Chicago Fringe Festival is a 5 day comedy festival is a brand new festival that not only has no artistic director but selects performers (half locals, half out of towners) by lottery, features comedy, dreama, dance, solo and burlesque and is more interactive with nightly after parties, live music, and a between performance alfresco hangout called Fringe Central. The 32nd annual Chicago Jazz Festival is the longest running of the city’s lakefront music festivals. For more than 30 years, the Chicago Jazz Festival has been a Labor Day weekend tradition. Know for its artistic creativity, the Chicago Jazz Festival promotes awareness and appreciation for all form of jazz through quality live musical performances. The festival’s mission is to showcase Chicago’s vast jazz talent alongside national and international artists to encourage and educated a jazz audience of all ages. This year’s performers include: Artist-in-Residence: Nicole Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band, Rene Marie, The Either/Orchestra, Kurt Elling and more. Festival locations include the Chicago Cultural Center, Millennium Park and Grant Park, Jackson Blvd. & Columbus Dr., free, all weekend, 12pm.
Smart hetero and queer singles show they’ve got game when Nerds at Heart kicks off Labor Day weekend with Nerd Fest, a fourth anniversary appreciation party featuring multi-genre entertainment stations and a special advance admission price of $10. Unattached smarties mingle at stations throughout the bar featuring activities led by guest experts. Entertainment includes board, role playing, card, video and Wii games, plus special music and comedy performances. Includes a cocktail and ticket giveaways. Holiday Club, 4000 N. An enigmatic young woman from Dublin finds herself the center of attention at a local pub. Pints in hand, the local barflies recount ghostly tales of the supernatural to impress and entertain her, but it is the visitor herself who relates the most unsettling story of all. Conor McPherson wrote the hauntingly beautiful and humorous play The Weir at the age of 26, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Play, and the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright. North Coast Music Festival is a 3 day festival featuring the live shows of the Chemical Brothers, Lupe Fiasco, Mody, Boys Noize, Benga, De La Soul and many other acts of various genres. Union Park, 1501 W. Randolph St., $40, 4pm.
Join Equality Illinois and Chicago NOW supporters and friends for their September First Friday networking event. The mission of the Chicago Chapter of the National Organization for Women is to be Chicago’s feminist resource in the areas of economic equity, women’s health, reproductive freedom, ending violence against women, and LGBTQ rights. In addition, Chicago NOW takes action through several key projects such as, but not limited to, panel discussions, essay contests, and fundraisers. The chapter also participates in community outreach, political activities, and political endorsements. For a $10 donation to the Equality Illinois PAC, you receive two drink tickets and a ticket for a door prize drawing.
