Ask A Straight Guy: The Dodos’ Logan Kroeber

the dodos

San Francisco-based psych/folk band The Dodos is currently touring The States to bring their trippy, melodic campfire-on-mild-LSD sound to the devoted masses. A band notable for taking the electronic elements out of today’s favored pschydelic/expiremental sound and making it organic, the former duo actually added a vibraphone player to their lineup just for us.

To get you pumped for their show tonight at the Rock and Roll Hotel, the band’s drummer Logan Kroeber was nice enough to answer some of our questions about being straight. You can check out those, and a Dodos video sampler, below.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Logan Kroeber: In highschool after I broke up with my third boyfriend I realized I was fooling myself just going with the norm of homosexuality. I decided then and there to go against the grain and face the shame of dating chicks.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

LK: That the sexual acts I perform are not also condemned in the Bible. I can sin too even if I’m not gay!

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

LK: Just to fight ignorance and misconceptions if I encounter it them out in the world.

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

LK: Just the level of male posturing I must keep up on a daily basis to let those around me know that I am not, in fact, a giant homo.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

One of those tragically in the closet preachers or politicians who hate themselves because they’re gay and take it out on their communities instead. Then maybe they could stop hassling everybody and have a good time for once. Just no Dick Cheney types please, for the love of god.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

LK: We just do what we do and what interests us. Some people hate it and think it’s derivative, others think it sounds new and good. There’s no predicting it.

TNG: Finally, why should Washington, DC come out and see you play tonight?

ILK: If they wanna have fun and see three dudes working hard for it they sould come. We respond in kind to stimulus from the crowd so please get rowdy.
