Washington DC: Chelsea Chelsea Blah Blah
In her first show on Saturday night in DC, Chelsea Handler went where most don’t dare – female masturbation. While many of us are comfortable with the topic of male masturbation in pretty much any context, female masturbation is almost never talked about. Chelsea, however, devoted the last 15 minutes of her show to her first experiences with touching herself. Chelsea thrives on childhood memories and sex so as I’m sure you can imagine, her impressions of herself at her first sleepover humping the carpet brought the roaring audience to tears.
Unfortunately, though, it took her a while to reach this climax, if you will, and spent the first half of the show relying on racist humor and chastising the audience for cat-calling. I have read Chelsea’s first 2 books and watch her show when I can, and was giddy walking to the show – that is to say, I’m a fan, I was excited, and prepared to be blindly wooed. But while there were definitely times I was holding my sides in laughter, on the whole I was a bit disappointed, and think she fares better when she has more of a script prepared.
On the other hand, Heather McDonald, a regular on Chelsea Lately, who opened for Chelsea, was a nice surprise. Though some of her sexier jokes fell flat, overall she captured the audience with her unique ability to perfectly mimic various actors and make fun of popular tv shows, by capturing those truly funny, very human moments in life. That is a talent that she and Chelsea both share and truly thrive on when they are in their elements. And in those moments I, like Chelsea, had to hold myself to keep from peeing.
