About Hans
Photography Columnist hans@thenewgay.net
I've lived in cities, suburbs, beach towns, and the middle of nowhere. The only one of those environments that I truly disliked would have to be the 'burbs. As for my favorite, it's a tossup between the city and the beach. I love any Bond movie starring Connery, Moore, or Craig. I came out to literally everyone I knew, with the exception of my über-conservative Mormon extended family, over a period of three weeks when I was 20. My parents, along with the closest aunts and uncles on my mother's side, left the church a long time ago and have been nothing but awesome about having a queer son/nephew. Despite my incredibly foreign-sounding name, both sides of my family have been in the US since before the turn of the 20th century. I've been a deliriously obsessed hockey fan since I was a child. If you ever see me dancing, it's a safe bet that I'm drunk.

Jo Ann Santangelo is on a mission to let the stories of LGBT veterans who were discharged under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, or served and suffered in silence, be heard. The result is a touching, often heart-wrenching work in progress composed of still shots and spoken word accounts collected over the last year.
