Music: Mr. Cleo sez “Fags, Beware This Song.”

This post was submitted by Zack Rosen

Hey TNG, it’s Mr. Cleo again, TNG’s resident Jewish mystic. The trailer for Burlesque got my matzoh sense a-tingling last week, and its happening again from the above teaser clip of Lady Gaga’s upcoming single/album “Born This Way.” Exempting any feelings I have about Ms. Gaga’s place in gay culture (which are numerous, and irrelevant here) I can tell you this: Lady Gaga + Whitney Houston’s singing style = a song that will be utterly inescapable in all avenues of gay life. Potentially until the day you die. If this song does what I think/fear it might do, it will grating, saccharine and as ubiquitious in male gay life as santorum.

I know that at this time members of our community need all the positive messages they can get. And I do give Gaga props for catering to the gay community at a time when many other queer artists bristle at being called “a queer artist.” But I’m looking forward to the next thirty years of my life and imagining this song being played ad nauseum at coffee shops, or getting a dance remix that will blare at my gym, and at gay clubs, and on the next season of Glee, or just kinda being in the background for my every personal milestone, and I’m preemptively annoyed.

So consider this a warning. There is a very good chance that the next month or so of your life will be the last month that you won’t be hearing it everywhere. Even Elton John has endorsed it, apparently while on a break from playing the weddings of known homophobes. Might I suggest stopping by the local Sharper Image store and buying noise cancelling headphones?
