San Francisco: Noise Pop 18 Day 3: Angry Young Woman
Event Details: Noise Pop 18 Day 3: Angry Young Woman - :
Yesterday was Day 3 of Noise Pop, and I think I’ve reached my threshold for crusty indie hipsters. I didn’t realize I was at my upper limits until I growled at a young photographer lady for kneeling on my jacket while trying to snap a pic of one of the bands. “Get off my jacket,” I told her rather tersely. Shocked, she immediately apologized explaining that she mistook it for the stage curtain but then said my response was rather “curt.” She then introduced herself (“Alice”) and tried to make small talk. I was just like, “Get off my fucking jacket, bitch.”
Thursday night found me at CafĂ© Du Nord on Market Street. Four bands on the bill, but I didn’t stay for the headliner, Citay, because I was tired and cranky. Another time, guys…
The first band up was Tape Deck Mountain. Slow, dirgy at times, but melodic nonetheless. These guys had a little bit of that nerd rock thing going on. Geeky, tortured, and likely every hipster girl’s dream. The drummer also played the keyboard which I thought was weird. Kind of one-note, but they did a pretty good job of milking that one note for all it was worth. I enjoyed it.
Greg Ashley of Gris Gris was up next. He surrounded himself with two glasses of red wine, a beer and a bottle of water. I thought, “Really? Is it gonna be that kind of set?” Mentally I think I hit a snooze button. Ashley didn’t acknowledge the audience at all, not even a thank you in between sets. Just him and a guitar. He was done in 4 or 5 songs. Next…
Then Scout Niblett. Angry young woman. Seriously. Sweet and disarming in between songs, but as soon as she struck the first chord on her guitar, it was all tightly gritted teeth and snarling vocals. For those of you who need to fit artists into neat categories, then you might think of her as early PJ Harvey meets Cat Power.
My favorite was any part of a song that included the drummer. Actually my favorite part was just the drummer himself because he was scruffy n’ cute (meh, I have to throw a bone to the gays…). At one point the drummer was using a metal crucible as part of his percussion. Neat.
I had to leave after that. Enough.
I do want to admit a correction from my last post. It appears that The Dodos show wasn’t sold out. But by the time I realized that tickets were still available, I had made up my mind to go see Scout Niblett instead. I don’t think that was a bad choice.
Friday: Back to Benders Bar for Hunx and His Punx. I’m looking forward to this for no other reason than Benders has Pliny the Elder and Affligem beer on tap. That and maybe Hunx will blow someone at the bar.
