Action: Protestors Detained on Video in Portrait Gallery

This post was submitted by Daniel Escoto

A lot of buzz has been going on around town ever since the Smithsonian Institute decided to remove David Wojnarowicz’s work “A Fire in My Belly” from the National Portrait Gallery. So much buzz, that protestors were actually inside of the museum and were detained by police (and there’s a video to boot).

Mike Blasenstein and Mike Iacovone, after hearing about the censorship of the exhibit, decided to create a little exhibit of their own. With an iPad playing the short film around his shoulders, Mike B. stood silent at the entrance to the “Hide/Seek” exhibit with flyers available for the general public. However, whenever someone would decide to take a flyer, security would come in and stop them.

After a little bit of time, security took action. To see for yourself, watch the video below and the accompanying article. They’re not the only ones, either: A larger and more usual protest was held outside of the Transformer Gallery (where the banned artwork was originally held) on Dec. 3 with about 100 people.
