Cinespastic, Culture, Film »

The other day I was watching The Birdcage, a movie that I have loved since seeing in at the theaters nearly 15 years ago. Based on the French film La Cage aux Folles (which is also quite entertaining), the American adaptation brought together the classic comedy duo of Nichols and May, with Mike Nichols directing, and Elaine May writing the screenplay. I am a big fan of Mike Nichols, as he has directed some of my favorite movies (The Graduate, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Working Girl- just for starters).

Civil Rights, Friday Staff Survey »

This week was a huge win for the gay community, as the District of Columbia started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The District saw its first gay marriages, striking joy in the hearts of many, and anger in the hearts of a few.

But despite all this happiness, I can’t help but wonder: are our priorities in the right place? I asked the TNG staff to respond to the following question:

ENDA, DADT, SSM (same sex marriage), Oh My! With so many things to struggle for, is the queer rights movement focusing on the right things? Or will any success in any arena help further the cause in the long run? What do you think should be the priority for the queer/LGBT rights movement?

Read below to see what they had to say on the topic.

Culture, Music, Song of the Day »

Today’s song of the day is the most aggressive and polarizing thing I will ever post, but the track is fucking good – trust. Captain Ahab are a duo from LA and they know how to party. Their shows consist of both dudes running around sing-screaming their lyrics while humping members of the audience and having an all around good time. Sure there are many party bands out there, but none do it with the general fuck all of Captain Ahab.

Television »

If you haven’t yet read about “The Marriage Ref” negating all the good vibes Jerry Seinfeld sent out into syndication, then I suggest you scrap who you’re following on Twitter right now and start over. It’s an awful, awful show. Awful.

But before you lapse back into refrains of “I’m on Team Coco”, consider this curveball – maybe, just maybe, on an upcoming episode the Ref will have to tell one lesbian that seven dogs is plenty, and that her wife is right to protest the purchase of an eighth.
