Wondering if anyone else noticed the anti-gay lyrics in “Independent Kill”? The relevant lyrics are:

“Why the hell are all these nigg*s dancing with each other?”

“He’s rockin a purse and wearin the same size pants, these lame-*ss nigg*s independent bitches, too, they get on the floor more than independent bitches do”

“And I’m sick of watching nigg*s switch their hips like bitches, hit that booty doin’ dips like bitches. Thinking they were perms wearin flips like bitches, then they gonna be wearin thongs gettin tipped like bitches.”

Her loose usage of the “bitches” makes her intent somewhat unclear, but it seems pretty clear she has negative sentiments toward what are presumably gay men.

This is disappointing on a number of levels.

    1. Many of La Roux’s fans are gay. Given that she had her hands in the production of this mixtape, I’m somewhat let down she would condone including these lyrics.

    2. Same can be said for Diplo and Switch, although it does surprise me somewhat less.

    3. Shouldn’t the New Gay consider mentioning this in their promotion of this mix? This site is about creating a space for the “new” gay community, yet the writers are promoting music that clearly attacks parts of that community. I imagine that whoever posted this didn’t notice the anti-gay lyrics but perhaps it should be addressed on the site? If my interpretation of the lyrics is correct, posting this seems a little bit hypocritical…

I think she is talking about how it is trendy for men to dress in tighter pants and have girlish hair now. When I hear the lyrics it makes me think she is making fun of American “hipsters” who make up alot of major lazer and la roux fans in the us.
However I don’t really know what to make of the lyric about men dancing together.
The thought of either of two of my favorite groups being anti gay is extremely disappointing.
I do still love this song though and think it should be an anthem for all my independent bitches, male or female, gay or straight <3

No you guys, the subtext is undeniably anti-gay and it’s pretty lame because the beat goes soooo hard and I love the song right up until she starts bashing the guys… I mean, you can’t insult stereotypically more feminine behavior in men so fucking aggressively without being homophobic and misogynist. She takes it too far beyond “tight pants on men are not a turn off.” She even says “faggots” in the background of the line “these new breed niggas make me wonder…” I do feel pretty hypocritical being so pissed off by “faggot” considering she’s okay with “nigga” and “bitch;” there are obviously other layers of offensive bullshit in the song. Soooo gross.

Correction: meant to write “tight pants on guys are a turn off,” durr.

Yeah, definitely anti-gay. More so though, i think her confusion is comical. Not sure if it is meant to be or if this is just my defense mechanism. It almost sounds like she’s jealous of all the gay men stealing attention. I like that she feels competition there. A little crossing over these imaginary lines is always good!
