GetEqual: America’s Role in Uganda’s “Kill the Gays” Bill
Is it any wonder that this bill continues to rear its ugly head?
While much of the world is paying attention — and rightly so — to the piece of legislation in Uganda that would permit the death penalty as punishment for homosexuality, very few people are paying attention to why this legislation continues to come up. Despite being caught in legislative limbo since 2009, the bill continues to move through Parliament. But why?
Chiefly because of American financial and religious support. American evangelicals have stoked the fires in Uganda, creating a national frenzy over homosexuality that has created ridiculousness like Martin “Eat Da Poo Poo” Ssempa’s attempts to “educate” Ugandans.
The extent to which American evangelical groups are influencing the Ugandan debate has been documented in great detail by Jeff Sharlett, Rachel Maddow, and others. But the advocacy community is largely staying away from the American connection. That’s about to change.
GetEQUAL DC is committed to ensuring that the American connection to this Ugandan legislation is brought to light, and that activists have clear ways to push back on the immense power that “The Family” — the American-based evangelical group supporting the firestorm in Uganda — is exerting here and abroad. Stay tuned to GetEQUAL DC’s Facebook page for more details — there will be a lot of work in the coming months if we’re to keep the LGBT community in Uganda safe from the religion-based bigotry that American groups continue to export.
