Event Details: LA Weekend Preview: 12/3-12/6 - :

‘Tis officially the season, and holiday-themed events are starting to sprout up.

Thursday

Seattle-based Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band at Spaceland in Silverlake (1717 Silverlake Blvd).

If you’re looking for trashy queer events, head to the Eagle in Silverlake (4219 Santa Monica Blvd) for the Wet Underwear Contest, or Fubar in West Hollywood (7994 Santa Monica Blvd.). Also, Club Nur happens at Eleven in West Hollywood (8811 Santa Monica Blvd), for gay Middle Eastern, Persian, and Armenian boys (and their admirers).

Friday

Butchlalis

Queer Economy, by Butchlalis de Panochtitlan + La MariColectiva

An exchange of politically and sexually transgressive experiences of queer / joto / undocumented / indigena / chunti / immigrant communities overflowing on stage. Butchlalis de Panochtitlan teams up with La MariColectiva to distribute new literary works. Fri + Sat 8:30pm $20/$15 Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica (1651 18th St.)

Stag Fridays at The Rockwell in Los Feliz (1714 N. Vermont Ave). A new restaurant/bar with a swank open-air dining area looks promising, and now they have a gay night with Stag Fridays. Missed it last week. I think they are going for a swank, outdoorsy kitsch theme here, but perhaps with more of a WeHo flavor than Silverlake (the event is promoted by Tom Whitman Presents, who’s behind some of the bigger West Hollywood gay events, like Cherry Pop and Size). Still, the curiosity is piqued.

Fink at Spaceland (1717 Silverlake Blvd)

Cold Cave at Eagle Rock Center for the Arts (2225 Colorado Blvd.) with Former Ghosts and the awesome local boys Abe Vigoda. (Not this Abe Vigoda)

Saturday

uniquela

Unique Los Angeles crafts fair offers a great way to start your holiday shopping. Over 300 local designers and artists sell their arts, fashions, and crafts. Famous and probably-will-be-famous-soon LA-based designers will be represented. This year they will have a green room featuring ecologically-oriented desigins. I got a wonderful squid jacket at their summer show! Tickets cost $10 and benefit the youth writing programs at 826LA. Also some free workshops on making bags and wallets, monsters, and bookbinding. At the California Market Center in Downtown LA (110 East 9th Street).

PROJECT: Holiday Projection at the Spurgeon Building in Santa Ana (206 West 5th Street). A free event from 7-9 in downtown Santa Ana, described as “a visual journal through imagination, distorted perception, and holiday ambiance.” Translation: Some free art in the hipsteriest part of OC. Animated light sculptures and projections on the exterior of the historic Spurgeon Building, accompanied by music from Chris Alfaro and The Definiens Project. Performances continue every Thursday through Sunday evenings now until December 27.

Retro Holiday Slide Show with LA historian extraordinaire Charles Phoenix. The King of Retro returns to spread holiday cheer with a slyly entertaining live comedy performance that celebrates mid-century holiday life and style. With his unstoppable enthusiasm and wry, eagle eye for the very best and most bizarre of his massive collection of found-Kodachrome slides, Phoenix supercharges the classic living room slide show into a hysterical/historical celebration of American holiday life and style. It’s a 1950s & 60s New Years, Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas jubilee that’s sure to get you in the mood for the all the holidays like you never have before! IN COLOR! Tickets are $25 at the Neighborhood Church in Pasadena (301 N. Orange Grove Blvd).

Girls at the Troubador. You may have seen their wang-filled music video circulating on the web the past few weeks. If not, you can check it out at Rudy Bleu’s blog. Contains wang, so probably NSFW.

Queer Economy. See Friday.

Sunday

Fiesta Hanukkah at the Skirball Center (2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd). The Skirball highlights Jewish communities of Latin America with Hanukkah festivities. Klezmer mariachi bands, folks! Crafts and games as well. While you’re there, you may want to check out their exhibit on photos from the civil rights movement.

The Sawdust Arts Festival has been going on in Laguna Beach since November 21 and ends December 13. In its 19th year, this “Winter Fantasy” festival features offers over 60 arts-and-crafts classes, like mural painting, animal finger puppets, watercolor cards, photo composition, and lots of orrnament-making classes.  Lots of exhibitors will have gifts for sale.

Unique LA Crafts fair. See Saturday. Workshops on hand-stiched robot ornaments, monster-making, and DIY planners.
