There are lots of chances to dress up and support important causes this weekend in Salt Lake City.
Friday
- QSU Gaybutante Ball. A Masquerade Ball hosted by the University of Utah’s Queer Student Union 7pm-10pm; $5 suggested donation at the door. Students, former students and the community are invited. This is QSU’s biggest event of the year, so it’s not to be missed. Details: Gallivan Center downtown (239 S Main St) For more info: utahqsu@gmail.com
- Whimsical Women. An all-women show featuring local & traveling comics, slam poets, storytellers and more! Arrive early for food and good seats. Details: 8:00 PM-9:30 PM at the Sponge Club (380 W 200 S) $10 cover, Doors open at 7:30, Ages 18+.
- 16th Annual Dykes in Drag Contest. Who says gender presentation is fixed? This contest at the lesbian bar Paper Moon will feature butch women being presented as their normal butch selves and then they will be taken back to the transformation area where they will have 1 hour to make themselves into the prettiest lesbian on the block. - Halfway to Halloween Monster Ball. Costumed event that will be hosted by Miss Vega Starr. There will of course be a costume contest which boasts VIP tix to the 30 Seconds to Mars (May 8) for the winner. Club Pure is one of the premier gay nights in SLC. Details: 9pm-2am; 235 N 500 W; Club Pure; 18+/21+ to drink.
Saturday
- Utah Musician’s Breakfast Club. What if the Breakfast Club had consisted of only musicians? The Utah Musicians Breakfast Club aims to discover that answer themselves with monthly meet and greets at local places throughout SLC and the greater valley. One part social and one part networking, it’s a great way to meet other local musicians and enjoy good food. This month’s meeting will be at Café Marmalade, 361 N 300 W, at 11 am.
- And the Banned Slammed On by Plan B theater. This is one of SLC’s most talked about fundraisers and not-to-be-missed local theater event. The night features five 10-minute plays created in 24 hours based on incidents of censorship in Utah over the past year. This year the show will be hosted by Bill Allred (X 96) and Doug Fabrizio (KUER) and will have special guests Matt Aune and Derek Jones, the Main Street Plaza Kissing Criminals. Details: Rose Wagner Center, 138 W 300 S, 8pm-9:30pm.
- Hip Hop Laudanum. This event features some of SLC’s best local hip-hop and is headlined by Raw X-Tract, a project by local musician/poet Ami Hanna. Details: $5 cover for a night of lyrical epiphanies. Batters Up 1700 S Main St. For more info on Raw X-Tract and to download the free EP, click here.
- Guadalupe Schools Fundraising Dance/Cinco de Mayo Fiesta. This fundraiser will help support one of only two charter schools in the state where economically disadvantaged children make up more than 90% of the population. Details: Rico Warehouse 545 W 700 S 8pm-midnight. $15 entry includes 2 drink tickets and light appetizers. For more information on the event call Guadalupe Schools at 801-531-6100.
Sunday
- Sunday OUT Loud! Food? Check. Entertainment? Check. Good Cause? Check. This event, sponsored by Equality Utah will have all of the above requirements plus great company! A portion of the food proceeds will go to benefit Equality Utah, which is a grassroots, statewide political advocacy organization working on behalf of LGBT people to secure equality and fairness. Details: Acme Burger (275 S 200 W); 3:00 pm-9:00 pm.
Monday
- Adrian and the Sickness. Burt’s Tiki Lounge is one of Salt Lake City’s best music/dive bars. Adrian and the Sickness will be hitting up Burt’s and playing a set featuring good rock/pop anthems. The Austin based band is led by Adrian Connor, who’s well known for her work with the AC/DC tribute band Hell’s Belles. Details: Burt’s Tiki Lounge (726 S State), 8pm $7 entry.
