Congratulations to John Pérez, the new speaker of the California Assembly!

Assembly Speaker John Pérez
The man is not only California’s most politically powerful homo (take THAT, Tom Ammiano!), the Angeleno is also apparently single. Owen Thomas, on NBC’s Bay Area blog, thinks that the coverage from Jim Sanders in the Sacramento Bee reads more like a personal ad than a profile of an up-and-coming politician.
As he quotes the Bee:
- His nickname is “Big Papi.”
- Perez is “extremely knowledgeable .. about Jewish culture although he is not a Jew.”
- “Burly.”
If you’re the mensch for this papi, send him an email. Preferably in “Spiddish”, my feyguelitos.

There actually is a language that mixes Spanish and Hebrew (like Yiddish mixes German and Hebrew) – Ladino. =D
Oh quite certainly yes. As a Sephardic Jew, I’ve researched this a bit. But a Spanish/Yiddish hybrid is a thoroughly newer creation. Possibly unique to Perez and his friends.
Sorry, I didn’t realise that was a line from the article… my bad =)
So why that “take THAT, Tom Ammiano”? (Yeah, I know who he is.) Can there be only one? Is the whole idea to make sure that whatever gay people we get into politics are pitted against each other, instead of against the forces of evil?
Duncan,
My point is that, despite devoting decades to politics, Tom Ammiano has not achieved the *personal* success of this relative neophyte. Politically, Ammiano and Perez are similar on many issues, and I expect that they will work together to achieve them. I didn’t mean to give the impression that they are (or should be) “pitted against each other.”
Of course, I do not argue that Perez has achieved more than Ammiano for gay rights–but he now certainly has a better chance to than Ammiano has.
Thanks for the clarification, Raphael. I still don’t think that “Take that, Tom Ammiano!” is the best way to express those quite sensible ideas.
