

The ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run is a 5k/10k combined race that benefits the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo educational fund. 13,000 participants will run down the streets of downtown Houston leading the rodeo kickoff parade. At the finish line a party of epic proportions will take place. Hey, the weather even looks good! Downtown Houston | 9am | See Website For Registration

Sunday

While it’s true I often listen to The Pussycat Dolls’ Jai Ho on repeat while at the gym, the fact is I know very little about Indian culture and food. Fortunately, the Indian Festival of Colors is this weekend in Sugar Land! Come see HOLI 2010 at Oyster Creek Park on Sunday starting at 11am. Come dressed in white and expect people to throw red (non toxic) dye powder on you. Sounds like a GWAR concert to me. Oyster Creek Park | Hwy 6 and Settlers Way | Free Admission

Is that you?

This is going to be one of those weekends where your liver walks out in protest. Hopefully you’ll be able to coax it back in by Monday morning for work, but you never know. How much is a black market liver these days? Galveston is a lovely little place (What’s left of it!…. Too soon?). The residents of Galveston have made a nifty little hobby out of mimicking larger cities’ big events. They have Galveston Pride – ripping off our version (and, frankly, they’ve picked a much better time of year to have it!) – and they have this version of Mardi Gras. The thing is, they usually throw an amazing party. Often giving the original event a run for its money. So if you’re up for the short drive and have a place to stay down there, check it out!

Friday

The 99th Annual Mardi Gras Galveston starts today and runs through February 16th. The island comes alive with 11 extravagant parades, more than 50 galas and festive events, bead throwing, exhibits, live entertainment in local clubs, and the best Gulf Coast cuisine in the world. One of the most popular annual events to take place in Texas, the event is rich with laughter, celebration and people watching. Over 250,000 people attend each year. Many of them look just like the three ladies in the picture above. Galveston Island | 22nd & Market

Saturday

Last Friday I went to see Rent at the Country Playhouse with very low expectations, after all, it is community theater. I ended up being blown away by great performances and an excellent live band. Naturally, I am intrigued and want to go back. They’re currently showing Pig Farm which is described like this: A parodic presentation on corporate factory farming and a group of dimwits who work one of the farms. Country Playhouse | 12802 Queensbury | Town & Country | $12-$17

Sunday

It’s Super Bowl Sunday! Am I even allowed to type those words? I fear a lawsuit from the NFL. Well, until the cease & desist letter arrives, I can tell you about Frank’s Annual Super Bowl Party at Guava Lamp. Each year the manager at Guava throws a fun little bash with free food and cheap drinks. This year there will be $2 longnecks and drink specials each touchdown. No cover. Guava Lamp | 570 Waugh | 21+

Wednesday nights in Houston are almost always interesting. I’ve never really known why this is the case, but something weird always happens on Wednesdays. Take this past Wednesday for example: I went out to Guava Lamp and had a few drinks with some friends. Nothing big. Then, around 12:30am, I decided to go home. As I was leaving the bar, I ran into Nikki Snelson, and the following exchange ensued:

Josh: “OMG you’re Nikki Snelson!”

Nikki: “OMG I am!”

Josh: “You were in Legally Blonde: The Musical! We met in New York at the stage door!”

Nikki: “Come drink with me!”

The rest of the evening is a bit of a blur, but I do remember two things: I mangled OMG You Guys on stage during karaoke that night (there is a video of this somewhere), and I learned that Nikki is playing the Mad Hatter in Wonderland – a new musical that is currently playing at the Alley Theater in Houston! Based on what I’ve seen and heard so far, it’s a must see. Here are a few things going on in Houston this weekend, including Wonderland.

