Los Angeles: Long Beach Pride
Event Details: Long Beach Pride - Long Beach: Friday, May 14, Saturday, May 15Saturday, May 15, Sunday, May 16Sunday, May 16
Every year, City of Long Beach has the distinct honor of holding the first Pride celebration of the season! And what a pride it is…. Long Beach’s two-day celebration is, in fact, the largest pride in the country behind San Francisco and New York (yes, it’s true–we trump LA, Chicago, Boston, and DC). And its seaside location gives Long Beach Pride a uniquely festiveĀ atmosphere that few other prides offer.
So what’s in store?
Friday, May 14th
The Pink Party in Promenade Square (at 1st St). Downtown, Long Beach. Long Beach’s Jewels hosts an outdoor kickoff party with DJs and a drag diva contest. The $10 entry fee benefits the LB Center’s youth programs. Starts at 7 pm
Saturday, May 15
Day one of the Festival! There are lots of vendors and dance areas set up around Shorline Park. Musical acts include Niko Jaquez, Amanda Perez, and FLOCK OF SEAGULLS!!!!!
Sunday, May 16
The annual parade starts at Lindero and Ocean, and proceeds along the bluff tops to Alamitos. Enjoy ocean breezes and festive floats along the whole route!
This year’s honorees include: Michael Barber, owner of the World Famous Falcon bar; out city council members Gerrie Schipskie and Robert Garcia, who helped pass the city’s Equal Benefits Ordinance; and hetero ally state senator Alan Lowenthal, best known for his efforts to improve the environmental impact from the Port of Long Beach.
Because this is an election year, I wonder which candidates will show up? Prop-8 loving Meg Whitman? Pro-gay marriage Republican Tom Campbell? Barbara Boxer, who was recently heckled by anti-DADT protestors?
Day two of the festival features Billy Dortch (who’s a hottie model as well as a singer), Gabe Lopez, and ‘Diva Dynasty’ featuing Martha Wash, Crystal Waters, Linda Clifford, and Allison Iraheta.
