Politics: TNG Welcomes GetEqual!
Starting today, May 16, GetEqual’s blog –the official outlet for their online media presence, and the premier source of the latest information regarding their actions and advocacy work– will be hosted in the TNG domain, accessible from the home page by way of the “Partners” tab, and at the following URL: http://thenewgay.net/getequal .
Founded in May 2010, GetEqual’s fiercely independent political style has been impressing us here at TheNewGay – and afflicting the comfortable in the gay mainstream – for nearly a year now. And we’ve done more than just tweet and crosslink our support: it was just last year that Editor-in-Chief Zack Rosen went to jail for his participation in a GetEqual action in the US Capitol.
That history of involvement, and the resonance between GetEqual’s mission and our own, makes us that much more excited to take this next step in our three-year journey, continuing the important work of building a home space for all the folks who fall between the cracks of conventional LGBT politics, culture, and life. In Zack’s (now unincarcerated) words:
“GetEqual is an organization that sprang from the minds and actions of LGBTQ individuals who had had enough, both of discrimination and of an activist culture that often seems to unite against those interested in pursuing direct action that does not get the rare approval of the community-at-large. Risking criticism and organizational ostracization, the good folks behind GetEqual understand the power held by diverse, invested and talented individuals. By pursuing an activism model based on inclusion and results, even if it goes against the institutional grain, GetEqual is uniquely suited for a partnership with The New Gay. As two organizations unconcerned with “The Way Things Are,” they can bridge the worlds of online and real-world community building to mutually support each others’ missions.”
To the folks at GetEqual whose grit, smarts, and courage have built a nationally-recognized organization from scratch in a little over 14 months: Welcome aboard. We’re honored, and proud, to be a part of your work from now on.