Friday

See A Single Man at the River Oaks Theater. Set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, A Single Man is the story of George Falconer (Colin Firth), a 52-year-old British college professor who is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his longtime partner, Jim (Matthew Goode). Directed and co-written by acclaimed fashion designer Tom Ford. River Oaks Theater | 2009 W. Gray

Saturday

Comedian and talk-show host Bill Maher is appearing at Cullen Performance Hall on Saturday. I once saw Bill in South Florida and I must say his act is funny and entertaining. The ticket prices are a bit steep this year though, and I’m not sure why. Cullen Performance Hall – UH | 4800 Calhoun | Tickets $52-$92 | 713-743-5186

Sunday

Composer Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll and Hyde) returns to the Alley with Wonderland, a delightful new musical that updates Alice’s adventures through an amazing pop score. Alley audiences will be among the first to see this new musical that tells the story of Alice, a children’s book writer in Manhattan who is suffering through a creative block, estranged from her husband and alienated from her daughter. Alley Theater | 615 Texas | 2:3opm and 7:30pm | $45+

Image: tequilasource.com

Hopefully the weather will hold up this weekend so you can get out and enjoy the slightly warmer temps! Friday seems to be a routine night in town without any huge events planned. The usual places have drinks, drag, and drama. A few local bands are playing at their regular gig spots. Saturday and Sunday, however, offer a few must see events. Starting things off right: A tequila fest. Oh yes. Wine tastings never blew up my skirt, but a massive collection of tequila for sampling? ¡Ay carumba!

Saturday

M-Pact Houston is hosting a YMSM Workshop entitled “Sexy Health Choices” from 1pm until 4pm at Guava Lamp. It will be an “informal approach to discovering the factors surrounding risk behaviors that young men who have sex with men engage in.” Notwithstanding the poor grammar, their advert looks interesting; featuring a picture of what looks to be a bunch of teenage boys and a notation that says “free food for guys 24 and under.” Anywho, it’s sponsored by the Houston Department of Health and Human Services so I’m sure it’s legit! Guava Lamp | 570 Waugh | 713.794.9276 to RSVP

Coffee Groundz is thowing a Texas Tequila Throwdown featuring over 21 different tequilas to sample for FREE. That’s my favorite price! There will be a DJ and plenty of non-alcoholic options if that’s your kind of thing. The shindig starts at 3pm sharp! Coffee Groundz | 2503 Bagby | 832.452.2804

The Rice Players are one crazy bunch. Their latest production is a play that was written, rehearsed, directed, and performed in a 24-hour period. Come see the result of their labor – and the hilarious, sleep-deprived acting – for free. Rice U | 6100 Main | 8pm | www.theatre.rice.edu

Sunday

Start your morning (or afternoon) off right with brunch at one of our favorite local spots. Every few weeks I like to list some of the best places to grab a bite to eat in town. My favorite, Rivas, is a bit of a dive – but the food is delicious and affordable. They have some of the best eggs benedict in town. Also, try Baba Yega. Of course, you will most likely wait 30 minutes to 1 hour for a table, but it’s worth it. Great atmosphere and a great brunch buffet. Empire Cafe offers a faster alternative, but it is often crowded. They have great coffee and an excellent breakfast taco. For some delicious wings and waffles, try The Breakfast Klub. You’ll also wait in line here, but it’s worth it. I promise! Rivas – 1117 Missouri | Baba Yega – 2607 Grant | Empire Cafe – 1732 Westheimer | The Breakfast Klub – 3711 Travis

Comedy duo Jaston Williams and Joe Sears perform as small-town crazy ladies on their way to sin city. Tuna Does Vegas balances as both an affectionate comment on small-town life and attitudes as well a hilarious satire of the same. Hobby Center | 800 Bagby | 7pm | $25+

Things to do around Houston that are not the marathon!

You know an event is going to be big when the weatherman says, “The weather should be nice for [insert event name here].” So you can imagine now nervous I got when Frank Billingsley (among others) started forecasting for the Chevron Houston Marathon this Sunday. When I was in college I lived in a city that hosted two massive, city-wide events every year. One of them had something to do with NASCAR, which still makes me shudder. I quickly learned to avoid leaving my apartment on these days. It was a local tradition: Stock up on groceries the day before and make yourself comfortable. Venturing outside would have been maddening because of traffic, crowds, etc.

