Ask A Straight Guy: The Twilight Sad’s James Graham

“I Became a Prostitute,” “Cold Days from The Birdhouse,” and “Walking for Two Hours” are not, in fact, chapter headings from your grandfathers’ depressing how-I-got-to-America memoirs. Instead, they are song titles written by The Twilight Sad, a Scottish band who does not even for a minute temper its epic, majestic songwriting with things like levity, sunshine or a sonic depth of less than 12 feet. You need waterwings and a kickboard to get through the pools of their writing, but those that like the band well enough to attend their show tonight at the Black Cat (or its accompanying tour) know that the exploration has its own rewards. Rewards like cathartic wailing, mild, passable depression and a newfound appreciation for Englands’ bawdy neighbors to the North.

The Twilight Sad’s lead singer James Graham was nice enough to answer some of our questions about being straight. You can check out the interview, and a TTS video, below.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

James Graham: Like a lot of young fanboys, it was at Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.  Princess Leia! That bikini!

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

JG: They all have badly groomed pubic hair.

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

JG: I don’t know, treat them mean keep them keen.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

JG: Italian disco

TNG:  If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

JG: Lady Gaga! Is she or isn’t he?

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

JG: Well, we don’t have indie haircuts; we look more like war criminals. And we love cock rock!

TNG: Finally, why should Washington, DC come out and see you play tonight?

JG: To see what’s hidden under a Scotsman’s kilt.
