Friday Staff Survey: She Rocks

This post was submitted by Rocky

she_rexAs many of you know by now, no doubt, tonight is the debut of She.Rex, TNG’s new queer rock n’ roll bar night and dance party at Chaos and Pandemonium. Since tonight’s event is all about rock and features some of the hottest lady bartenders and DJ’s in DC, I (with a tip of the hat to Michael) thought it would fitting to ask the staff this week:

Who is your favorite lady of rock n’ roll and why?

Free to leave your favorite in comments!

Zack, Editor-in-Chief:

Right now for me its Beth Ditto. It’s incredible that a woman of her young age could sing like Robert Plant, have stage presence greater than all the Rockettes combined, and be so unabashedly open about her sexuality.

She also stage dives with the best of them and looks good in a nighty.

Michael, Co-founder and primary contributor:

I’d have to say Peaches. I have so much respect for someone who can be so outwardly sexual and totally own it, all the while making really good music. She programs her own beats, plays her own guitar, and surely rips her own fishnet stockings. She’s undeniable.

Amelie, Staff Contributor:

Stevie Nicks. She’s rocked “gypsy/witch” as a style for 30+ years and felt that a top hat would be the perfect accessory for her outfit at Bill Clinton’s inauguration. Amazing.

Ben K., Staff Contributor:

I’ve got to go with Beth Ditto too. I can’t stop listening to Music for Men and am feeling all about her right now as I am seeing Gossip perform this weekend in Chicago. Can’t wait!

Rohan, Staff Contributor:

Kim Gordon. I mean she just exudes cool, and she sings one of my all time favorite Sonic Youth songs, “Shadow Of A Doubt”. She can be sexy, she can be dangerous, she can be anything. She even has songs written about her (Rapeman’s “Kim Gordon’s Panties”). Just watch, no other bitches can hold a candle to her. And did you know, as Gossip Girl this week taught me, she is a minister because of a “sketchy internet service.” I’d have Kim marry me anytime.

Jack, Staff Contributor:

Sadie Benning easily for having an incredible film oeuvre in addition to the amazingness of Le Tigre

Levi, Staff Contributor:

Exene Cervenka from X. She was one of the first female punk rockers. I’ve loved her since about 8th grade. She and John Doe wrote pure West Coast punk poetry while singing like they were either fighting or fucking. And she acts, writes, does spoken word, has an awesome solo career… Plus, she’s still rocking it today after over 30 years even though she’s got MS. Not to mention she was once married to Viggo Mortensen… HOT.

Adam, Chicago Editor:

Nina Persson of The Cardigans. I tried all day to think of a more melodic, soothing yet haunting voice but could not come up with a better woman. The fact that I met her and she’s the sweetest ever also helps!

Jolly, Events Editor:

Pat Benetar, because without “Love is a Battlefield” I would have nothing to sing at karaoke. Also, she helped get me an A in college when I used her song as a soundtrack to a scene from a remake of A Midsummer Night’s Dream film set in 1980s New York that I made up and presented in a Shakespeare class. Good times.

Bryan, San Francisco Editor:

Kim Deal. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed with Mountain Battles last year, but I did get to see The Breeders while they were touring for the album. Still sounds fresh, still sounds ten times better than a lot of other alt-shit hitting the airwaves today. I’ve always appreciated that Deal’s persona was devoid of any pretentiousness or trying to be cool. Always seems to be in on the joke if not the one pulling the prank to begin with. Could easily bake you a cake or punch you in the face. I wanna feel Kim Deal.

Josh, Houston Editor:

Wow this is tough. Either Siouxie Sioux or Grace Jones. Both of them rock… Check out this vid of Grace (lol).

I’ll go with Siouxie because she’s dark, glam, and she wails.

*Once again, here are the details for tonight’s party:

Totally agree with Amelie~Stevie Nicks…rock and roll Goddess, gypsy, witchy woman. I even have a shoppe where you can buy all of her style clothing, jewelry and accessories, the Enchanted Mirror~She is SUCH an inspiration to so many.

As to the comment that people should buy from Enchanted Mirror – huh – I ordered and paid for a dress on 2-20-09. It’s 9 months later now and I haven’t received either the dress, nor a refund. The BBB is giving them an ‘F’, because they have not responded to any of their customer’s complaints.
    It’s a scam!
