Event Details: LA Weekend Preview 3/12-3/14: Happy Pi Day! - :

Celebrate Pi Day on Sunday! Please be irrational. Enjoy music at museums in Long Beach and LA, see sexy stormtroopers, and take in a bunch of fun art shows.

Thursday, March 11

Music and evening fun continues at After Dark at the Long Beach Museum of Art (2300 E. Ocean Blvd). There are four new exhibitions to explore and live music from Familiar Trees, The Commotions, and DJ Hits & Mrs. Happy Hour Prices for Food and Drinks at $4 and a digital photo booth courtesy of Keshot Verde. Ride your bike to the event and receive a voucher good for one complimentary appetizer or beverage as we support the City’s Bike Friendly Initiative. Plus enter for an opportunity to win a new bike! As always, the LBMA grounds provides a beautiful way to spend an evening and appreciate the Long Beach shoreline.

Friday, March 12

Back by popular demand, the girls of Courtney Cruz’s Devil’s Playground return to the Music Box at the Henry Fonda (6126 Hollywood Blvd) to bring you Star Warz Burlesque. See what Boba Fett’s been hiding ‘neath the mask and armor.

Saturday, March 13

The Getty has the second show in its series– Saturday Nights (formerly Saturdays of the 405)–with the Living Sisters tonight. Reservations are available now, and will probably run out well before the show.

Karl Haendel's "Sir Ernest Shackleton and All the Clocks in My House"

Feeling artsy? There are several great opennings going on today. Karl Haendel will be showing at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Art Projects (6006 Washington Blvd, Culver City). The exhibition consists of three groups of work – a drawings series chronicling the Shackleton Transatlantic Expedition to the Antarctic in 1914, a smaller series of drawings featuring all the clocks in the artist’s house, and a book entitled “Karl’s Little Red Book”, made of photocopies on red paper including texts and images. Robert Melee  will be showing at David Kordansky Gallery (3143 S. La Cienega Blvd, Unit A). Melee’s beer bottle cap accentuates and undermines compositions (which sometimes include other found objects) and color relationships.  The Mostly Sculpture Show at Sea and Space Exploration (4755 York Blvd) in Eagle Rock. This show features works by six artists that are unified by their emphasis on process and innovation.  Each artist engages with specific materials in a poetry of making.

The Armory Center for the Arts (145 N Raymond Ave in Alhambra) celebrates its 20th Birthday with a Bash & Annual Fundraiser. This will be a cake-and-candles affair with art to spare. Make it, buy it, support it, adore it. Cocktails, glorious eats, silent and live auctions, art being made before you very eyes, and lots of opportunities to support all of your favorite Armory programs… in other words, the works. Silent auctions close at 8:15 and 8:45. Live auction starts at 9. Bring your own party hat, or purchase a most exquisite one at the door.

Check out John Waters’ classic film, Hairspray, at Devil’s Night Drive-In!  Take your buddies and your car to the second floor of the parking structure at 240 W. 4th Street in downtown LA at 6:00. Show starts at 7:30. This is a special family-friendly event, so feel free to bring the little ones.  Food provided by Angel City Derby Girls. BYOB. $10.

Sunday, March 14

If you’re out in the desert looking for wildflowers, stick around Palm Springs and check out the So So Glos at the Ace Hotel (701 E. Palm Canyon Drive). One of my favorite bands from Brooklyn are touring California, and it’ll definitely be worth the trip!
