Song of the Day: Poor But Sexy, “Hotter Than A Poptart”
DC’s music scene isn’t what is was in the heyday of Dischord, and though that was an incredible time, there is no reason to go back to it. Not when bands are exploring other styles and making weirder and wilder music on a daily basis. This past weekend I attended the second of three homecoming Dismemberment plan shows, and Saturday night’s opener was one of the biggest surprises I’ve seen live. DC’s Poor But Sexy, that features D-Plan’s Jason Caddell and Eric Axelson (live), as well as David Brown and Brandon Kalber who played with D-Plan leader Travis Morrison in his solo outfit The Hellfighters, take white-boy funk to new heights. Incorporating everything from Yatch rock, to blue-eyed soul and go-go, Poor But Sexy make an interesting mix for fans of Eli Paperboy Reed and Francis and the Lights. Their live show swelled the five-piece band to upwards of eight with two female back-up singles super reminiscent of the Dirty Projectors. Truly they are one of the most fun bands I’ve seen live. On February 15th the band will release their debut record, Let’s Move In Together and today’s song of the day “Hotter Than A Poptart” is the first single. The track is super funky and even has a call and response part towards the end that is super fun live. The band have a few more live dates coming up, so if you get a chance check them out and take a listen to the track below.
