Song of the Day: MGMT, “Flash Delirium”
Oh MGMT. Remember when you were actually named The Management, and you were just two dudes going to Wesleyan playing parties? Well, flash forward half a decade later and MGMT are hot-shit Grammy Award nominated artists. Love them or hate them, MGMT are about to return with their weirdest work yet. On April 13th MGMT are set to release Congratulations, an album recorded with Sonic Boom (the non Jason Pierce dude from Spaceman 3). The record is to have “no singles” and is supposed to flow like an album.
Congratulations is also supposedly inspired by Lady Gaga, but after listening to today’s SOTD, “Flash Delirium,” I can’t hear it. This track is a mixing bowl of influences, reading a lot like the “favortie music” secontion on an online dating profile. Not only does it give nods to Beatlesque pop, modern rock, hippie music and just about everything you can think of sans country and rap. The tempos change, flutes are added, and vocals are bent, and if you listen to it while staring at the crazy fucking cover, you might think you were high. This defiantly isn’t “Kids,” “Electric Feel,” or “Time to Pretend,” but it is worlds better than the rest of the tracks on their debut (because we all know the three mentioned songs were the only ones worth listening to).

The artwork for Congratulations is just as crazy. Check out this instructional scratch-off video.

Their debut was actually Climbing To New Lows as The Management, and all of their first album is pure gold, not just trendy catchy singles.
