Washington DC: Ticket Giveaway: Win Tickets to See Of Montreal @ The 9:30 Club

This post was submitted by Rohan

Of Montreal are a band who need no introduction. Starting as a psychedelic pop project of Kevin Barnes, Of Montreal are now an indie-funk hybrid with one of the most talked about and must see live shows. If you live in DC, well you are in luck. Of Montreal are making their return to DC’s 930 club on the 28th of January, and we have a pair of tickets to give away. All you have to do is comment your favorite Of Montreal record by Tuesday the 26th and a winner will be selected at random.

The band are currently at work on an upcoming record, which Stereogum recently featured in the Progress Report series. If that song clip is anything to be expected, their new record is going to be even filthier than their last.

Check out Zack’s interview with Of Montreal’s queer frontman from October 2008.

If you need any more motivation to see this show, here is a decent video from their last 9:30 Club show in 2008:

My favorite Of Montreal record would have to be Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer. When I first bought it a few years ago, I had been expecting something so unabashedly happy like their previous album, so naturally I was taken aback by how simply dark this one new one was. I pretty much ignored it for a few months until “The Past Is A Grotesque Animal” came up on random, and I didn’t change it immediately. Between the gradual buildup over 12 minutes, and the introduction of the wailing halfway through, it was just so epic! This is the song that got me hooked. I went back and listened to the rest of the album, and found a love for it that hadn’t been there before. Hissing Fauna was so good in my book, that had it not been for In Rainbows and Neon Bible, it would have easily become my favorite album that year. I still listen to it from time to time today, and I have a hard time not putting “Suffer for Fashion” or “A Sentence Of Sorts In Kongsvinger” on any party mix that I make.

Another vote for Hissing Fauna. It’s just chock full o’ quality songs.

Sunlandic Twins! Wraith Pinned To The Mist, Oslo In The Summertime, and Requiem For O.M.M.2 are some of the catchiest songs ever.

The Sunlandic Twins – def my favorite album… but if we’re talking single tracks, I can’t live without Spoonful of Sugar

Hissing Fauna = best Of Montreal album. Obviously.

Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? is his most mature, ambitious, and consistently interesting LP to date. Combines the most immediate aspects of pop harmony with truly violent and sinister or even depressive lyrics. The quality of the music is almost as impressive as the melody and lyrics, and hints at 70s Bowie-era experimentalism–it’s not just a visual language anymore.

Skeletal Lamping is pretty much my favorite album of all time. Skeletal lamping is more psychedelicly random than anything i have ever heard, and i really like how the songs can change so quickly and unexpectedly, Ive listened to it sooo many times and it feels like everytime, there is something new i havent noticed yet. its a very beautiful album and problably the most original sounding record i have ever heard, it is just incredibly amazing how he peiced it together from so many movements, it gives me the feel of a bizzare opera, or classical peice of some kind. i also find the lyrics very beautiful and sexy, everytime i hear For Our Elegant Caste, or plastis wafer it makes me want to have freaky sex. just listening to this album is super freaky. Hissing Fauna, Are you the Destroyer? is a close second, and one of the best albums of all time also. it is similarly psychedelic, but less random, more pop like. i think hissing fauna may be more accessable to new listeners to of montreal. This keyboards on this album kindof reminds me of DEVO, if they were taking LSD or ecstacy everyday, totally psychedelicized. both albums are great and Of montreal is problably my favorite band of all time

Hey all, so I picked a winner out of a hat and Andrew Paul Zane is the winner congrats.

BTW no one guessed my favorite of montreal record, The Gay Parade, which would’ve been an automatic win, so boo! I would’ve also gone for Satanic Panic in the Attic too.

Sorry for the losers, congrats again to Andrew Paul Zane.
