Weekend Preview: Houston Weekend Preview: Beads & Pigskin Edition

This post was submitted by Josh

Grandma? Is that you?

This is going to be one of those weekends where your liver walks out in protest. Hopefully you’ll be able to coax it back in by Monday morning for work, but you never know. How much is a black market liver these days? Galveston is a lovely little place (What’s left of it!…. Too soon?). The residents of Galveston have made a nifty little hobby out of mimicking larger cities’ big events. They have Galveston Pride – ripping off our version (and, frankly, they’ve picked a much better time of year to have it!) – and they have this version of Mardi Gras. The thing is, they usually throw an amazing party. Often giving the original event a run for its money. So if you’re up for the short drive and have a place to stay down there, check it out!

Friday

  • The 99th Annual Mardi Gras Galveston starts today and runs through February 16th. The island comes alive with 11 extravagant parades, more than 50 galas and festive events, bead throwing, exhibits, live entertainment in local clubs, and the best Gulf Coast cuisine in the world. One of the most popular annual events to take place in Texas, the event is rich with laughter, celebration and people watching. Over 250,000 people attend each year. Many of them look just like the three ladies in the picture above. Galveston Island | 22nd & Market

Saturday

  • Last Friday I went to see Rent at the Country Playhouse with very low expectations, after all, it is community theater. I ended up being blown away by great performances and an excellent live band. Naturally, I am intrigued and want to go back. They’re currently showing Pig Farm which is described like this: A parodic presentation on corporate factory farming and a group of dimwits who work one of the farms. Country Playhouse | 12802 Queensbury | Town & Country | $12-$17

Sunday

  • It’s Super Bowl Sunday! Am I even allowed to type those words? I fear a lawsuit from the NFL. Well, until the cease & desist letter arrives, I can tell you about Frank’s Annual Super Bowl Party at Guava Lamp. Each year the manager at Guava throws a fun little bash with free food and cheap drinks. This year there will be $2 longnecks and drink specials each touchdown. No cover. Guava Lamp | 570 Waugh | 21+
