What is Future Games? If we’re to believe the event promo, it’s a futuristic party set in a time when “The world has been reborn after a semi-apocalyptic alien laser-cat invasion.” That’s right. And if you’re not already sold on the event after that set up, I really don’t know what you’re doing here. Details: Oberon. 2 Arrow Street. Cambridge (Harvard Square). 10pm-2am. $10. 18+.

Whatever it is, you’re likely find it at T.T. the Bear’s Heroes party tonight. Details: T.T. the Bear’s. 10 Brookline Street.
I had barely gotten through the door and explained to the doorman that I was guest listed and thus exempt from the $5 cover charge when Kristen Ford of The Kristen Ford Band approached me grinning, hand outstretched. “Thanks for coming out tonight!” It wasn’t a line. Well, it was, of course, but she meant it. I watched as she sauntered around the room in her skinny jeans, blue vans and full on swagger, striking up conversations with all attendees. “I love your haircut” She smiled genuinely at a blushing blonde seated by the bar. She is good at playing the host role. She made a point to greet each person who attended the event and thank them for coming out, and I could sense people responded to her gracious hospitality.

I purposefully arrived early in hopes I would be able to shamelessly name drop The New Gay and ask her a few questions. Luckily, this worked out well. Immediately after revealing I was the girl she had been corresponding with via iphone emails, her face brightened and we began conversing about Big Night Out: a queer live music and dance party she hosts monthly at The Burren in Davis Square.

Kristen Ford: The idea basically was, let’s get a bunch of people together–gay, straight, trans, queer, and enjoy the music [collectively]. I don’t have a problem going to straight establishments. Sometimes, I’ll go and be the only gay girl there and I don’t feel uncomfortable. So, I would hope straight people wouldn’t mind coming to a queer party where we all can get down on the awesome band… [pause] but, you know, you may also see two girls making out at the bar. [We laugh at this together.]

The New Gay: Why this venue?

KF: I just went around to different clubs asking to do a queer party once a month and the Burren was very chill, very accommodating so we stuck with them.

Kristen explained that she books different local bands, musicians and DJs to play ‘Big Night Out’. She kept emphasizing her love for variety and togetherness, talking about wanting to find a trans DJ every month, knowing that it would likely make her job even harder. She mentioned that all the bands booked for the show tonight were made up of both guys and girls. “I love that!” she gushed excitedly.

I am in awe of her progressive attitude towards nightlife politics. She has no use for any type of segre-gay-tion in clubs, she wants everyone (gay, straight, trans, men, women) together on the dance floor enjoying themselves. Yes, there were copious lesbians scattered among the crowd, but plenty of gay men were strewn about the room as well. I think I may have even spotted a straight couple to my left (though my straight-dar is tenuous as I prefer to exist in a homocentric orbit where everyone is gay until proven straight).

Be sure to check out the next installment of ‘Big Night Out’ on May 16 at The Burren for some awesome live music, dancing, and a rad, queer vibe! You shouldn’t miss experiencing Kristen’s full on gay girl swagger for yourself and lending support for her initiative to normalize queer and be a full on proponent for equality, cohesion, and everyone shaking their booties together on the dance floor!
