Media: Dude-Mag Recognizes Model’s Hotness, Handles it Poorly
Lame-ass macho Pravda rag FHM surprised no one recently by sinking to new depths of strident homophobia and transphobia. The dude-mag named androgynous male model Andrej Pejic as number 98 on its ‚Äú100 Sexiest Women in the World‚ÄĚ list for 2011, and explained their nomination in terms generously described as ‚Äúignorant‚ÄĚ:
Andrej’s nomination page has been taken down (‚ÄúDoh,‚ÄĚ says the website), but fortunately Alicia Swann grabbed a screenshot so we can all marvel at the bare-chested hate that modern media still deems acceptable to direct toward individuals who don‚Äôt fit into the strictures of traditional gender roles.¬† The only thing that prompts me to ask, ‚ÄúPass the sick bucket,‚ÄĚ is that this type of incident, though notable in its boldness, is far from the exception.
I wrote an article about male androgyny in modern fashion that discussed the ‚ÄúPejic Phenomenon” and offered hope that we may be moving as a society toward a more fluid concept of gender. Unfortunately, as more and more individuals dare to live their lives outside of the 1950s concept of what a man or woman is, we‚Äôre bound to see the boorish, unimaginative, and terrified voices of the status quo raise louder in protest.
We don’t need to be silent in our disapproval, though. You can find ways to contact FHM here, and the editor of the Sexiest Woman list’s name is Stuart Hood. His twitter handle is @stuhood2, and if you’d like to tweet your concern here’s a suggested message under 140 characters:
@stuhood2 Happy you find Pejic as sexy as we do, but sorry that recognizing these emotions makes you hate yourself. Good luck with that.
