TNG Interview: Corin Tucker Talks Tours, Twilight & Taste

Submission by Kaysey, TNG contributor

I didn’t discover the music of Sleater-Kinney until I was a senior in college. By that time the band was already on hiatus, destroying my dream of screaming along to “Entertain” at one of their shows. When I heard that Corin Tucker was releasing an album with her solo project, The Corin Tucker Band, my dream was reignited. If I can’t see the original three at least I can experience Corin’s powerful singing voice firsthand.

Corin’s album 1,000 Years was released on October 5th and she is currently on tour supporting it. She took a few minutes out of her busy touring schedule to answer some questions for The New Gay.

The New Gay: How has life been since Sleater-Kinney’s hiatus began in 2006?

Corin Tucker: Quite busy – I’m a mom of two now, happily so. I also have a part time job in web development so I’ve got a lot on my plate.
TNG: How did the Corin Tucker Band begin? What inspired your return to the studio?

CT: I played a benefit show in early 2009 that was a benefit for Reading Frenzy in Portland. I played a couple of the songs with Seth and Julianna from the Golden Bears. Killrockstars asked if I was interested in doing a record, and things snowballed from there.

TNG: You have described 1,000 Years as “more of a middle-aged mom record.” How has your songwriting changed from previous Sleater-Kinney records?

CT: I think my songwriting process is basically the same, but I took more time to finish each song and make it a complete story. I usually write small amounts at a time and carve out the song as the melody or lyrics come. Sometimes it all comes at once.

TNG: Do you feel that motherhood has dramatically changed your songwriting?

CT: No, but it has changed my time management skills! Everything is scheduled, so I have to work in time for writing.

TNG: Has it changed the kinds of music you are drawn to?

CT: I think my taste has grown a bit wider as I’ve gotten older, but I’ve always enjoyed a lot of different stuff including some traditional country and folk.

TNG: Are you looking forward to touring again?

CT: I am, I am so looking forward to playing these shows.

TNG: Are there certain aspects of the touring lifestyle that you miss?

CT: I miss performing but not all the travel.

TNG: Do you feel that your fan base has shifted over time?

CT: I’m not sure, that is a good question.

TNG: What does the future have in store? More with the Corin Tucker Band? A Sleater-Kinney reunion?

CT: I’m not sure but I’m hopeful that I’ll make more music in the future.

TNG: I read that you’re a fan of the Twilight series, so, Team Edward or Team Jacob? Why?

CT: Edward! I am a romantic at heart, I guess.
