San Francisco: 1/4-1/7: Free Admission to Aquarium of the Bay

This post was submitted by Bryan Garcia

Event Details: 1/4-1/7: Free Admission to Aquarium of the Bay - :

Sea NettlesAll during the first full week of January, San Francisco residents get free admission to the Aquarium of the Bay located next to PIER 39 at The Embarcadero and Beach Street. Yes, it means you’ll have to venture dangerously close into Fisherman’s Wharf territory, but I promise it’s worth it to spend an afternoon virtually underwater experiencing the Bay’s marine life up close. And then you can skip on over to the Crab House at Pier 39 to gobble up everything you got to see at the aquarium. I know I’ll be there with my face pressed up against the tanks, rapping my knuckles against the glass yelling, “Here, here, little fishy!” (Just kidding… Please be kind to the sea creatures.)

From the Aquarium of the Bay press release:

“Celebrating its recent transition to nonprofit status, Aquarium of the Bay is kicking off the New Year by hosting free days for San Francisco residents, January 4-7, 2010. San Francisco residents who show valid identification will be granted access to the Aquarium and introduced to its more than 60,000 local inhabitants.

Aquarium of the Bay became a nonprofit organization in June of 2009, when it was acquired by The Bay Institute. The two organizations share a similar mission, driven by conservation of the San Francisco Bay and its watershed, making the partnership a perfect fit.

San Francisco residents are encouraged to learn about the Aquarium and The Bay Institute’s various conservation, research and education projects, and ways that they can get involved. Sevengill shark tagging and research in the San Francisco Bay, free education programs inside the Aquarium and North Bay watershed, sustainable seafood initiatives, and efforts to protect endangered species are among the projects that the two organizations are supporting and spearheading.

To receive free admission, San Francisco residents must provide one of the following:

  • Valid driver’s license or ID card, with San Francisco address
  • Utility bill or bank statement that includes your name and home address (not a P.O. Box), along with identification card.”
