This weekend electro invades the Castro at a popular gay bar while literary artsy-fartsy geeks celebrate the latest issue of Wholphin in the Mission. Sandra Bernhard helps the Jews get their party started on Saturday and Honey Soundsystem closes the weekend veiled in a shroud of mystery.
Friday
- Ejector @ The Lookout. Self-described “glam electro pop duo” Ben Holder and Ricky Terry bring their outfit called Ejector to the Lookout this Friday. Expect a 5-song set in support of their new album called On the Pages. T-shirts and CDs will be on sale at the show. Details: Show starts at 9 PM, $4 cover at The Lookout on 3600 16th Street and Market.
- Wholphin: Selections from Issue 11. From indie publishing house McSweeney’s, quarterly DVD magazine Wholphin screens selections from issue 11. Expect “…a lovelorn plastic bag in search of his Maker at the Pacific Trash Vortex, a shocking documentary about a Russian finishing school for the modern-day gold digger, the Sundance 2010 Short Award winner, a time-traveling Viking odyssey, the most humiliating break up of all time, a documentary set the only checkpoint between India and Pakistan where 20,000 people gather daily to celebrate, the world’s most dangerous jog, plus Dock Ellis, Reggie Jackson, Melissa Auf der Maur, Yogi Bear, and much more.” Details: Starts at 8 PM at Artists’ Television Access on 992 Valencia Street and 21st Street.
Saturday
- DAWN 2010 @ The California Academy of Sciences. Get in touch with your inner mensch at DAWN 2010, “a late-night Cultural Arts Festival and Celebration of the Jewish holiday Shavuot at the California Academy of Sciences.” Includes many performers such as readings by celebrated Jewish authors like Gary Shteyngart, musicians from local indie rock bands like Howlin’ Rain and Comets On Fire, and a headlining performance by gay icon Sandra Bernhard. Details: Tickets are $20 and can only be bought in advance; starts at 7:30 PM at the California Academy of Sciences on 55 Music Concourse Drive.
Sunday
- HONEY WITH ?????? This Sunday, Honey Soundsystem’s guest DJ is top secret. Could it be: A) a two-spirited wraith that was once the artist Andy Warhol and the DJ Larry Levan and feeds off human souls; B) resident bartender Marina; C) an IBM 701 Supercomputer built in 1953 that’s been custom re-purposed for this event by the artist Moby; or D) a non-American DJ / Producer on his third visit to San Francisco? I’m gonna bet D, but you’ll have to RSVP if you want to find out. Details: Music starts spinning at 10 PM at Paradise Lounge on 1501 Folsom Street and 11th Street.
