13+1 Completely Random Things About Me

  • If I could get away with it, cashmere would be the only fabric in our house.
  • I talk a lot when I get nervous.
  • I hate anything that tastes even remotely like coffee.
  • I love being a photographer. It's forced me to slow down and see beauty in places where I never would have noticed it before.
  • My dream cars include, but are not limited to, a 1971 Corvette Stingray convertible , a late model Porsche 911 cabriolet, a Jeep Rubicon, a 1967 Camaro RSS convertible, and a Mercedes Benz 280 .
  • One day I want to drive one of those dream cars to a house in the country my partner and I will own where we have planted fields of sunflowers.
  • I think the funniest words in the English language are monkey, Frankenstein, and zombie.
  • I wrote a piece of legislation that was passed into law. I have one of the pens President Clinton used to sign it.
  • I believe that almost all people are inherently good.
  • When I was 25 I decided that I no longer needed to learn things “the hard way.” I am totally open to advice and learning from other people’s life experiences.
  • My Mom is one of the most amazing people in the world. If I become half the person she is, I will be extremely happy.
  • I fell in love with Adrian the first time I met him, and he is the only person in the world who, on daily basis, motivates me to ask and answer the question, “How can I be a better person?” We are registered domestic partners in DC.
  • I am a hopeless romantic, and I wish people would say, "screw it. I am going to carry out more sweet, thoughtful acts of kindness just to make another person smile."
  • I didn’t believe in marriage until Adrian and I separated for about 8 months during 2007 and 2008. Most people, would have given up, but we didn’t. That is one of my proudest accomplishments. Because we beat the odds for “traditional” marriage (51% end in divorce), we’ve changed our minds and will get married one day.

Neon Embers and Asphalt

If I didn’t get out of the house I was going to say something I would later regret. This time, I kept my mouth shut, grabbed my camera, and I left. I climbed into my Jeep. The top was down; the radio was blaring something loud with lots of guitar and drums and a hot, rocker singing how much he wished I was there with him. I guess this is the point where I am supposed to congratulate myself for not making things worse, but I was still boiling over with rage. The anger was tangible. It was a nitroglycerin film, a second layer of skin, covering my entire body. If I had to deal with one more thing, any one little, tiny irritating thing, I was going to burst into flames.

Squandering Our Legacy of Victory?

So, I put it to you now. Don’t simply maintain the community we have; break the mold. No matter your age, start dreaming big and let those marvelous visions be the seeds of the community you want, and it will bear fruit to sustain the baby queers running around in Osh Kosh, whose parents are telling them they are wrong for kissing other little boys instead of little girls. What voice will they inherit from us?

Mornings suck. So every morning TNG brings you a fun video to ease the pain.
There weren’t any of the stereotypical indications that I would turn out to be gay, but …

Got Faith?

I’ve also learned that one of the worst things the Christian faithful can do is behave in a way that causes others to turn their backs on God. Sometimes, I get angry thinking about the queer kids who’ve allowed their spiritual beliefs to shrivel into an understandably defensive posture because some “Christian” told them that God does not love them. I know that Christianity doesn’t work for everyone. There are many other ways to find inner peace and your own personal truth, but, for those who choose to follow the path of Christianity, being hateful and bigoted in the name of God is wrong on every level imaginable.

The right-wing freight train has run off the frigging tracks, off a cliff, into quicksand and is on fire. This video says everything about the current status of the conservative movement in the US. Conservatives, the gift that keeps on giving side splitting laughter. That being said, I still wouldn’t rule them out.

TNG Featured Photo

A few minutes after I took this picture, it stopped raining, and the sun came out. Everything was wet and reflecting the sunlight like the whole world was a kaleidoscope. Adrian was standing next to me, and we were on a date–one of the first in our journey toward reconciliation. Back when we originally started dating, I introduced him to one of my favorite movies, “Philadelphia Story,” with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. The following summer he took me to the Kennedy Center to see it on the big screen, and the day I took this photo we were on our way to see the Katherine Hepburn exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery, together. Since then, I’ve met my new nephew, and he is amazing. I was able to introduce my oldest nephew to Speed Racer. Thank God! I finally found someone else to watch with me. My brilliant niece thought it was funny that Uncle Ed didn’t know the capitals of the foreign countries she was studying in school. This photo represents everything that happened between Adrian and me leading up to the separation. It rained hard, so hard you couldn’t see from one end of the block to the other. Then the rain stopped. The sun broke through the clouds, and I had my family back.

Spring Brings Marriage Equality

There has already been a ripple effect, and other states are now looking at the strong language that came out of the Iowa supreme court. It’s so strong that it almost seems like the Iowa justice as throwing “shade.” Folks, this is what real leadership looks like, “Since territorial times, Iowa has given meaning to [the equal protection] provision, striking blows to slavery and segregation, and recognizing women’s rights. The court found the issue of same-sex marriage comes to it with the same importance as the landmark cases of the past.” Now what? Y’all think y’all can hang with Iowa? Bring it!

The internet is one of the best things to happen to free speech since the printing press, but not for the reasons you might suspect. Because of the internet, any whack job with a $400 computer and a dial up connection can post their lunacy for all the world to see. This video is supposed to be in support of the Second Amendment, but take a look. Does it make you think there should be more guns out there? I know it’s meant to humorous, and it is. It’s funny because it is probably having the opposite effect on most viewers than the one the guy who posted it hoped it would have.

We Are Our Own Oppressors, Part II

The right is openly laughing in the faces of the LGBT community as they systematically eviscerate our rights. They are no longer going after our ability to exercise those rights. Their current campaign is designed to remove the actual right from existence.

We do not have to sit by quietly and watch. As a community, we have the power to change the course of our future. You have to understand that we have not even tapped into our full potential, yet, in the face of overwhelming adversity, we are still here.
