Queercore: What is it?

Music, zines, and DIY. Queercore is one of my favorite things. Queercore is queer punk rock but so much more. I mentioned it in my article “Gay/Lesbian verse Queer: What’s the difference?” If you’ll take a trip over to QZAP and find issues of J.D.’s by Bruce LaBruce and G.B. Jones, you can trance by to when the term queercore was coined.

Racism in the Queer Scene

“Man, there’s a lot of white people here!” was my greeting when I first arrived at the UCSB’s Resource Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity, a supposed safe place for all students. “Okay.” I replied, really not knowing what to say. Was I supposed to say “I’m sorry?” My race isn’t anymore my fault than the sex I was born into. Later, the speaker of my greeting would turn me down for a dance because I was white. Genderqueer: Breaking the Mold

The gender binary is a form of oppression and hierarchy. There are as many genders as there are people. Gender is a social construct created by people to dictate what sort of life a person should have by what’s in their pants. Most people never think to question their gender accepting what has been instilled in them from the time they were born. However, some of us do. We are the gender rebels and we walk amongst you. For some of us, the standard model of reality being separated into male and female is unacceptable. I don’t identify as either male or female. I am something else outside of the gender binary. I am genderqueer.

Pink and Black Attack: I am a Radical Queer

I am a radical queer. I have tattoos, piercings, and a mohawk. I use dental floss to sew patches on my clothes and I even silkscreen my own patches. I am an activist and I organize. I fight for freedom from oppression, peace, and equality. I am an anarchist, against all marriage, and against assimilation.

Gay/Lesbian Verses Queer: What’s the Difference?

I know mainstream culture has begun to use “queer” as a synonym with “gay/lesbian” with such shows as “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and “Queer as Folks” but they really aren’t. It’s like asking the difference between a cappuccino and a latte – to the untrained eye there’s no difference but there really is.
