Erotica?: Hipster Fantasies from a “Wistful Pervert”

This post was submitted by Topher Burns

I got emailed early one morning last week to ask if I was interested in covering a hardcore short soon to be released on nakedsword.com.  I figured “hey, let’s get this day STARTED,” and agreed to review the video.

Now I’m stuck in an awkward position, because I want to write a love letter to the video, and don’t want to sully it with words like hardcore, porn, and NSFW.

I Want Your Love” is Travis Matthews’ full-length movie version of his “In Their Room” web series via Butt Magazine.  Before I checked the video series out online a friend described the series of clips as chances for hipsters to talk about themselves and then beat off for the camera.

Though certainly Matthews’ “In Their Room” clips can be described as indulgent, this stems from their reliance on self-disclosure.   In each of the videos an Urbanite man lies down on his bed and tells you a little about himself.  Spliced into the narrative is footage of him doing his own private stuff (flipping through magazines, listening to music, playing with his dog).  “In Their Room” is intimate and honest.

So how can clips that feel more like This American Life vignettes be made into scripted porn?  Don’t ask me.  I don’t think they can.  Because I just can’t bring myself to call “I Want Your Love” porn.

This is by no means because I harbor any sort of feelings of ill will toward pornography.  Love the stuff!  Instead I just found myself connecting to Matthews’ video in ways that porn can’t make happen.

Beside the honesty with which the video portrays gay sex, the difference for me is the subject matter.  Porn plays with external fantasies (taboos, physical perfection, hot pirates), while “I Want Your Love” toys with the world of internal fantasy (“What if this guy really likes me?”).

What sticks with me from “I Want Your Love” are the perfect razor-edge moments of suspense that make real life so memorable.  While watching the video I found my mind running in familiar first-time-with-him channels.  Insecurities bubble up with hope and lust, and simmer at the surface while both parties act cool.

Plus, that shit was hot.  I’m always for watching two cute hipsters go at it.

I don’t know if the full-length movie will sink under the weighty preponderance of so much “real-life honesty”, or stray into cheesy pornoland, but I’m looking forward to finding out.  In the meantime it’s great to know that I have options when I get a yen for modern/quaint slice-of-life video moments that leave me saying “Ahhh” for plenty of reasons.

I think that it stands apart from porn because it isn’t trying to capture a fantasy, but instead is trying to capture a real experience.

I totally agree with Raphael, I also feel like it shows another type of gay guys. I can relate and see myself in these characters
