Yes, Master: Give A Man A Mask……

This post was submitted by Master Aiden

One of the things about BDSM that people want to discuss is the whole deal with masks and pseudonymns. What makes masks so appealing? And what’s up with the silly names?

It’s not about deception–it’s about tradition and transformation.

Masks are symbols. They transform the face with different colors, lines, and shapes that edge closer to creating another person through appearance and in order to communicate a particular idea, tone, or personality. Masks are sometimes worn in session depending on the tastes of the Master or Mistress and on the requests of certain slaves. Both Tops and bottoms may choose to wear masks in order to tap into their alternative personaes.

One of the standard traditions in the bondage world is choosing another name for yourself as either a Dom/Domme or submissive. It seperates you from the cares and inhibitions of the “regular” side of your life. You’re, literally, a new person with a new name and seperate identity. You can do more, explore more, and express yourself in ways that may seem foreign to the rest of your life. Stepping into a dungeon, you’re no longer the mild-mannered gentleman or lady. Of course, the standard social rules are still intact in many ways but you’re now a different entity with possibly different interests and identifications from the self that you’re more typically aquainted with.

Needless to say, most BDSM lifestylers are aware that this sort of play is still considered taboo to many people and having a pseudonym is a way of blurring your regular life from the shadowy world of whips and ropes. Even though we live in a continually progressive society, there’s still a certain social upkeep that we have to maintain on some levels and masks/pseudonyms help construct those private walls. Slave names and Master/Mistress names can also give an idea to scenesters as to what kind of personality you have as a Top or a bottom. For instance, my name (Master Aiden) was chosen deliberately to hint at a certain level of practicality and realism that suits my personae as a Dom. It’s not a bombastic name–it’s believable and somewhat traditional; modern and old-fashioned. Like me.

Masks and play names allow a sense of freedom and newness when stepping into the bondage world. For many people in the scene, anonymity is the one ingredient that allows them to explore their true desires.
