Los Angeles: Vigil for Lawrence King

This post was submitted by raphael

Event Details: Vigil for Lawrence King - City Hall (and other locations): Friday, February 12

Two years ago, 15-year old Lawrence King was gunned down outside his middle school in Oxnard. King was a relatively flamboyant kid who wore jewelry and makeup to class, and was out in his school. His murderer, Brandon McInerney, was only 14 at the time, was tried as an adult.

School can be a brutal environment for any kid. But for LGBT youth–especially those gender-noconformists–it is lethally perilous. Although California has anti-bullying protection for students that explicitly address anti-gay bullying, several states are behind the curve (and in Iowa, Republicans are trying to defend the rights of homophobic bullies).

To mark the occasion of Lawrence King’s murder, there are several vigils planned throughout California. (To find vigils in other states, please check here.)
