About Rocky

Yep, I am the Managing Editor around these parts. So, yes, it's probably my fault. But about me? I'm just a dude from DC, home after a long stint in Manhattan. Late 20s, textbook Sagittarius, musician, writer, confirmed bachelor, etc. A stiff bourbon and coke is the quickest way to my heart, and I don't like blueberries or tofu. In other words, I am depth personified. Drop me a line anytime at: rocky@thenewgay.net.

Here’s one for all you indie fags out there. Check out this vid of Bon Iver and St. Vincent joining forces to cover the Annie Lennox classic, “Why?” at a Haiti benefit in Brooklyn last weekend. Obviously, it’s nowhere near the original and, to me at least, it’s got kind of a “best prom band in the tri-state area” vibe to it, but it’s pretty interesting, not to mention pretty daring. I mean you have to have some balls, as a singer, to even go near Annie Lennox. Just sayin’…

I’ve really liked this band ever since I first heard them at Macrock last year. They’ve got this Nico meets the White Stripes thing that’s kind of rough, but sexy and cool at the same time. Check out the Roanoke, VA duo’s new video below and for more Eternal Summers click this.

The Long Walk Home

Aside from my mother’s guitar, my favorite possession, naturally, is my iPod. And I’m fully convinced that somehow it’s hardwired to my brain. True, I’ve personally picked the now 6,000 songs on there, so that just might have something to do with it, but somehow when I put it on shuffle, it always magically knows what to play and when to play it. Tonight, I’m still recovering from a rather nasty bout of food poisoning (do NOT order the meatloaf at Open City!!!), and suffering from an acute case of late 20′s life malaise. Here’s how my beloved iPod commiserated and cheered me up on the long, boring walk to and from Michael and Zack’s apartment on this unseasonably warm, melancholy Tuesday night here in the DoC. Enjoy!

Totally Wack or Kind of Funny? I Can’t Decide…

I’m sure some of you have heard about the latest and greatest in gay-themed Tumblrs, Guys I Blocked on Grindr. Basically, I guess the idea is people send in the Grindr profiles of their most favorite unsuitable NSA-boning candidates and they’re put up on the internets for general mockery. On the one hand, of course, gays come in all colors, shapes and sizes, and people shouldn’t be mocked simply for not fitting into the beauty standards of mainstream gay blah blah New Gay cakes.  But on the other hand, some dudes are real weird and sketchy when they’re trying to get ass and that’s kinda funny, right? At the very least, like all Tumblr blogs, it’s something mildly amusing to glance at while you’re bored at work. (Insert gratuitous self-promotion here.)