I took one look at the route map for this year’s Chevron Houston Marathon and decided there was no way I could deal with this. So screw it, I’m off to Paris! If you stick around, here are a few things going on this weekend that should not be impacted by the runners:

Friday

If you are a gay man and you do not know about Steel Magnolias you must promptly surrender your Gay License and face tribunal at the gay central office in your city. (Gay Code of Regs. §101.003). I am aware that many of you did not know this so, to spare you’re the hassle of excommunication, I suggest you attend this live performance of the classic story written by Robert Harling. You’ll join six women working in a Louisiana beauty shop and laugh and cry as the reality of their lives unfolds. Stage Door Inc. | 284 Pasadena Town Square Mall, Pasadena, TX | 832-582-7606| $15

Saturday

Miss Coco Peru is taking on Texas. You may have seen Coco on Arrested Development, Will & Grace, trick, and Too Wong Foo. Or you may be just hearing about her now, like me. In any case, this show will most likely emulate Scott Thompson’s Buddy Cole with the addition of a wig and a few songs. I’m desperately seeking a fresh, entertaining drag act. Hopefully this will be it! Freneticore Theater | 5201 Navigation | $25 to $45 | 8pm

Sunday

Stay off the roads until early evening to avoid the runners and then run on over to Guava Lamp for karaoke! Join Toddicus after 10pm for the always enjoyable renditions of Journey, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears – all while getting your drink on. 570 Waugh | No Cover | 21+

Well, 2009 sure was one helluva year, wasn’t it? I’m not even going to begin to summarize the events that made it so, ahem, special.
From faux Oscars to the Nutcracker. Houston offers amateur critics plenty to see.

Well it looks like things are finally drying out around here. I have to accept part of the blame for yesterday’s rain. You see, I spent $13 dollars on a car wash at Bubbles which is usually more effective than cloud seeding when it comes to bringing on a downpour.

Photo by Dallas Children & The Arts Fund

Turns out there is a bunch to do this weekend in Houston. From a CD release party tonight at Guava to the Nutcracker ballet on Sunday.

Friday

Join OutSmart Magazine and Centaur at Guava Lamp for the official CD release party of Chad Guidry’s Popular 4. Chad will spin live starting at 9pm. For more info, visit www.guavalamphouston.com. Guava Lamp – 570 Waugh – 9pm – No Cover.

Saturday

If you’ve always wanted to be a part of the Oscars in Hollywood, but just couldn’t manage to get invited, here’s your chance for the next best thing: The Houston Film Critics Society’s Award Ceremony is Saturday night at the Museum of Fine Arts. Critics from around the area vote on this year’s best films and awards are presented – I’m not really sure to whom, but someone accepts them. Actual celebrities attend this event. Like Police Academy’s G.W. Bailey for example! For details, visit www.houstonfilmcritics.com. MFAH – 1001 Bissonnet – 4pm – Free.

Sunday

This is the last Houston Weekend Preview before Christmas, so I’d be remiss in my duties if I didn’t mention a Christmassy event. How about the Nutcracker? No, not that crazy leather dude that lurks at Ripcord, the actual ballet! The Houston Ballet presents a fabulous rendition of this timeless story. Set in 19th century Germany, the ballet opens at a charming Christmas party at which the mysterious Dr. Drosselmeyer gives his little niece Clara a magical toy that takes her on an unforgettable journey. Brown Theater – Wortham Center – 501 Texas Ave. – 2:00pm & 7:30pm – Tickets $33 to $93 – Call 713.227.2787.

Hello TNGers! I must apologize for the lack of a Houston Weekend Preview last weekend. It’s not that there wasn’t anything going on, other than the massive amount of schoolwork I’ve had to deal with lately. But enough about me! This weekend brings us a very bizarre variety of goings-on that are bound to please at least some of you. Perhaps all of you. I for one will attend each and every one of these events. When you see what’s going on, how could you miss them?

Friday

Folk singer-songwriter Jewel will be at the Verizon Wireless Theater tonight. Jewel has had one helluva career from several hit albums/singles to some unfortunate guest spots on random TV shows. (Like being a judge on Iron Chef America – yikes!) – But we still love her. How can you not? Quit standing still and buy tickets for this show! Verizon Wireless Theater – 520 Texas – 8pm – $39+

Also on Friday: Calling all Big Lebowski fans! Fix yourself a white Russian or six and head on over to Discovery Green for human bowling and other Lebowski shenanigans, dude. Event starts at 7:30pm and a special showing of the movie will start at 10:00pm. Discovery Green – LaBranch & McKinney – Free Admission

