I have a real love/hate relationship with Autumn. The first half of it is bar-none my favorite time of year – the sweltering heat and humidity of another Virginia summer is over, there’s a fresh crispness to the air, the Oktoberfest special brews are out at the patio bars, and what was once simply green explodes into an orgy of red, orange, and yellow. The second half is another story entirely – I can’t seem to make it out of the office before nightfall, the pre-winter dreariness sets in, the mad holiday rush is about to begin, the cookouts and patio bar-ing is over, and that “fresh crispness” turns straight up cold. When I look at this photo, I see my favorite part of the year succumbing to the inevitable, and the framing of the subject with the other-colored leaves is a really nice thought.
