Events for the week of 11/26-12/3:
Thursday, Nov 26
- HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Eat your T(of)urkey and give thanks that you had a chance to live in LA before it gets destroyed in the inevitable apocalypse (see pic).
- Get your good on by helping feed LA’s hungry by signing up to volunteer at Gobble Gobble Give! Continuing a 10-year tradition, Barry Walker and his nonprofit have prepared dinners for homeless people of Echo Park on Thanksgiving. Check out the website to learn how to get involved.
- Worried about the toll Thanksgiving has on your waistline? Perhaps you should consider a Turkey Trot (or a Gobble Wobble, or whatever cute name they think of to describe a 5K) as a way to burn off extra calories and help a slew of local charities? There’s one going on in Long Beach, Santa Monica, Anaheim, Malibu, and probably a bunch of other locations.
Friday, Nov 27
- Black Friday? Who’s got money for shopping, anyhow? Why not check out a Museum?
- Laguna Art Museum: Weathering The Storm through Jan 17 featuring works by SF-based Jeremy Fish. His paintings and sculptures combine cute and cartoonish woodland critters with surreal scenes from San Francisco’s early days and recent history. Check out Fish’s website to get a flavor for his work. Looks pretty awesome.
- The California Heritage Museum: SKATEBOARD: Evolution and Art in California. Through May 30. What embodies southern California urban culture better than the skateboard? The California Heritage Museum recognizes the impact SoCal has had on the nation with an exhibit on the evolution of the skateboard from the early 20th Century to the present. On display are the riders, designers, artists, and manufacturers that created California’s first skateboards.
- The Autry National Center has some compelling exhibits now. Charting the Canyon is an exhibit of mural-scale photography by Mark Klett and Byron Wolfe. The artists combine recent and historic images of the Grand Canyon to create large-scale panoramic collages that convey so effectively the limits of photography to capture nature’s most dramatic landscapes. Dreamers in Dream City is a must for any Angelino. Harry Brant Chandler (scion of two of the great families that shaped LA) profiles the exceptional characters of LA who personify its status as a “dream city”. It’s quite a juxtaposition to see Angelyne next to Amelia Earhart and William Mulholland. This exhibit gives some great context to the role of LA in embodying America’s aspirations.
- Japanese American National Museum is showing the Giant Robot Biennial. This show highlights over 50 artists who have been featured in the magazine and embody its aesthetic sensibilities. See artwork from the brains behind Kaiju and UglyDolls!
Saturday, Nov 28
- Peaches at The Wiltern (3790 Wilshire Boulevard). ‘Nuff said.
- Or maybe you should check out The Dum Dum Girls at Spaceland (1717 Silverlake Boulevard) for lo-fi, garage-joy.
Sunday, Nov 29
- Orange County’s Patchwork arts and crafts festival makes a special appearance in Long Beach! I checked them out a few weeks ago in Santa Ana and found enough hipster bird art to wallpaper my room. Which I subsequently did. Check ‘em out from 11-5 at Marine Stadium (5225 E. Paoli Way).
- Here’s a truly LA experience: Ice skating. On the beach. In the mid-seventies. In your speedos. Lindsay William-Ross at LAist put together a great map of LA’s outdoor skating rinks. (Note: technically, swimsuit skating was last week, and is only held at Seaside Ice in Redondo Beach. But this weekend they offer something nearly as good: Skate with Santa!)
