Film: Mr. Cleo Sez Fags, Maybe Don’t Beware This Movie?

This post was submitted by Zack Rosen

Mr. Cleo here again, TNG’s resident Jewish mystic. I spent the last two days eating gefilte fish in a sweatlodge (i.e. the B’Nai Brith sauna) and am leaking prescience from both ends. And, in a strange turn of events, the outlook is good! I Love You Philip Morris appears to be a movie about a prison romance between Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor and I am actually excited about its release. Mostly because there is no “boohoo” element to the story. No tragic coming out, no HIV, no bashing.

Refreshingly, Jim Carrey is proud of who he is, has sex that is neither tender nor candle-lit, and actually has some agency. Gay people in movies tend to either be flawless martyrs or tragic caricatures. I’ve seen enough sexless gay best friends to really appreciate what this movie might be doing.

    Dear Jewish mystic aka Zack,

I think both of these films don’t meet your hopes for non-flawed gay characters, but please see the Israeli film Walk on Water and the just-released-on-DVD UK film Clapham Junction.

I also listened to your interview on Vermont gay radio, lauding Savagely handsome Dan for his advice columns and vlogs, I,too, love his advice, particularly about relationships, but I would add a name to those who help us celebrate our unadorned bodies, and that is yours.

Finally, under ‘holy inappropriate’, I’d like to say I subscribed to TNG after seeing your ‘ are you just glad to see me or…’ pix, but you actually had me at your red and white tank top with winning smile picture.

I cannot wait to see “I Love you Phillip Morris” simply because of Ewan McGregor playing a gay character… my dream come true!

But besides that, two huge MALE actors portraying gay men in a COMEDY is a pretty big deal. I think Carrey and McGregor are going to be amazing and, who knows, change the opinions of many right-winged, close-minded, people of the GOP?

    One can be hopeful, right?
