About wendy

wendy@thenewgay.net

-After spending eight years in and out of college, I graduated only to find a job where I made less working 40 hours a week than I did working 30 hours a week in a mall to put myself through school.
-I'm still waiting for my ends to meet. In the meantime, I'm having a blast figuring out how to make the most out of very little and not as much fun raising two cats with very different viewpoints about the world in a cramped studio apartment.
-I am fascinated with carnival artifacts and the freakshows of yore, and I'm thinking about volunteering at a local museum where they're working to preserve the history of it all.
-I've realized along the way that people usually perceive me to be similar to them, maybe because I'm so quiet. I'm queer. You can take that to mean whatever you want.
-I love old books, especially if they look like they've been read over and over again. I usually sleep with my cats and a couple of books next to me. Sometimes a couple magazines come join the party. I used to include my phone, but one night I woke up on top of it, and the screen was cracked. I'm not sure how that happened, but now that I've upgraded to a Blackberry, I'm not taking any chances.
-I love dark art and darker music. I have a delusion that if I stomp my feat and wave my hands around in the air, I'm dancing. It's fun, but probably horrifying to behold.
-I am the nerdiest person I know. If someone would pay me to play role playing games (think Dungeons and Dragons) and/ or video games and/ or read every day, that is what I would do. Since I don't get paid for any of it, I only spend about 70- 80 percent of my time being a hopeless nerd.

Tampa Weekend Preview: Hot and Sticky Edition

[caption id="attachment_11263" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Photo by Hans Bruesch"]Photo by Hans Bruesch[/caption]The weather in Tampa has been sweltering for months now, and the frequent thunderstorms we’ve been experience have almost been a relief (even with the flooding, water damage, and leaky roofs). With summer more than halfway over, I say it’s time to revel in the sticky, hot, humid weather while we have it. Because for three or four whole months, it just might get under 70 degrees.

Tampa Weekend Preview: Bohemian Edition

[caption id="attachment_10817" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Photo by Hans Bruesch"]Photo by Hans Bruesch[/caption]This weekend is going to be so filled with art, music, fashion, and more art, that you would think we were really in the land of Bohemia (which, in the world of RENT, is New York City). The big news is that RENT is playing through Sunday, but if you’ve already seen the show or it just isn’t your thing, have a gander at the other events for this weekend and support real starving artists trying to make it in a Southern city that doesn’t always provide shelter for creatives in its midst.

Tampa’s Guide to Artful Explosions

Why not brave the heat and enjoy the 4th of July the way it was intended: with a nice cold beer, some smoky BBQ or other good eats, and a fireworks show by a bunch of professionals, not the guy four doors down who sports a greasy mullet.

Through 7/5 – Gaybor Days takes over Ybor

[caption id="attachment_10337" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Logo provided by GaYbor.com"]Logo provided by GaYbor.com[/caption]The Tampa area is recovering from Pride. The last of the glitter has been brushed from our hair, our sunburns fresh and new, and photos from parades and parties decking out our Myspace and Facebook profiles. What better way is there to finish off the festivities than another week of partying and debauchery?

Tampa Weekend Preview: Crazed Fangirl (or Boi) Edition

Years ago (and, it’s weird to think of my college days as years ago) I put my zombie obsession aside for a few weeks. I decided that I was probably a furry, because I liked cats and thought cartoon animals made to look like people were really cute (Yay cat girls!). As time went on and I met more and more furries, I realized the lifestyle just wasn’t for me. However, my brush with the furrydom made me realize how accepting the movement is, and how much crap they take from other people.

Tampa Weekend 2: Gay Days Alternative Edition

Whether it’s because of the crowds, cost, or climate of Gay Days, some of us are going to be sticking closer to home for the weekend. For everyone who isn’t taking the yearly trek to Florida’s wonderland, there are still events worth noting.