Saturday

Do you have what it takes to rock a dance floor? Show off your DJ skills at Guava Lamp on Saturday night during the Houston’s Next Top DJ contest. Hosted by KRBE’s own Special K, you’ll have a chance to win $500 cash and a spot on Guava’s DJ roster. Starts at 10pm and as always, no cover. Guava Lamp – 570 Waugh

Sunday

I laugh as I write this one. Only because this rapper/artist created one of the most ridiculous yet entertaining songs ever to make it to a 13 year-old’s iPod. Rapper Mickey Avalon, the guy who brought us My Dick, is appearing at Warehouse Live at 8pm. I have to go. I have to see him in person. I encourage you to join me. Also, check out Margaret Cho’s parody of his classic. Her version is called My Puss. Warehouse Live – 813 St. Emanuel – 8pm – $18

There will be plenty of places to show off your Halloween costume this weekend in Houston.

Why the Halloweenie Edition? Two reasons, actually: First, San Francisco took “The Halloween” edition. Second, this picture right here:

Jack Russell-O-Lantern

There is something inherently amusing and enjoyable about pets in costumes. I had no idea how big the pet costume industry was until I noticed an entire section of pet costumes at Target. I would bet it’s at least a $2 million dollar per year industry. Thousands more if you count all of the pet therapy you’re going to have to get for your pooch after traumatizing him. By the way, be careful if you do a Google image search for “halloweenie” – One of the images that popped up (no pun intended) was of a costume you are almost certain to see at one of this weekend’s Halloween Night events listed below! Enjoy your Tricks….and Treats!

Halloween Night Saturday

This year Charles Armstrong has gone all out, reserving an entire street block for this year’s Halloween Block Party on the 800 block of Pacific. Taking place in front of JR’s Bar & Grill, The Mining Company, and South Beach, there will be a street party, drag race (Careful in those heels, girls!), costume contest, and of course, dance party afterward. The drag race is emceed by legendary adult video director Chi Chi LaRue. Events start at 9pm. South Beach – 800 Pacific – $15 advance/$20 door.

If you would rather not pay to party, but would still like to show off your costume for a chance to win cash prizes, check out Guava Lamp at 11pm for their annual costume contest hosted by Toddicus. Guava Lamp – 570 Waugh – No Cover.

If you’re looking for what is arguably the most terrifying place in Houston (besides Ripcord after 2am), then perhaps you should visit the legendary ScreamWorld. Opening at 7pm on Saturday night, go get the bejeezus scared out of you before you get your drink on. ScreamWorld – N Beltway 8 – 1.5 miles West of I-45 – $25.

Sunday

This weekend we’re recommending you take advantage of the extra hour of sleep (Remember to set your clocks back 1 hour!) and take it easy.

Friday

Dinosaur Jr. will be at Warehouse Live – on tour to promote their latest album, Farm. Long referred to as a slacker-core band, these guys are really just alternative rock that stood the test of time. Dinosaur jokes abound. With Built To Spill, The Missing, and Disco Doom. Warehouse Live – 813 St. Emanuel – 8pm – $27

Saturday

If you weren’t in the mood to drink yourself silly in Galveston this weekend, drink yourself silly in Houston instead. Join me at Guava Lamp starting at 4pm for happy hour, then stick around later for DJ Special K from 104.1 FM. Guava Lamp – 570 Waugh – No Cover – 21+

Sunday

The composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim is the most important artist to work in the American musical theater over the past half-century. He has not only collaborated on more than a dozen landmark shows and written countless standard songs but has also been the single most influential force in bringing the Broadway musical into the modern age. See Mr. Sondheim live with Frank Rich for an onstage conversation about his career. Jones Hall – 615 Louisiana – 7:30pm – Tickets $22 and up.

The downtown skyline serves as a dramatic backdrop for art, music, dance, and interactive activities at the Bayou City Art Festival Downtown.

The annual, juried, fine art event boasts a stress-free outdoor gallery brimming with 300 artists working in 19 artistic media. Adding to the festive outdoor gallery are wine cafés, the interactive Capital One Creative Zone for children, restaurants, and a performing arts stage with on-going multicultural musical and dance entertainment presented by The Houston Arts Alliance.

