Event Details: 11/18 - Pink Sock @ The Wonderland Ballroom - :

pink_sockThe Wonderland Ballroom is launching a new monthly eccentric/alternative gay dance party called Pink Sock. You know when you accidentally throw in a red t-shirt into your white laundry and all your socks end up pink? That’s what Pink Sock’s all about. A blending of fun people, of the community, and turning it all pink. Starting this Wednesday, Pink Sock marks a return to the bar’s roots, as it once served as an African-American gay bar in the early 70s.

This time around, Boston-native DJ RAD will be spinning music from the most innovative and avante garde performance artists from the 70s-disco era, 80s-new wave, 90-house & hip-hop, to the freshest electro music of today.

Pink Sock is a Columbia Heights party for gays and for the straights who are cool enough to have gay friends (or want to meet some).

I do love the name, “little pink sock” makes me think of mutts comics:

(But the tagline is a bit much…”cool enough to have gay friends?”)

Actually the Wonderland was an African-American gay social spot for half a century, not just in the 70s. It opened as a private African-American social club in 1953 and went public in 1957. For many years it was the place for gay Howard students to meet, especially after the fires of 1968 destroyed many of the gay and gay-friendly spots along 14th St, U Street, and Georgia.

I thought everyone knew that within the gay & lesbian community, the term “pink sock” has a lot more to do with fisting than laundry accidents.
