Chicago Weekend Preview: Sunny Winter Days Edition!

Not exactly clear skies but we'll take it.

 

This weekend is supposed to give us a small reprieve from the winter with some nice sunny days in the 30′s so take advantage of it with some kick ass events!

Friday

  • “I Am My Own Wife” tells the story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a 60-something transvestite who had survived both the Nazis and Communists living in a rural suburb, passing her senior years tending to an impressive hoard of 1890s collectibles. Born Lothar Berfelde, in 1928, Charlotte identified while still a teenager as a female spirit trapped in a male body, and openly cross-dressed most of her life. BoHo Theatre, 7016 N.   • MPACCT’s new play “First Words” presents a rare picture of autism in the African American community and explores how hope can distort our perceptions of reality. The Greenhouse Theatre Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave, $15, 8pm.

Saturday

  • Sappho’s Salon Lesbian/Queer Women Survivors Open Mic featuring the work of lesbian survivors and Sarah’s Circle canned food drive, featuring Deb R. Lewis and DJ SpinNikki. All lesbian and/or queer identified women who claim the mantle “survivor,” whether surviving addiction, sexual, physical or emotional abuse, homophobia, poverty, racism, ableism, or any other facet of survival is invited to bring two pages (double-spaced, please) of poetry, journal, short-short story, personal essay, or their musical instrument and a song, to share. Tonight’s featured performer is Second Story regular Deb R. Lewis. As usual, DJ SpinNikki will play an eclectic mix of music between sets. Women & Children First, 5233 N. Clark St., $7-$10, 7:30pm.
  • Harris Theater and Contempo present “Where Jazz and Contemporary Music Intersect”, a double-bill featuring important Chicago premieres and the best of living composers, cutting-edge performances by contemporary artists, and memorable appearances by jazz musicians. Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E Randolph Dr, $25 or $40, 7:30 PM.
  • Filmmaker Ron Pajak’s documentary, QUEARBORN & PERVERSION, will be shown. Co-produced by the Chicago History Museum, QUEARBORN & PERVERSION has taken ten years of research and includes eighty oral histories that have been collected, representing various demographics of the pre-liberation lesbian and gay landscape in Chicago. Interviewees include Augie Flanagan, one of the first lesbian bar owners; Studs Terkel, who reminisces about his meetings with Pearl Hart, a pioneering attorney and friend of the community; Chuck Renslow, a founding father of male beefcake photography; and Yvonne Hudson and Ernestine Medley, who reveal how they overcame racism in being accepted by their white sisters. Sunday

  • AIDS Legal Council of Chicago presents “The Disney Songbook: Children’s Songs for Grown-Ups” by Cabaret performer Justin Hayford in a fund-raiser cabaret. If you haven’t yet heard him sing “Baby Mine” from Dumbo, you owe yourself the treat. ALC works for the rights of people with HIV through direct representation, education and training, and advocacy.