The festival is showcased in front of City Hall and around Hermann Square on the streets of Walker, Bagby, and McKinney, as well as Sam Houston Park.

TNG had the opportunity to interview Bayou City Art Festival Featured Artist, Kimber Fiebiger, whose “Humpty Dumpty” sculptures have gained her significant notoriety in the artistic community.

TNG: Kimber, how’d you get involved with art? Have you been an artist all your life or did this start as a hobby?

Kimber Fiebiger: When I was little and people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always told them an artist, but I was never exposed to art. My mom was a home maker and my dad was an electrician. I have no idea how it happened, but I’ve always known strongly that this is what I’d do.

TNG: As an artist, I imagine it is a long and arduous process to get to the point of feeling like you’ve “made it” in terms of your art’s recognition. When did this occur for you?

KF: Probably two years ago when a restaurant called David Burke opened in Vegas that was themed around my work. Also, I think getting out of debt for the first time in my life [laughs].

TNG: You’re probably most well known for your “Humpty Dumpty” sculptures. What made you decide to make these? What was your inspiration?

KF: I have a son, who’s 28 now, but when he was 2 years old he asked me to make him a Humpty Dumpty and I did. After that, it’s just been the world asking for them, and me making them, but I use the profits from the Humpty Dumpties to make a lot of the other work I make.

TNG: You are so well known for these pieces, does this bother you? Was there a time when you were concerned about being “type cast” as the Humpty Dumpty lady?

KF: You know, I didn’t want to be known for my fine art for a long time. About two years ago I gave up resistance to that – everyone knows me as the Humpty Dumpty lady. So I was just like, “Well, I’m giving it up. I’m going with it.” – It’s worked for me. I’m grateful for it.

TNG: You are also known for your GLBT-themed artwork, do you find that you have a lot of support from within the GLBT community?

Art by Kimber Fiebiger

KF: It used to be that the GLBT community was a major source of support for me. You know, I do gay pride and I have a lot of lesbian sculptures. Also, the gay community in Minneapolis were a huge source of support when I was starting out.

TNG: As the featured artist this year at the Bayou City Art Festival, what does that mean for you?

KF: Well, it means hopefully I’ll have a big presence and that I will sell a lot of things that will make me a lot of money so I can go home and make more artwork. The bronze sculpture is pretty labor intensive. You know, I’m the typical lesbian. I have a lots of tools. Lots of welders, plasma cutters, [laughs]. I have lots of equipment and I know how to use it!

The Bayou City Art Festival is this weekend, Oct. 10 & 11. Tickets are $10 for adults and free for children 12 and under. Open from 10am until 6pm both days.

Okay, readers. I owe you an apology. For two weekends in a row I’ve distributed flawed information in the Weekend Preview. Last weekend, I told you to get out and enjoy the festival-perfect weather! Well, I think I’ve proven that I’d make a pretty horrendous weatherman. As if that wasn’t enough, the week before I incorrectly attributed the song Lips Like Sugar to the Psychedelic Furs, when in reality, it’s an Echo & The Bunnymen song. I knew that! I guess I should stop writing these things at 3am

I shouldn't have trusted that TNG weather forecast.

Friday

Catch The Postmarks with Brookville at The Mink. This indie-pop band hails from my home territory of South Florida – and we know what that does for a band. Mink on Main – 3718 Main St @ Alabama – 21+

Saturday

The weekly Weekends at BARC is on Saturday this weekend. Come out to the Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care to walk the dogs and perhaps find a new friend to adopt! 2700 Evella – 9am-12pm.

Come out and see lesbian artist Kimber Fiebiger and her “Humpties” at the Bayou City Art Festival Downtown – The bi-annual event features over one hundred local and national artists in a fun downtown setting. Hey, it might rain! Bring a poncho! Hermann Square – 10am-6pm – $10.

Later in the day, attend the third annual celebration to commemorate National Coming Out Day. Held at a private residence, this event is a social mixer, as well as an art auction/fundraiser. There will be an open bar and light hors d’oeuvres. Proceeds from the event benefit Pride Houston and the Montrose Counseling Center. 614 E. 10 1/2 St. – 4pm-7pm – $25 – For tix, click here.

