Song of the Day: Parenthetical Girls, “Evelyn McHale”
Parenthetical Girls are one of my favorite bands, and they are sure to be your new favorite. Their brand of indie pop is full of jangle and orchestration, but when they want to get weird, they do. Today’s song of the day is a track off their new full-length Privilege, “Evelyn McHale” a track described as “Bolan-ian.” The track is probably the most straightforward pop song they’ve recorded in a while, especially when compared to their 2008 highly-recommended record Entanglements. The vocals glide in an almost Will Sheff-ian (Okkervil River) way, over a sweet background that is almost doo-wop.

Privilege is actually less of a full-length and more of a project, as the records are going to be released as five vinyl EPs, with the fifth being housed in a box to collect all five records. The records are limited to editions of 500, and are hand numbered in the members’ blood, which seems to be all the rage these days. The cycle is to continue until May of 2011. The first being Privilege: Pt. 1 – On Death & Endearments which is out February 23rd.
