Book Review: Dottie The Sock: How I Found My Pair

This post was submitted by Jess Five

Dottie the Sock: How I Found My Pair by Christine Gayle is a children’s book about a lesbian sock.  It is about Dottie the Sock not having a pair and going looking for her.  It is a cute tale that is geared towards young children of love, tolerance, and acceptance.

I enjoyed the story even if it was a little cliché and resembled “Are You My Mommy?” but instead of it being Mommy it is “Are you my pair?” Such a simple question leads Dottie on the quest to find her own.  It seems like everyone in Dottie’s family found their pair by looking for different things.  What worked for her family didn’t work for Dottie but she eventually found her pair in a person of color sock.

The illustrations matched the tone of the story.  They are child-like, carefree, and a simple.  They get the job done even if the backgrounds are repetitive but it fits the nature of the story.  I found the way the socks were illustrated to be quite clever – combining humans and a sock together.

I would recommend Dottie The Sock: How I Found My Pair for any young child.  When I was reading it, I could picture the book becoming a favorite of a young child and them asking the question, “Are you my pair?” alongside Dottie.
