This weekend marks opening of an annual Houston tradition: The Livestock Show and Rodeo. While the actual rodeo doesn’t begin until Tuesday, March 2nd, the ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run is this Saturday. Running these things is a completely new thing for me. A year ago I couldn’t run a block without getting winded. Now I’m signing up for half-marathons. Life is crazy. Even if you don’t run the 10k this weekend, or if you walk the 5k instead, there is a colossal party downtown afterward – and there better be BBQ this time! Along with the Rodeo Run, here are some other events in Houston this weekend.

Friday

• Catch a screening of 10 independent films at Freneticore Theater. Shadowbox Cinema spans the wide-eyed world of indie and underground cinema with animated doses of disillusionment, experimental uppercuts of individualism, surreal excursions, and pulsating stories that may detonate upon contact. 5102 Navigation | 7pm | $7

Saturday

• The ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run is a 5k/10k combined race that benefits the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo educational fund. 13,000 participants will run down the streets of downtown Houston leading the rodeo kickoff parade. Sunday

• While it’s true I often listen to The Pussycat Dolls’ Jai Ho on repeat while at the gym, the fact is I know very little about Indian culture and food. Fortunately, the Indian Festival of Colors is this weekend in Sugar Land! Come see HOLI 2010 at Oyster Creek Park on Sunday starting at 11am. Come dressed in white and expect people to throw red (non toxic) dye powder on you. Sounds like a GWAR concert to me. Oyster Creek Park | Hwy 6 and Settlers Way | Free Admission