Sunday

Rain or shine, karaoke at Guava Lamp is always a Sunday evening favorite. In an attempt to make amends to my musical error two weeks ago, I’ll be there, martini in hand, singing both Psychedlic Furs and Echo & The Bunnymen. Stop by to laugh at me – or pick up the mic and see if you can do better! 570 Waugh – 21+.

The first cool air of Autumn is upon us and I am reminded of a ritual that used to take place back in my college days in Central Florida. For some reason, Goth kids (essentially Emo kids' predecessors, for those who don't know what I'm talking about) were everywhere back in the late 1990s. I loved them. They were great to party with. I was even known to don all-black clothing and excessive guyliner from time to time. (Hard to believe, I know!) Anyway, the ritual, a night on the town in full Goth getup was never planned or discussed. It coincided with the first cool nights of September or early October. Halloween was right around the corner, and the new cool temperatures evoked a feeling of change. In the case of the Goths the change was being able to dress like a vampire without sweating their junk off - a welcome change indeed.

This weekend in Houston we highlight events that welcome a healthy dose of eyeliner and black garb. Go ahead and wear that long sleeve NIN shirt. No one will judge you. In fact, you'll fit in just fine.

Friday

Be sure to catch DJ Wes Wallace at Numbers – the finest (and only) Goth club in Houston. They call it Classic Numbers. Why? Because it’s 80s all night along with .75 cent Bud drafts and $1.50 well drinks. Rockin’ it Regan style! – Numbers – 300 Westheimer – 18+.

Saturday

See the Psychedelic Furs and Happy Mondays at The House of Blues on Saturday night. Doors at 7pm and be sure to bring something sweet as you’ll want to have lips like sugar. The House of Blues – 1204 Caroline – $30 day of show – All Ages Welcome.

Sunday

Join special host Kofi at South Beach on Sunday night starting at 11pm. It’s their Super Sunday Drag Show – and while not a goth event, per se., you’ll fit in just fine wearing a healthy dose of eye makeup. So cake it on and enjoy. South Beach – Free before 11pm, $5.00 after. – 808 Pacific.

When I was just a lil gay back in high school, I was a writer for the school yearbook. Nerdy? Yes. Gay as hell? Duh. One day, while looking for sponsors we found an ad for a used car dealership called Anything On Wheels. Probably high as a Georgia pine, we placed a phone call to said dealership that ended up being one of my favorite crank calls ever: I forget the details (remember: Georgia pine), but I do remember asking the lady if she had sandwiches on wheels and then laughing with her on the phone for what seemed like 20 minutes. Ahhh.... you had to be there.

I bring up wheels for two reasons: This weekend you can roller skate to the 80s (wheels!) and you can drive outside the loop to see a good show (better have good wheels for that trip). I don't mean to sound like an inner-loopist, but hey, the theater is on "Way Out West Drive" so make sure you have a full tank of gas before you go.

Catch See Rock City at Theatre Suburbia – opens tonight and continues through October 17th. I don’t know if this is going to be a very good place to meet guys, but it is community theater so it’s a good bet. Theatre Suburbia – 4106 Way Out West Dr. – Phone: 713-682-3525 – Tickets $14 – www.theatresuburbia.com

If you’re in a theater mood but don’t want to drive far, see Grease (Featuring Taylor Hicks “sooo that’s what he’s doing now!”) presented by TUTS at the Hobby Center – 800 Bagby – 713-315-2400.

Saturday

Everyone is encouraged to dress in their Most Awesome 80′s attire with an 80′s Inspired Best Dressed Contest. Also, there will be an open bar, door prizes, and a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit The Lazarus House, a nonprofit organization that provides a complete, low cost program of wellness in a comfortable, nonclinical environment for chronically ill clients suffering from disease related wasting syndrome or cachexia. Dairy Ashford – $30 at door – 21+ only.

Sunday

I know most of you will be busy brunching and preparing to watch NPH host the Emmys, but if you get tired of watching musical numbers and decide to perform a musical number of your own, it’s karaoke night at Guava! Check out one of the best gay karaoke spots in town. Order one or two of Bartender Amanda’s signature martinis and someone’s going to have to wheel you out of there! (That’s all I got, folks!) Guava Lamp – 570 Waugh Dr. – No Cover.
